Poppy

Poppy is a character appearing in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet. She is an Elite Four member of the Paldea region, specializing in Steel types.

Appearance

Poppy is a short and small girl with black and yellow hair and eyes. She wears a blue bonnet with a matching jacket and dress, a yellow pantyhose, blue shoes and black gloves. She also wears a necklace with a key on it and has blush stickers on her cheeks, symbolizing her happy personality. The Steel locket and the metallic silver coloring of her clothing reflects her Steel type preference.

Personality

Poppy is very young, cheery, and naive, reflecting her young age accurately. She resembles the "Kindergartener" Trainer class in her mannerisms, often struggling to find the correct words and pronouncing them; she even mistakes "revenge" as "avenge", though this does not stop her from trying to address others in a polite and fluid manner. She also has a habit of nicknaming her Pokémon. She looks up to Rika like a big sister, seeing her as a mentor and frequently asking her for advice when possible.

Though modest in her appearance (and sometimes expressing annoyance at her own age), she does show a lot of confidence in her training and skills, confidently recognizing the defensive nature of Steel types and when she laments that very few Trainers manage to defeat her.

Etymology

Poppy's name originates from poppy, a type of flowering plant.

Trivia

  • Poppy's existence as the youngest major Trainer may be a reference to Youngster Tristian using a Champion-level team in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, implying that age is not a factor in Pokémon-raising skill. She is also the youngest Elite Four member in the entire series, being nine years old.
  • Her distinct 1800s-esque design may be a reference to the steel age of technological development where metal lockets were a popular way to store precious valuables.
    • Her key is revealed to be a portable pouch that contains candies, according to her concept artwork.
  • To match her young age, Poppy commands her Pokémon via nicknames, such as "Tinkie" for her Tinkaton, and "Rajah" for her Copperajah.
