The Egg Wrecker,[1] also known as the Egg Mobile-H,[note 1][2][3] is a vehicle that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a modified version of the Egg Mobile that includes a wrecking ball. It is the boss of Green Hill Zone in the original Sonic the Hedgehog, and as a result is the very first boss fought in the franchise. The Egg Wrecker has been referenced several times, like in Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I.
Description
The Egg Wrecker is the ordinary Egg Mobile, featuring a chain that connects it to a large, checkered brown wrecking ball. It is capable of flight, but is much slower than the normal Egg Mobile. In Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I, the Egg Wrecker could rotate 360 degrees to slam the wrecking ball.
Game appearances
Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)
In the original Sonic the Hedgehog, the Egg Wrecker is fought at the end of Green Hill Zone Act 3. The battle takes place on a flat piece of grass with two floating platforms above it. Doctor Eggman will fly into the arena and deploy the wrecking ball from the Egg Mobile. He then slowly moves back and forth across the screen in a linear pattern, swinging the wrecking ball from side to side. The player receives damage if they touch the wrecking ball. To defeat the Egg Wrecker, the player must hit it with a Spin Attack by jumping from either platform; eight hits are needed to destroy the boss.
It is possible to hit the Egg Wrecker before it releases the wrecking ball, allowing for the fight to be shortened significantly. In Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis, it is possible to bounce on Eggman's head, hitting the Egg Wrecker many times in a row, making this boss fight much easier. In the 2013 remaster of Sonic the Hedgehog, the battle arena has been extended to fit the new widescreen aspect ratio while the movement pattern of the Egg Wrecker has been increased in size to match. In this version, the Egg Wrecker can no longer be damaged until the wrecking ball is completely deployed.
Sonic & Knuckles
The Egg Wrecker later makes an appearance as the first boss of Sonic's version of Sky Sanctuary Zone in Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It is the eleventh boss overall of that story in Sonic & Knuckles. Knuckles cannot fight this boss without using cheat codes. In this game, the Egg Wrecker is piloted by Mecha Sonic Mark II instead of Eggman. The player can more easily hit the boss in this game with attacks like the Insta-Shield, Propeller Flying, and the Double Jump, making the battle much easier. The boss fight is identical to that in Sonic 1 with a slightly different attack pattern: when Mecha Sonic Mk. II arrives at the other side of the arena, he stops the Egg Mobile and lets the wrecking ball swing to a very high height until it falls down in a similar way. The Egg Wrecker, as well as the Egg Bouncer that appears later in Sky Sanctuary Zone, can be fought several times if the player re-enters the boss arena from an earlier point in the level after playing a Bonus Stage.
Sonic Advance
In Sonic Advance, the Egg Wrecker is the first boss fought in X-Zone. It is identical to its earlier appearances, except it only takes four hits to defeat. The player proceeds to fight the Egg Drillster afterwards. Unlike most other bosses in the game, the number of hits needed to destroy the Egg Wrecker does not change with the difficulty.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I
In Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I, the Egg Wrecker is fought in Splash Hill Zone Act 4. The boss fight is divided into two phases: the first phase is identical to its previous appearances. Upon taking five hits, Eggman will utilize a new attack; he will retract the ball and flip 360 degrees, slamming it down where Sonic is. However, this also leaves him vulnerable as he retracts the wrecking ball in preparation of using this attack again. The most consistent way to avoid this attack is to stand on a platform close to a boundary and jumping at the moment Eggman flips. Another three hits destroy the Egg Wrecker.
The Egg Wrecker later appears in E.G.G. Station Zone, as part of the boss rush before the final boss. Here, the platforms move up and down once the player jumps on them. The second phase begins after the boss receives two hits and ends after three other hits.
Sonic Forces
A boss fight against Eggman reminiscent of the Egg Wrecker re-appears in Sonic Forces, after clearing Green Hill. In this game, the wrecking ball is replaced by a spinning saw blade. The player must hit it five times to defeat it. After it is defeated, Eggman will summon the Egg Dragoon.
