Belle the Tinkerer

I was scared about what to do with myself after I lost my father. But after being with you all, surviving so many encounters, seeing all the good you do... the world doesn't seem nearly as big or scary anymore! So I think I'll do some traveling. Help folks I meet along the way. Take some time for myself, away from all these big, cataclysmic scenarios.

— Belle the Tinkerer, Sonic the Hedgehog #76

Concept and creation

Belle was conceptualized and designed by Evan Stanley, who pitched her along with her rough character arc and design.[1][10] The crew at IDW Publishing wanted to introduce a character with a recognizable design and concept that would let them stand out and yet fit into Sonic's world and cast. Eventually it was decided that Belle would be a robot (a common concept) designed like a marionette doll (a new concept).[1][10]

Belle's design is somewhat inspired by the huldra, a creature in Scandinavian mythology, in particular her tail.[11][12] For her pitch, she possessed an apron with tools in her pocket, dark cheeks, no jawlines, and barren shoulders.[10] Stanley also initially proposed a version of Belle that was a clear animal species, namely a mouse, as Stanley "wasn't sure how her non-specific puppety-ness would fly."[10][11] In the end though, it was decided that she would not be based on any particular animal. This was because Stanley realized while designing her that she did not need to be any specific species, which also added to her general strangeness and gave it more originality.[11] Late in her design phase, it was requested by Sega that Stanley added jawlines under Belle's mouth in order to make it clear that she was a robot and to make her look more puppet-like.[1][10]

Appearance

Belle is a robot with a metal skeleton and a casing made entirely out of oak hardwood,[13] giving her a marionette doll-like appearance. Modeled like an anthropomorphic animal, she has orange fur and a tan muzzle, along with medium-long braids that are held together with green hair ties at the ends and a large fuzzy hair tuff on her forehead. She also has blue eyes, three freckles on each cheek, buck teeth, and a large pink round clown-like nose. Her four eyelashes have thick ends, while her arms and legs on the other hand are tan and rectangular in shape. Lastly, she has an orange thread with a tuft at the end for a tail. For attire, she wears a pink shirt with puffy shoulders and a white collar, a pointy green cap, green overalls with yellow buttons and short puffy legs, white socks with frills, and pink Mary Jane shoes with yellow buttons. Though her hands also appear to wear gloves, they are actually just white attached with fake white frilly-designed cuffs.

History

Past

TinkerBelle

Made by "Mr. Tinker" with Badnik parts,[9][14] Belle was created to be his little helper and aid with work in places like machine shops.[3][15] Referring to Mr. Tinker as her "dad",[14] Belle loved her creator very much.[16]

Belle would happily spend her time fixing the toys and rides Mr. Tinker created for Windmill Village's children. When he then began introducing Belle to the villagers, they were nervous about her but willing to give Belle a chance. One day, however, Belle discovered that Mr. Tinker had vanished. Not long after, Mr. Tinker (now having regained his Eggman persona) attacked Windmill Village in the Faceship by dumping the Metal Virus into it. With the Metal Virus unable to affect her, Belle hid from the villagers-turned-Zombots. After the Zombots had then left, Belle remained in the abandoned Windmill Village, feeling very lonely. When the Zombot apocalypse was later averted and the cured villagers returned to the village however, Belle found the villagers blaming her and accusing her of being an Eggman spy.[16] People told her that Mr. Tinker had been a monster all along as Dr. Eggman, but Belle could not believe it.[3] It was later with a heavy heart that Belle saw the villagers break down and recycle everything Mr. Tinker had built, and when she tried to fix things, the villagers only got angry at her.[16] Eventually, Belle ran away to look for Eggman.[14][16] She hoped that that if she could talk to him, perhaps she could convince him to come back as Mr. Tinker.[16]

As a part of her plan, Belle decided to find Eggman to confirm that what other people said was a lie, and if they were not, she at least hoped to convince her creator to abandon his evil ways.[3] During her search, she came across an abandoned Eggman base near Windmill Village.[13][14]

Chao Races and Badnik Bases

SonicVsBelle

When Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower entered the abandoned Eggman base, Belle would sneak through the shadows of the base, avoiding the boys' attention, and later hide in a pile of scrapped robots.[14] Eventually though, Belle fell out of her hideout when Sonic accidentally kicked a screw into it. Sonic immediately mistook her for a Badnik and attacked while trying to guess her name. However, Belle kept avoiding Sonic's attacks until he pulled her tail. This caused her to kick Sonic with both legs by reflex, which she apologized for. Eventually though, Tails stopped Sonic and explained to Belle that they usually meet robots that belong to Eggman's army. Belle explained that she was not created by Eggman, but by another creator she had been trying to find for a while. Tails was likewise impressed that she was made entirely of wood. However, they were interrupted by an alarm in the base that was triggered after Tails forgot to turn off the local computer's firewall. Beats then arrived and surrounded the heroes. While Sonic and Tails were discussing how to get out of their current situation, Belle noticed that an Egg Keeper was trying to catch Tails. She thus pushed Tails away, leaving her to get immobilized by the Badnik herself. Fortunately, Tails destroyed the Egg Keeper and freed Belle. Sonic then told Belle that they would have to take advantage of her unusual abilities as the situation around them got worse.[13]

After Tails made an escape route for them, Belle rescued Tails when he was caught by an Egg Keeper by making a leap that pulled Tails out of the Egg Keeper's grasp after pulling her tail. Sonic then dragged both of them outside the base. Afterward, Belle asked them to take her with them to White Park Zone as her current hideout had been taken over by Badniks. After Tails convinced Sonic to let her come along, the latter had Belle chosen a wing on the Tornado to ride on all the way to White Park Zone but did not enjoy the ride. After being sat off at the White Park Grand Chateau, Belle was still shaky from the flight. Amy then led Belle and Sonic to the suite of Clutch the Opossum, who was lying unconscious on the floor. At the same time, Cream wanted to release the Chao Clutch had locked in a cage with numerous locks. Upon hearing this, Belle decided to help Cream open the cage since tinkering was her specialty. Cream then introduced herself to Belle. Soon after, Clutch got up and activated the Badniks in his suite, before escaping himself. Belle was then surrounded by hostile Badniks again.[4] While protected by the others, Belle worked on opening the cage that the Chao were imprisoned in, but encountered some tricky padlocks. Eventually, however, she got the padlock open and the Chao helped destroy the Badniks. Tails and Rouge appeared shortly afterward, warning them of an avalanche that is closing in on the chateau. The heroes tried to evacuate the chateau, but Dr. Starline soon appeared and stood in their way. While Starline was being held off, Tails told Belle that Starline was merely an Eggman wannabe. When Starline grabbed Tails and tried to kidnap him however, Tails pulled Belle by the tail, making her kick Starline right in his beak and allowing the heroes to escape the incoming avalanche as it hit the chateau and buried Starline. Sonic later apologized to Belle for how he initially treated her when he found out about how she had helped his friends out. Tails, in turn, asked her to help him in his workshop, something which Belle enthusiastically accepted. Later in said workshop, Belle helped Tails fix Omega. Afterward, Tails noticed that she could read Eggman's ciphers without any problems, something which only the doctor himself, or one of his creations, would be capable of. Belle, however, still insisted that Eggman did not create her and refused to give Tails a straight answer.[5]

Weapons

Belle would help Tails repair Omega again, along with Gemerl, after the two robots had an intense sparing.[17]

Test Run!

IDW37Tangle

Belle was later led to the Restoration's new HQ by Sonic and Tails in hopes of instating Belle into the organization and give her a new home. There, they were welcomed by Amy and Jewel. After Belle said that she was good at carpentry work, Jewel sent her to the machine shop. There, Belle tried to help the Chief Mechanic there, but her clumsiness only got her into trouble. When a forklift later ran over her tail, Belle automatically kicked the crate she was carrying into a boat hanging from a frame and broke its restraints. This caused a panic in the shop, but Tangle quickly came and stooped the boat's fall. Belle, however, lost her job in the workshop because of her screw-up. As Tangle took Belle with her, Belle confessed to Tangle that she had a difficult time in the Restoration. Tangle, on the other hand, quickly became excited over the function Belle's tail had, which she could relate to. Moments later, they both heard rumors that a new Eggman tower, which was causing unnatural storms, had appeared outside the coast. Tangle and Belle thus went to Jewel, where they met Sonic, Tails and Amy. While the others talked, Belle wondered if Eggman might be in the tower. However, she refused to say anything because she would then have to explain herself. Regardless, she gave Tangle the idea of the two of them getting to the tower and helping Sonic investigate it themselves. Belle subsequently took Tangle to an unused Big Bang Extreme Gear that she had hotwired. Immediately after, Belle and Tangle rode it out of the HQ.[15] Arriving at Eggman's tower, Belle and Tangle crashed the Big Bang upon landing, depriving them of one of their means of escape. Passing the broken Badniks in front the entrance, Belle followed Tangle into the tower while taking notice of the Eggman Empire decal on the wall. The duo soon after ended up in a room full of Badniks. Not yet detected by the robots, Belle and Tangle climbed the interior of the tower while avoiding detection until they came upon Orbot and Cubot discussing Sonic, Tails and Amy, who had broken into the tower and ended up inside the test chambers for Eggman's robots. After watching the robotic duo relay these news to Eggman, who decided to make use of this opportunity, Belle asked Tangle if that was Eggman's voice she heard. After Tangle confirmed that and began heading out to help Sonic, Belle accidentally slipped and fell down right in front of some Egg Pawns. However, the Egg Pawns did not detect Belle. Belle was then pulled back up by Tangle, who demanded an explanation. Belle thus told her that she was a Badnik herself and that she came to the tower to seek answers about her origin from Eggman. She assured her that she did not want to hurt anyone, but understood if Tangle did not trust her. To her surprise however, Tangle chose to trust her anyhow, and the two resumed their search for Sonic and co.[9]

Belle and Tangle soon after found and restrained Orbot and Cubot. They then tried to get the robot duo to tell them which one of the portals in the facility would take them to Sonic, Tails and Amy. Meanwhile, Belle redirected the Egg Pawn patrols so that they could not intervene with their interrogation. When Tangle later got the information, she needed from Orbot and Cubot, she tried to head into a portal to rescue Sonic and co., but Belle stopped her, as she feared for her safety. However, she was persuaded by Tangle to let her do it and allowed the lemur passage into the portal.[18] While waiting for Tangle, Belle would snap at Orbot when he tried asking her a question and insisted that she was not a conventional Badnik. She then hesitantly asked him and Cubot about their relation to Eggman. As they explained their duties as his aide robots, Belle fondly remembered Mr. Tinker's habits until she received a sudden call from Eggman on Orbot and Cubot's tablet. Upon seeing Belle, Eggman would recall how he made Belle, who became terrified upon facing her creator. Before Eggman could hang up however, a desperate Belle asked him for as reasonable cause for his cruel actions and the tower she was in. Upon hearing that Eggman only made it to commit evil though, a heartbroken Belle dropped her call. However, Belle then noticed that the portal into the test chamber was spewing energy, which Orbot revealed was a sign that the tower was about to implode. When Tangle later returned with Sonic's gang, Belle warned everybody of the danger. After Sonic took everyone out of the tower, the group fled in the Tornado before the tower imploded. After then parting ways Orbot and Cubot, Belle admitted her past to her friends and how her hopes of getting Eggman to return to his old ways as "Mr. Tinker" had been shattered. Regardless, she was cheered up a little by Tangle when she told him that she had done a lot of good today that would have made Mr. Tinker proud.[3]

Zeti Hunt!

While Belle was in Restoration HQ's machine shop, the HQ came under attack by the Deadly Six. While Belle and the Chief Mechanic were hiding from Zomom however, they were eventually saved by Dr. Starline, who hypnotized Zomom into leaving them. Although her supervisor was thankful for the rescue, Belle explained who Starline actually was. As her supervisor then tried to defend Belle from Starline, he was struck down by Starline with his Multi-Tool Heel Spurs. In order to make Starline let her supervisor live, Belle came with Starline, who, despite some difficulties, managed to abduct her from Restoration HQ.[19]

BelleBlamesStarline

Belle later woke up in Starline's temporary hideout, having been retrained and hooked up to Starline's computer. There, after a short conversation with Starline, who told her that she was an extremely unique commodity and that he had no intention of disassembling her in spite of what she thought of him as he still had respect for Dr. Eggman's work despite their falling out, Belle retorted that she was not Eggman's creation. However, Starline replied that this was only half true, and proceeded to tell her of how he restored Eggman's memory. He also added that without his Mr. Tinker persona, Eggman would never build another robot like Belle, so he wants to study her thoroughly. The furious Belle then began blaming Starline for the loss of her "father", but all Starline took interest in was the data he got on Belle's simulated emotions. Belle was then convinced by Starline to tell him her story. However, she soon noticed that all Starline was interested in was the data he got from her. Belle then noticed that a "ghost" was trying to free her, causing her to freak out. However, the "ghost" turned out to be Espio. The Chaotix subsequently burst into Starline's hideout. Having gotten and secured the data he needed from Belle however, Starline smashed his computer and escaped the Chaotix using his Tricore. Vector tried afterward to comfort a heartbroken Belle by reassuring her that she was not alone and that her friends were waiting for her.[16]

Trial by Fire

Soon after, Belle came with Amy, Tangle and Jewel on a camping trip for some rest and relaxation, although Belle would be plagued by thoughts of recent events. Eventually arriving at the Forest Ridge Zone Campground, the group learned from the camp's ranger to careful with fire as the forest was dry this season. As Belle then helped set up camp, Amy would complain about how Tails forgot to pack basic essentials for them, like matches. To compensate for this, Belle reluctantly showed her that she had a build-in lighter. Later that night, Belle and the others had their futures predicted by Amy's fortune cards. However, when Amy hesitated to reveal Belle's future, Belle's clumsiness caused Amy to drop her card in the campfire. As compensation, Amy told Belle her future with a replacement card, but Belle did not believe what she told her. Later at night, Belle went for a walk, only discover a Sonic-shaped shrub and some noises. As she used her lighter to illuminate the surroundings, she got hit by Motobud and knocked out cold with her lighter on.[7]

IDW46Pre2

When Belle came to, she briefly spotted two figures before noticing that her right hand's casing had been burnt off. She also discovered that Motobud had saved her from the current forest fire, which Belle suspected she had started with her lighter. Tangle soon after showed up, and Belle promptly defended Motobud when Tangle spotted it. After getting her hand bandaged by Tangle, Belle then joined up with her and Motobud to find the park ranger's son, Ashe. Eventually, they found him and Red Hot on the other side of a ravine. As Belle and Tangle began sliding uncontrollably towards the ravine however, Motobud got both of them to ride it, and by working together, they crossed the ravine. After Ashe told them who started the forest fire, whom Belle recognized from before, she, Tangle, Ashe, Red Hot and Motobud tried getting out of the burning forest. Unfortunately, they were forced to the edge of a ravine by a falling tree. As Belle and the others dangled from the edge, the cliff crumbled, and they all fell towards the river below.[20]

Landing in the river, the group found a log to hang onto, with Belle clinging to Tangle's tail. As they rode the rough river, Belle managed to keep Ashe calm when he started to cry. During this trip, Belle was amazed by how Tangle thrived in this situation and how she dreamed of living like an adventurer. Eventually landing at the campgrounds, Belle and her group were found by Amy and Jewel. Belle then helped Ashe get to his father before assuring a scared Jewel that Motobud was friendly. Regardless, the fire was still spreading. However, when Jewel came up with an idea to stop the fire, Belle's friends decided to join forces to help realize it. With the others including Belle in this effort, Belle hesitantly joined their group cheer, before getting to work helping the campers alongside Motobud that got caught up in Jewel's plan. After the forest fire was brought under control and celebrations were then made, Belle, who had gained a measure of self-confidence, saw Tangle tell Jewel that she was quitting the Restoration. Regardless, Jewel understood her decision, and permitted it. Later, Belle came to Tails' workshop, where Tails fixed her hand. Afterward, they turned their attention to Motobud, with Tails planning to check it out in hopes of finding out if they could make other lesser Badniks defy their programming like it had.[21]

Belle being brainwashed

Belle, Sonic, and Tails soon after began conducting an experiment on lesser Badniks that they had gathered at Tails' workshop. With the group having isolated Motobud's nonaggression subroutines, Belle would transfer them wirelessly to the other Badniks with the Miles Electric, which made them docile in the presence of Sonic. Their experiment a success, Belle hoped to save other Badniks this way. Afterwards, Belle stayed outside and cuddled with Motobud for a while. Later at night, however, Belle received a beacon signal that compelled her to head to a certain location. When Tails got in her way though, Belle tried to attack him, only for Sonic to step in and keep her at bay. When Belle and Motobud managed to pin down Sonic however, Tails returned with a prototype Zeti Zapper that broke the signal's hold on Belle. Recovering, Belle told her friends that the signal was summoning an army of Badniks, and that she intended to give Eggman a piece of her mind. With Belle unable to tell where they were supposed to be heading however, she, Sonic and Tails resorted to letting Motobud loose and following it to the signal's source. Along the way, they found people surrounded by Badniks, but Sonic managed to get them out of the robots' hairs. Resuming their chase, the trio eventually reached some woods after hours of pursuit, with Eggperial City just ahead of them. Belle then tried to stop Motobud, which caught the attention of the surrounding Badniks. In an attempt to save them and keep Motobud away from Eggman, Belle regretfully chose to cut off Motobud's power in spite the risk of permanently deactivating it while Sonic and Tails held the Badniks off. Though Belle's plan worked and the Badniks resumed their mindless march, he also found a written confession for her from Mr. Tinker inside Motobud. Though Belle knew now that Mr. Tinker was indeed lost forever, Sonic encouraged her to keep moving forward with them. Belle thus chose to come with Sonic and Tails as they headed into Eggperial City to investigate.[22][23]

Battle for the Empire

StH50-Belle-Says-Goodbye

Belle was taken by Sonic into the Eggperial City. Sonic offered her to stay behind, but she wanted to see what was bringing the Badniks to the city. Once they got close to the center of the city, Belle saw a badly damaged Metal Sonic and deiced to fix him up, saying she can't abandon a robot in need. Tails objected to it, but the two heroes were then taken away by Surge and Kit. Belle then looked to see a horde of Badniks began to close in on her. She took Metal into another room to hide from the Badniks and used herself as a router to allow the Zeti Zapper to block the command signal in the city from controlling Metal Sonic too. Metal Sonic went back online, and Belle was worried the robot was going to attack her. Metal then slashed behind her, stopping a Motobug from attacking them. Surprised, Belle checked his files and discovered Metal recognized her as Eggtech. She also found Metal's connection to the Eggnet lets him know where Dr. Eggman is. Belle then decided to go to Eggman with Metal, since Metal going out her range would lose the connection they have. They boarded an elevator and descended into the depths of the city.

Belle and Metal found Dr. Eggman under a city street with him standing over a defeated Dr. Starline. Belle told Eggman she found the letter he left for her when he was Mr. Tinker before Starline "ruined their lives". Eggman replied that Starline putting him "back in the correct frame of mind" was not a mistake. Belle recognized she can't change his mind and she has come to say goodbye, saying the father she knew is gone and she has to move on. Eggman rolled his eyes on how Belle and Metal are so clingy. He then went to the two robots and asked since Belle was "against" him, if she was going to duel Metal Sonic. Belle said all she did fixed him, like how she will help all the robots he abandons. As the street above them started to collapse, Eggman asked how she bypassed the control signal. Belle explained she used herself as a secure router. Eggman realized she interfaced with his coding directly and, since he was impressed by her work, he offered her a choice: join him as a mechanic or go back to Sonic and his "bothersome buddies. Belle once again said this was a goodbye and she is returning to her friends. Eggman laughed it off and left with Metal Sonic. As more debris fell near her, Belle called out to Starline to get out. Starline, however, was overwhelmed with sorrow over his defeat. Belle looked with distraught as Starline was buried under the rubble and she quickly left the area.

Belle then regrouped with Sonic and Tails by hitching a ride on a Fullboar. Sonic asked where Metal was and she explained he returned to Eggman and left her. Belle then explained she modified the Badnik to not attack, but it was weirdly friendly when she did so. Belle was about to explain what happened to Starline, when Eggman announced over the city's PA system that he has retained control over the Badniks and sent the massive swarm to attack them.[24] Sonic raced off with Belle and the group went to hide. Once they were in the clear, Belle explained everything that happened to them today was Starline's fault. She laid out the plan and how it turned out and told Sonic Starline had died. Sonic asked how she knew this and Belle told him she downloaded some dated when she worked on Metal Sonic. Tails asks if she can find a map by connecting to the Eggnet. Belle tries and can't connect, but she does find a record of a hanger near where they are with a shuttle inside. Sonic and Tails discus what they should do and Belle apologies for not being a fighter. Sonic says that isn't necessary and the world needs types like her. She thanks Sonic and picks up Kit to make a run to the shuttle.

As Belle and Tails sneak to the shuttle, some Guards get near her, but to her surprise, they don't notice her. Seeing she's safe around them, Belle calls for Tails to take them out. Tails quickly disposes of the Badniks and they run into the shuttle. Tails is able to get it off the ground and they eventually fly over Sonic. Belle goes to a door and pulls Sonic inside the shuttle after he jumped up to it. Unbeknownst to them, Metal Sonic has been following them and flies through the ship, causing it to crash back onto the city. Belle, Tails, and Kit are unharmed, but Sonic broke his ankle.[25]

Overpowered

Belle protecting Sonic from Metal

Metal Sonic was charging up to attack Sonic, Tails, Belle, and Kit, but Tails was able to grab Kit and push Belle and Sonic out of the way before Metal smashed into the ground. They made it into a cramped area so Metal wouldn't be at full speed. Belle picked up Kit again and pleaded for Metal to stop. Metal did not listen and the group went into a room to hide. Kit was struggling to get out of Belle's grasp, even after explaining she was trying to help. Kit elbowed her in the nose and they fell on the ground. Soon, Kit agreed to help them fight Metal Sonic, but said he needed water to refill his Hydro Pack. Belle noticed some water reservoirs and used her kicking ability to open them. Kit was able to take down Metal Sonic and the group got to the walls of the city. Sonic and Belle were on top of the wall when they saw Metal escaping and coming right for them. Sonic told Belle to stand behind him, but she stood in front of him as Metal barreled towards them, causing Metal to stop right in front of her. Belle told Metal Sonic that if he wanted Sonic, he would have to go through her. Metal paused for a moment, and before Belle could finish her next sentence, Metal smacked her aside. Sonic was disgusted and ready to fight, but an explosion in the center of the city caused Metal Sonic to leave to protect Eggman. Sonic asked Belle if she was okay, but she was too distraught to say anything.[26]

Belle and everyone else went to Tails' Lab after escaping the city. Belle was able to get Motobud on the way back and disassembled the robot. When Tails asked about her progress, she said there was a lot of damage and she wasn't sure what she was looking at or what she was looking for. Nevertheless, Belle said she would figure it out. When Sonic revealed the supposed fate of Surge to Kit, Belle helped comfort him. When Jewel reported to Sonic and Tails there was trouble in Central City, Belle decided to stay behind with Kit as he grieved. She watched a news report on Tails' computer about the attack, which caught Kit's attention. Kit tried to leave to help Sonic, but Belle stopped him, saying he needed to look out for himself. Kit reasoned he was made for Surge, and without her, he could be used by Sonic instead and unleashed his water coils. Belle tried to reason with him and used her kick power to dodge a coil, but she ended up hanging from the ceiling. Kit cut down some equipment and buried Belle under it. Belle called out to Kit, saying he already mattered, but he only gave her a look and left.[27]

Soon, Sonic and Tails returned and freed Belle. She apologized for what happened but Sonic told her not to worry. Belle soon noticed Whisper holding herself and her Variable Wispon in a corner. Belle introduced herself and said she knew about her after Tangle told her about her. Belle said she was good at fixing things and asked to take a look at her Wispon. Whisper handed it over and Belle thanked her.[28] Belle was indeed able to fix it and it was returned to Whisper.[29]

Future Growth and Urban Warfare

Belle would later return to Restoration HQ and help harvest the garden Silver and Blaze made in the Emeraldville Ruins. When Tangle began zealously digging up potatoes, she obliviously flung one into Belle's face.[30]

Following the destruction of Eggperial City, Belle joined her friends for a picnic to celebrate. She was relieved to see the Variable Wispon still functional, having scavenged parts from old Chaos Drives to repair it.[31]

Misadventures

Belle cleaned the Variable Wispon and Tangle and Whisper came to pick it up at the repair shop of the Restoration HQ. She complimented how well neat it was and said she could learn more about if Whisper was willing to allow her to tinker with it more. Tangle noted she wanted to break it apart again after just fixing it. Belle backed off and said it was safe to use. The Chief Mechanic asked if she had some gaskets ready, and Belle didn't realize he needed them today. She excused herself from Tangle and Whisper and got back to work.[32]

Second Chances

A few days later, Belle was maintaining the Variable Wispon in the machine shop when Sonic and Amy were showing Surge and Kit around. Seeing the late Starline's creations made her jump in alarm and fall over, exasperating Kit. She was skeptical when Amy said the pair had reformed, but Sonic reminded her that Eggman's own creations, including Belle herself, had been given second chances before. Surge then recognized the Variable Wispon, which she had broken when Whisper fought her in Central City, to which Belle angrily confirmed she had fixed and tuned it up since. When she mentioned she was about to return it to Whisper, Sonic and Amy came with her to introduce Surge and Kit to the Diamond Cutters. Surge, amused by Whisper's hostility towards her, eventually snatched the Variable Wispon from Belle and handed it to the wolf herself.[33]

Phantom Riders

Belle tied up

Belle would be tied up in the shuttle under unknown circumstances, soon after Tails and Amy would find her tied up.[34] Aboard the Restoration Shuttle, Tails and Amy are shocked to see Belle trapped inside one of the lockers. After they free her and reattach her separated hand, Amy asks Belle who did this to her. Belle explains that she was helping inspect the Extreme Gear but was stopped by the Clean Sweepstakes Security, who, according to Belle, had practically taken over the Restoration instead of helping it. Although she did not get a good look at him, she recalls seeing a creepy person giving orders to the security guards, with his hat and coat in particular standing out to her. Recognizing this description, Amy asks if he also had a cane, which Belle confirms, thus revealing to Amy who the leader of Clean Sweep Inc. is.[35]

Rough and Tumble chase Tails, Amy and Belle

Tails, Amy, and Belle head for Jewel's office, where they find Doctor Yolk and Nick guarding the entrance. Amy sends Belle forward to tell Jewel what is happening, but Doctor Yolk does not let her inside, stating that Jewel is too busy to see anybody. Belle notices that Doctor Yolk's bow tie is missing, only to realize it is the same bow tie she was tied up with. Doctor Yolk grabs her and prepares to lock her up again, causing Tails and Amy to rush to her aid. However, Nick appears in front of them. Belle pulls on her tail, causing her to kick Doctor Yolk and free herself from his grip. Tails pulls down the zipper on the back of Nick's mascot costume, revealing a familiar tail and smell to Amy. Rough and Tumble reveal themselves to the three, only to immediately start calling for backup. With Clean Sweepstakes Security on the way, Tails, Amy, and Belle are forced to flee, with the skunk brothers in pursuit.[36]

Tails, Amy, and Belle and running from Rough and Tumble who tells the trio to keep running when Amy spots another hallway and realizes it's a dead end when they hide around the corner until they hear someone and Rough ask if they had seen anyone run by and they respond saying they went the opposite way. Soon Tails, Amy and belle are greeted by Don who tells them they are bad hiders which ends up spooking them causing Amy to pull out her Piko Piko Hammer while Tails and Belle hold her back, Don ask to confirm if there Sonic's friends with Amy then asking if he's seen Sonic when she adds if he okay while Tails ask about sweepstakes and if it's still ongoing when Belle ask who he is and soon tells them to address him one at a time. Don introduces himself saying he is a friend of Team Chaotix and that they're missing, and he thinks there on the airship somewhere. Tails adds on saying that makes sense that they're investigating as well, when Amy asks where they are and why haven't they seen them across the ship somewhere, when Belle leads them to the engine room when Amy says that she hates it down there when suddenly they come to the door that leads to the main engine and Tails says he can use his Miles Electric to get it unlocked when Belle reminds Tails she works here and that she can open it. Once they're inside, Don and the others find the Chaotix in a cage sleeping when Vector jumps up excited to see them, and Don caringly tells them to get it together. Charmy then says that they almost got out when Espio asks what Don is doing here and Don responds saying that he's come to save them, and that Nite wouldn't let him hear the end of it otherwise, when Amy explains that they are also investigating Clean Sweep.

Belle opens the door

Amy further says that Sonic is outside keeping their security busy with Vector revealing that he has a USB drive with a every bit of dirty dealings and information he managed to get about Clean Sweep that would make them history once it gets out. Soon Tails and Belle unlock the cage and Charmy bursts out happy to be free when suddenly Rough, Tumble and Clutch appear along with his security. With Clutch saying that he did not expect this many guests further saying if you want something done do it yourself.[37] While everyone else was fighting Tails and Belle hurry over to try and open the door when Clutch uses his Gun Cane to hit them and barley misses Tails, with Clutch saying how he's only getting warmed up and further calling him a "kid". They soon rush up to safety when soon Tails and Belle open the door helping Charmy flee in the process until Belle announce that there stuck due to Clutch.[38]

In the engine room of the Restoration shuttle, with twenty-five minutes remaining before it self-destructs, Amy, Tails, and Belle attempt to open the door through different means, with the former swinging at it with her hammer while the latter two try to hack the door console open. However, neither method yields any success. Belle is surprised that the engine room has a self-destruct system, which only Jewel has the codes for, with Tails commenting that the system overloading itself is why the room is getting so hot, and that the entire door console has been fried. Back in the engine room, Espio reminds Tumble that he promised Vanilla he would turn over a new leaf, and asks why he has not done so. Tumble explains that he and Rough did, as they were originally only told to wear the mascot costumes, only for Clutch to continue asking more out of them. Don asks why they did not quit if they did not like it, although they are unfamiliar with the concept as they have always been fired before getting the chance to quit. This time, however, they decide to quit on their own and ask to be released from the cell, promising to help out. Espio tells them that the door was never locked and that the only prison was in their minds, allowing them to realize they can leave. The skunk brothers walk up to the door and begin pushing it together, causing it to actually move. Vector and Nite then start pushing with them, allowing them to eventually break out of the room.

Tails' group arrives at the main bridge, from which all of the Clean Sweep guards have fled. Despite Amy suggesting that they leave as well, Tails attempts to hack into the shuttle's system, only for the hardware to melt in front of him. Before the shuttle can get any closer to the city, it is suddenly pulled upwards by numerous hover cars using tethers to connect to the shuttle while the Babylon Rogues guide them, much to Amy's shock and Nite's delight. Belle is skeptical as to whether this will work, but Tails states that it is their only option now. Sonic suddenly crashes into the shuttle's glass window and tells the others to get onto the deck. Using her hammer, Amy shatters the window and gleefully hugs Sonic, who inadvertently surprises the Chaotix when he mentions Eggman's involvement. Jet boasts to Sonic about his team's efforts as they continue to pull the shuttle away from the city. A local news anchor is reporting on the situation, explaining that they have been unable to get in contact with the ship due to it possibly being abandoned or sabotaged, but the cameraman stops filming and decides they need to leave. Jewel decides that instead of stopping the ship, they will have to change its course to the Emeraldville Ruins, where Restoration HQ is. Sonic informs the Babylon Rogues of the change in plans, and Jet begrudgingly cooperates after being reminded by Wave that they do not have time to argue. Amy asks Jewel if Restoration HQ is empty, to which the beetle tearfully responds that it would be a better crash site than the city. Sonic comes back into the main bridge, asking why everyone looks upset. Amy tells him that the ship is going to crash into and explode on top of a building full of people, but Sonic notes that they still have time before that happens. As Jet informs him that they have turned the ship, Sonic challenges the hawk to a friendly competition: whoever can evacuate the most people from Restoration HQ first wins. Jet accepts, and he, Sonic, Tails, Amy, Belle, and the Chaotix set off for the HQ while Nite, Don, Jewel, Rough, and Tumble remain behind.

Belle and a repaired Motobud to the rescue

Sonic's group arrives at Restoration HQ, warning the people there about the imminent disaster. Tails follows Belle into the machine shop, which is too far away from the main hall for anyone in there to hear any warnings. Once the shop is clear, Belle plans on saving the incomplete Motobud, who she had been struggling to repair for weeks before the Clean Sweepstakes. Since moving his exposed circuitry could risk causing him to lose his memory, Belle decides to finish repairing him first. Despite her wanting them to leave, Tails and the Chief Mechanic volunteer to help her out while they can.

As Sonic returns to the destroyed Restoration HQ, Sonic calls out for any survivors. Tails shouts back as he walks forward from the nearby rubble, pointing to where Belle, Motobud, and the Chief Mechanic are trapped under some debris. Sonic instructs Belle to kick the beam above her on his mark, and for Tails to follow his lead. After he counts down to zero, Belle does as she is told, allowing Sonic to dash in and grab them. When Sonic is knocked back by a piece of rubble, Motobud suddenly takes flight, allowing them all to safely escape. Amy once again embraces Sonic, happy to see that he and the others are okay. Charmy is impressed by Motobud's ability to fly, to which Belle responds by explaining that although she borrowed some leftover Extreme Gear parts, it was Tails who got it working.[39]

Scattered Pieces

Belle's newfound confidence

Many days after the destruction of Restoration HQ, Silver decides to check on the Diamond Cutters, knowing they might be going through a hard time. He flies to a clean area in Emeraldville Ruins where he finds Jewel, Tangle, Whisper, Lanolin, and Belle, who is petting Motobud, sitting down with sad and worried expressions. Belle stays quiet while listening to Jewel's frustations and then getting comforted by Tangle, then hear Lanolin's apologies and her idea to help and then Tangle telling Whisper they will stop Mimic, not end him; and she is petting Motobud all this time.

Tangle then asks Belle if she will stay with Jewel and Lanolin, thinking she doesn't want to look for a fight. Belle replies she was scared about what to do with herself she lost her father "Mister Tinker." But after meeting her friends and surviving everything they've been through, she is not scared of the world anymore. Belle decides to travel the world with Motobud, to help other people and take some time for herself, away from "disaster scenarios". This makes Motobug gets excited and runs in circles around Belle. She also claims honeslty that although she truly loves her friends, they are disaster magnets, which Silver joyfully agreeing. Tangle awkwardly comments on how this is it for the Diamond Cutters, disbanding so quickly after forming, and apologizes to Whisper for the comment. But the latter responds it is okay, as they are better on their own terms, but she prefers to say "see you later" than "goodbye." Lanolin thanks her friends for letting her be a part of this and Jewel thanks Silver for his help. Silver claims that the Diamond Cutters are not done yet, he uses his psychokinesis to gather everyone together for a group hug and yells: "Diamond Cutters, together forever!" Later that day, Belle rides in a carriage pulled by Motobud (whom she has given a new appearance) and leaves Emeraldville Ruins with him to start her journey.

Personality

Despite being a robot, Belle is remarkably lifelike and self-actualizing. As such, she is able to express virtually all kinds of emotions, including despair.[3][19][16] Belle has a good heart and loves helping out people by fixing things and solving problems.[5] However, while enthusiastic, she is rather clumsy and naïve, which leads her into all kinds of trouble and mishaps. Apparently insecure, she tends to worry about what other people think of her.[15]

While Belle is quite shy and a bit timid, in the face of real danger and with adequate motivation, she is capable of leaping into action. Also, while she has the tools to defend herself, she is a pacifist and cannot fight, nor does she like it, so she tries her best to avoid conflict.[13] Also, being made of wood, Belle shows an aversion to fire. This also makes her reluctant to use her built-in lighter.[7] She is also very embarrassed about her squeaky clown nose, which she does not want her friends to know about.[20]

Despite being outwardly helpful, Belle used to be rather uncomfortable speaking honestly about herself and unwilling to talk about her past, especially about her creator, Dr. Eggman.[5] She considers Dr. Eggman and Mr. Tinker to be completely separate people, only considering the latter as her true creator.[16] However, after she gave up hope of reasoning with Eggman, she no longer sees any reason to hide the truth.[3] Belle also does not like to be ignored by Eggman or being taken lightly when sharing her life story.[16]

Belle has great hopes of freeing Dr. Eggman's Badnik army from his control, and believes in spite of her pacifistic ways that she should fight for anyone who can be liberated.[22] As such, Belle has resolved to take care of any robot that Eggman has abandoned or is in need of help, even if it means aiding robots as dangerous and irredeemable as Metal Sonic.[24]

Powers and abilities

HowBelleKicks

Belle has great reflexes, as she was able to successfully dodge all of Sonic's hand-to-hand combat attacks when they first met.[13]

Belle's fingers conceal various handyman tools inside them that she can reveal by opening her fingers.[4] Her nose also makes a funny noise when squeezed.[20] Her tail also possesses a unique function that makes Belle kick outwards automatically when it is pulled.[13] This functionality can be used by Belle to make herself perform enhanced jumps or surprise kicks.[4][5][20]

Besides physical talents, Belle is a highly skilled mechanic, being able to hotwire something as advanced as an Extreme Gear, undo locks, and successfully tinker with robots as advanced as Metal Sonic.[5][15][24] She can also repair weaponry such as Whisper's Variable Wispon.[28] Even Dr. Eggman himself has taken an interest in her skills as a mechanic.[24] Being Eggtech, she is also able to read Eggman's blueprint ciphers perfectly.[5] In addition, she can wirelessly interface with Eggman's machines, which allows her to access their files and thus connect to Eggnet.[24]

Relationships

Dr. Eggman

EggmanBelle40

He was Mister! Tinker! He was kind! And sweet! And funny! And... I loved him so much... I was so happy fixing the toys and rides he made for the children. He began to introduce me to the villagers. They were nervous around me, but willing to give me a chance. Then one day... he vanished. Not long after, Eggman attacked. The Metal Virus didn't affect me... and I was very alone. Eventually everyone was cured and came home... They broke down and recycled everything Mr. Tinker built... and got mad if I tried to fix anything. So I ran away. I looked for... him. I thought... maybe if I found him, I could talk to him. Make him come back... as Mr. Tinker.

— Belle the Tinkerer, Sonic the Hedgehog #44

After Dr. Eggman lost his memories and took on the persona of "Mr. Tinker" while at Windmill Village, he created Belle as an aide robot to help with his workshop endeavors.[16] Mr. Tinker was very kind-hearted and affectionate to Belle, whom he would love as if she was his own daughter.[22] He also tried to introduce her to the villagers so that they would not feel nervous around her. In return, Belle would refer to Mr. Tinker as her father. When Mr. Tinker went missing, Belle eventually learned that he was a monster in the form of Eggman all along. Belle did not believe this due to her love for her father and set out to find out the answers about him. She believed that she could manage to convince her father to reassume his kind personality. However, she would not admit that it was Eggman who made her.[16]

Despite Mr. Tinker and Eggman technically being the same person, Belle refuses to acknowledge Dr. Eggman himself as her creator.[5] Rather, she sees Eggman's Mr. Tinker persona as her true father.[16]

When Belle finally met Eggman, Eggman showed no desire to go back to being Mr. Tinker. However, when he found out that Belle took care of his alter ego, he would nonetheless give answers to her decisions. Eggman also tried to convince her of his superiority over Mr. Tinker, arguing that his achievements were nothing compared to his old persona's works. Heartbroken, Belle broke down in despair as it became apparent to her that reasoning with Eggman was a lost cause.[3] Despite this, she has no intention of letting him push her around any longer and wants to tell him a few things in spite. Regardless, she still misses Mr. Tinker and blames herself for not being able to bring him back.[22]

Eventually, Belle accepted that Tinker was gone forever.[22] As such, she started calling Eggman her "father". However, this was only because she had decided to say goodbye to him in order to move on. Belle would soon after stand by her decision, as she would refuse Eggman's offer to join the Eggman Empire, while also promising to take care of every robot that Eggman had abandoned.[24]

Miles "Tails" Prower

I maybe borrowed a few leftover Ex-Gear parts... but Tails is the one who got it all working!

— Belle the Tinkerer, Sonic the Hedgehog #75

Miles "Tails" Prower had a fascination with Belle from the moment they met. He first saw her with Sonic when they were searching for data to fix Omega with. Right from the start, Tails was the only one who showed sympathy and affection towards her, namely by protecting her from the overly impulsive Sonic when he thought that she was just another Badnik to destroy. In fact, he presented himself to her without the slightest sign of spite from her, but with admiration from her for being a robot made of wood, something he had never seen before. Belle, in return, would save Tails twice soon after, earning him his gratitude and managing to convince Sonic of her good intentions. Cream's account of the release of Clutch's former Chao later convinced Tails that Belle would be useful to him in his workshop, so Belle accepted the request. Although he understood that she did not come by accident, but rather intentionally and that she could be a creation of Dr. Eggman's, Tails continues to believe in Belle's kindness and sincerity, in wanting to be of service and help Sonic and the others.[5][13]

Early on, when Tails suspected that Belle had to be an Eggman robot, he was not angry at her, but admitted that he wanted more honesty from her. Also, when he tried asking her about her true creator, only to receive no answer, he merely sighed and put no further pressure on her.[5] After this theory was confirmed however, Tails only showed concerned for Belle's emotional state of being.[3] Nevertheless, he is glad to have her help in his workshop and enjoys working with her on different occasion.[5][22]

Sonic the Hedgehog

If you want to get to him, you have to go through me.

— Belle the Tinkerer, Sonic the Hedgehog #52

Despite knowing about Sonic the Hedgehog's "thing" with robots, Belle decided to follow him and Tails in the hope of finding her creator.[4] When they first met though, Sonic treated her as most other Badniks he had faced and tried to destroy her until Tails interrupted them.[13] Sonic initially remained suspicious about Belle and her creator, but as he began to take notice of Belle's kindness and character, he decided to trust her.[4] When Sonic later learned from Tails and Cream about how Belle had helped them, Sonic was convinced to apologize to Belle for having acted badly towards her and finally accepted her as an ally.[5] He also felt sympathy towards her when he found out that her creator, Mr. Tinker, returned to being Eggman and broke her heart.[3] Belle appreciates Sonic saying she plays an important role in their misadventures.[25] She even stood up to protect Sonic; standing in Metal Sonic's way as he was going straight after an injured Sonic.[26]

Tangle the Lemur

Weird Tail Buddies

Believing in yourself like that... It doesn't come easily to everyone. You're lucky.

— Belle the Tinkerer, Sonic the Hedgehog #47

Tangle the Lemur is Belle's former colleague at the Restoration. She met Tangle on her first day at work, where Tangle saved her from an accident she caused and provided her with companionship by sharing her thoughts with her and encouraging her not to give up. Tangle subsequently quickly became friends with Belle after learning of Belle's tail's function, which Tangle qualified as "weird". After that, Tangle named them "weird tail buddies."[15] Belle is comforted by Tangle's optimism and over-confidence despite her own awkwardness.[15] Belle was surprised when Tangle chose to trust her even after she was outed as a Badnik,[9] and she in turn chose to trust Tangle on her risky plan to rescue Sonic and co. from Eggman's test chambers in spite of initially protesting out of fear for her new friend's safety.[18]

Since them, Belle and Tangle have come to greatly care for each other, especially in difficult emotional situations. Tangle in particular was shocked to learn that Belle had been kidnapped by Dr. Starline.[40] Also, when Tangle found Belle with her hand's casing burned of, her first instinct was to help her friend and wrap up her hand.[20]

Chief Mechanic

When Belle the Tinkerer first met the Chief Mechanic, she was nervous thinking that he was strict and mean. After a while, the Mechanic would see how creative she can be and how she is good at building things that are helping the Restoration. Soon after he starts to develop a father and daughter relationship as when Dr. Starline attacked her he tried his best to take him down showing how much the two care for each other.

Dr. Starline

YOU INSENSITIVE JERK! YOU RUINED EVERYTHING!

— Belle the Tinkerer, Sonic the Hedgehog #44

[5] Belle was once kidnapped by Dr. Starline, who valued her as a priceless and unique piece of Eggman technology.[19] While Belle was initially concerned that Starline might want to destroy her, she soon learned that he was the reason Mr. Tinker became Eggman again, causing her to spitefully blame him for taking her father away and ruining her life.[19][16] Even so, Belle felt bad to see Starline mentally broken and left to die after his defeat in Eggperial City.[24]

Motobud

Belle and Motobud cuddling

Motobud is a unique Motobug created by Mr. Tinker, Dr. Eggman's kindly alter ego.[22] At first, Belle was scared of him, but when the robot helped put out her burning hand, she realized that there was more to him. In return, Belle protected Motobud from Tangle, who instinctively mistook him for an ordinary Badnik.[20] Belle soon after became attached to Motobud, who began to serve as her mount.[20][21] She also valued him for the fact that his programming might allow other Badniks to break freed from Eggman's control.[21][22] Belle was also not going to give Motobud back to Eggman, which led her to the difficult decision of cutting off his power when he fell under a control signal, despite fearing that she might not be able to restore his functionalities afterwards.[22]

Belle had been planning on saving Motobud, who she had been struggling to repair for weeks before the Clean Sweepstakes. When evacuating Restoration HQ before the shuttle's self-destruction, Belle and Tails headed to the machine shop to warn everyone there. Since moving Motobud's exposed circuitry could risk causing him to lose his memory, Belle decides to finish repairing him first, with Tails and the Chief Mechanic volunteering to help her out while they can. After the place is demolished, Sonic returns there to save Tails, Belle and Chief Mechanic, who were trapped under some debris. Belle manages to save them with a now repaired and flying Motobud. She would later give Motobug a new appearance, and the two would leave together to travel the world.

Metal Sonic

Metal, stop, please! You don't have to do this!

— Belle the Tinkerer, Sonic the Hedgehog #52

As with the other robots made by Dr. Eggman, Belle has displayed great empathy towards Metal Sonic, having risked her own life to fix him. Even so, Belle knows that they are not allies, and that he still remains aligned with Eggman's causes.[24] Belle attempted to reason with Metal Sonic, but the robot slapped her aside, hurting her emotionally more than physically.[26]

Kitsunami the Fennec

I'll stay with Kit. Somebody should be here for him.

— Belle the Tinkerer, Sonic the Hedgehog #53

Belle was helpful to Kit the Fennec when he was passed out in Eggperial City. When Kit arose, Belle still insisted on helping him despite Kit refusing and getting in a strum with her. Belle was shocked by Kit's abilities, but didn't treat him and different than her other friends.[26] When Kit was told Surge was gone, Belle comforted him and stayed behind with him in Tails' Lab when Sonic and Tails left. When Kit tried to leave to help them, however, Belle tried to make him stay for his own safety. Kit's mental programing made Sonic his new person to protect since Surge was gone, and he attacked Belle and buried her under some equipment. Despite this, Belle still tried to get through to him as he left the lab.[27]

Trivia

  • Belle was first revealed at the online New York Comic Con IDW Sonic Panel on 9 October 2020.[1]
  • "Mr. Tinker" and Belle's names allude to Tinker Bell.
  • Belle was originally planned to be introduced in the 2021 annual, then be incorporated into the main story when the opportunity arose. Alternatively, another option was for her story to be self-contained. However, after the annual was replaced with the 30th Anniversary Special, her introduction was moved to the main issues and her storyline was expanded and repurposed to connect several different story arcs post-Metal Virus.[41]
  • According to writer Evan Stanley, while Belle's chronological age is only around a year and a half, she is programmed to be like a 13-year-old.[2]
  • In TailsTube No. 6, Belle is possibly alluded to by Amy when she mentions having other robot friends.
