The Sphinx is an ancient creature who appears in the Sofia the First episode "The Lost Pyramid" as the main antagonist.
Role in the Series
When the evil wizard Hizzan hid the Oasis Stone in the fifth pyramid, he created the sphinx to guard and trap anyone who tried to reclaim it.
When Sofia and her friends found the pyramid, they went inside and managed to get past the booby traps. Princess Cassandra and Hildegard separated from the group to scout ahead. Hildegard found a switch with a jackal on it, when she pressed it, it opened a secret passageway which leads to the room where Oasis Stone is hidden. Eventually, Sofia found the passageway and caught up with Hildegard. When Hildegard was just about to grab the Oasis Stone, the Sphinx awoke and stopped her. After Hildegard falsely claims to have done everything involving the taking of the Oasis Stone, including overcoming Hizzan's booby traps, by herself when the Sphinx interrogated her, the Sphinx pretends to offer her a special reward, before proceeding to imprison her under a hole with the intention of keeping her there for all of eternity, despite Sofia's pleas.
When Cassandra, Amber, Clio, and Zooey arrive, they along with Sofia come up with an idea and confess to the Sphinx they were all responsible for the Oasis Stone's discovery. Just as she is about to capture them as well, Amber pulls down a torch, turning all the lights off, preventing the Sphinx from seeing anything. While she is distracted, Clio and Zooey rescue Hildegard. But when Hildegard finally takes the Oasis Stone, the lights turn back on. The princesses are still able to escape, except Hildegard whom the Sphinx chases after. Ultimately, Hildegard manages to escape as well with her friends right before the room's entrance collapses, presumably trapping the Sphinx inside, as she no longer chases after the princesses.
