The AMX-10 RC, is an armoured tank hunter and reconnaissance vehicle which is still in use amongst the French Forces. Amphibious, it is used for reconnaissance in dangerous environment and fire support. An aggressive and pricey reconnaissance unit, the AMX-10 RC is more specialized than the similar Sagaie. While it can be used for the same roles, its higher price makes it harder to put it at risk.
Available to NATO forces, the AMX-10 RC is available after unlocking the ERC-90 Sagaie.
The AMX-10 RC's main characteristics are:
- High speed. While inferior to the Sagaie and other, lighter land reconnaissance vehicles, it is still one of the fastest of its category.
- Excellent Operational range with low fuel consumption.
- The best canon available to reconnaissance vehicles, with great accuracy and good damage output.
- MMG in addition to the canon, giving it slight AA abilities.
- Side armor.
- Very good optics.
- Rather high price
- A bigger silhouette than the Sagaie
History
Development of this tank began in 1970, with prototypes being tested 6 years later. The first one would be produced in 1981 with the first of them being delivered to the 2nd Regiment de Hussards. The vehicle supported a GIAT 105mm gun and mounted a welded turret made of aluminum.
AMX-10 RC served in the two reconnaissance regiments of the 6e Division Blindee Legere while the other two Division Blindee Legere has one Cavalry regiment equipped with AMX-10 RC and other armored cars. The Division d'Infanterie has a reconnaissance regiment.
Apart from France, the tank is also used by Cameroon, Morocco and Qatar.
Tactics
Taking these features into account, the AMX-10 RC has two main roles:
- Aggressive reconnaissance. Its very good sights and high speed make it great at advancing early on in advantageous positions, preparing ambushes or simply early artillery correction.
- Tank hunter. Its main canon's accuracy and damage make the AMX-10 RC an excellent tank hunter, able to see by himself targets entering its range where standard tank hunters are limited by their poor optics.
It can also be used to as a sniper and counter-reconnaissance, but its standard size make it hard to stay undetected.
