History
Régiment d'Infanterie de Marine or RIMa, are a unit from the Troupes de marine, the French marines. The Troupes de marine, formerly Troupes coloniales, are an arm of the French Army with a colonial heritage. The Troupes de marine have a dedicated overseas service role. Despite their title they have been a part of the Army since 1958. They are sometimes referred to as French marines in English-speaking media, though they are not connected to the current French naval infantry, the Fusiliers Marins and Commandos Marine.
The primary Troupes de marine formation is 9e Division d'Infanterie de Marine. This division was the heirs to the Blue Division of Franco-Prussian War and 9e Division d'Infanterie Coloniale of World War II. This division was light infantry at this time assigned to terrestrial intervention force which will be expanded to Force d’Action Rapide. These mounted in VAB. 11th Division Parachutiste had four Parachutiste d'Infanterie de Marine regiments. The overseas forces were either Legion formations or Marine Formations.
Manurhin of France licensed production of SG-543 which were adopted before use of FAMAS.
