Ahn Hye-jin (Korean: 안혜진), commonly known by her stage name Hwasa (Korean: 화사) which is officially stylized as Hwa Sa and HWASA,[NT 1] is a member of South Korean girl group MAMAMOO, and is in charge of the group's rap and vocals. Additionally, she is a former member of the project group REFUND SISTERS as Sil Bi (Korean: 실비). Aside from MOOMOOs, Hwa Sa's official solo fandom is known as "Twits".

Hwa Sa started her solo career on February 13, 2019 with the digital single album TWIT, making her the third MAMAMOO member to debut as a soloist. She released her first extended play María on June 29, 2020, and then her second single album Guilty Pleasure on November 24, 2021. After leaving RBW and joining P NATION, Hwa Sa released her third digital single album I Love My Body on September 6, 2023. Her second mini album, O, was released on September 19, 2024.

Her upcoming event is the European leg of the [Twits] tour, with the tour's sixteenth show in Warsaw.

Biography

Ahn Hye-jin was born on July 23, 1995 in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do, her birthplace being a village in Jirisan.[3] She lived with her parents and two elder sisters, and became friends with Jung Whee-in in middle school.[4] She graduated from Wongwang Information Arts High School.

Ahn has wanted to become a singer since she was young, and was inspired by Beyoncé.[5] She considered acting to be the second thing she loves, wanting to participate in musicals or acting.[4] She joined RBW as a trainee in 2011 alongside Jung.[6] Ahn then debuted under the stage name "Hwa Sa" as part of the group MAMAMOO on June 19, 2014.

Hwa Sa's Career section excludes her activities with MAMAMOO, including sub-unit activities with Rapper Line.

2013

During this year, Hwa Sa has yet to officially debut as a singer. Regardless of that, she has featured in other singers' releases.

Hwa Sa featured in Standing Egg's single "Breakup for You, Not Yet for Me" alongside Park Shin-hye, released on November 15. This song is a remake of the title track of Standing Egg's 2010 album With.

2014

Hwa Sa featured in the duo Baechigi's single "Boy Jump", released on August 29.

2015

Hwa Sa featured in Primary's song "Mileage" alongside Paloalto from the album 2, released on August 12. She later featured Basick and Lil Boi's collaboration single "Call Me", which was released on October 5. She also featured in Kisum's single "LOVE TALK", released on October 29.

2016

Hwa Sa featured in the single "DDANG" by SURAN, released on June 10. She featured on the title track of Basick's extended play Nice, which is also titled as "Nice". The song and EP were released on August 2. Hwa Sa was also featured in HIGH4 20's debut title track "HookGA" from their single album of the same name, which was released on October 3.

2017

Hwa Sa featured on the title track of San E's extended play Season of Suffering. The song is "I Am Me", and it was released with the EP on January 23.

She appeared on MBC's King of Mask Singer as "Aerobic Girl" from episode 111 to 112.[7]

2018

On April 13 and 20, Hwa Sa appeared on MBC's Hyena on the Keyboard on episode 7 and 8. She also released a single titled "Don't" with Loco for the show.[8] Later on, Hwa Sa became a regular cast of MBC's show I Live Alone, from episode 257 to present time.[9]

On August 24, Hwa Sa featured on the title track of Woodie Gochild's album #GOCHILD, titled as "Cotton Candy". Later on November 8, she featured on a song from K.Will's album The 4th Album Part.2 [想像; Mood Indigo], titled as "Treat Me Bad".

2019

On February 13, Hwa Sa officially debuted as a soloist with the digital single album TWIT and its title track of the same name.[10]

She and Whee In collaborated for the title track of Kim Hyun-chul's album Fe's 10th - Preview. The song is titled "two girl love a man", and it was released on May 23.

2020

Hwa Sa collaborated with Dua Lipa for a remix of the song "Physical", which was released on March 17.[11] She also collaborated with ONEWE for the digital single album 3/4 and its title track "Q", released on May 26.[12]

Hwa Sa officially released her first soundtrack, titled "Orbit", for the SBS drama The King: Eternal Monarch on April 19.[13]

On June 15, RBW announced the release of Hwa Sa's first extended play, titled María.[14] Later on June 22, the album's track list was revealed alongside the title track, "Maria"; her previous single "TWIT" was also included in the album.[15] María and its lead single were released on June 22 at 6 PM KST.[16]

As part of the MBC show Hangout with Yoo, Hwa Sa became "Sil Bi", a member of the project group REFUND SISTERS (Korean: 환불원정대). The group debuted with the digital single "DON'T TOUCH ME" on October 10,[17][18] and concluded activities on November 14.[19]

Hwa Sa had a collaboration with EA Korea for the game The Sims 4, participating in their campaign "Play With Life".[20] On December 17, a song by Hwa Sa also titled "Play With Life" was announced with a teaser; the full MV was released the next day at 1 PM KST.[21] This song was released digitally later on January 29, 2021.[22] Hwa Sa later featured along with DPR LIVE on Uhm Jung Hwa's comeback single "Hop in", which was released on December 22 at 6 PM KST.[23]

2021

Hwa Sa and rapper Beenzino are featured on the title track of DPR LIVE's extended play IITE COOL, titled as "Hula Hoops". The song and album were released on July 23 at 6 PM KST.[24] Hwa Sa later collaborated with KINDA BLUE for their debut single "I can't make you love me", which was released on August 3 at 6 PM KST.[25]

On November 10 at 12 AM KST, a trailer was released for Hwa Sa's upcoming comeback.[26] The single album titled Guilty Pleasure was then announced on November 11, releasing later on November 24 at 6 PM KST with its title track, "I'm a B".[27][28] According to Hwa Sa, her upcoming full-length album is the continuation of a side track from Guilty Pleasure called "FOMO".[29]

Hwa Sa made an appearance on the final episode of the Mnet show Show Me the Money 10, featuring on Be'O's song "Nothing" along with MINO. The song was released digitally on December 4 at 12 PM KST.[30]

2022

Hwa Sa featured in a track titled "Now" from PSY's album PSY 9th; the track is a remake of the 1984 song "When the Rain Begins to Fall" by Jermaine Jackson and Pia Zadora.[31] The song and album were both released on April 29 at 6 PM KST,[32] and the performance video for the song was released on May 4 at 6 PM KST.[33]

Hwa Sa released a collaboration digital single album with Loco on July 25 at 6 PM KST,[34] titled as Somebody. Its title track is called "Somebody!", and the album has a side track called "Lemon".[35]

On December 18 at 12 AM KST (alternatively, midnight of December 17), the first episode of Hwa Sa's new and titular tvN program Hwasa Show was broadcasted. In the program, musicians are invited and interviewed by Hwa Sa to talk about music.[36] The show's first soundtrack volume was released digitally before the show's premiere on December 8 at 6 PM KST, titled as "just talking to myself".[37] The second soundtrack volume, "Grey Christmas", was released on December 20 at 6 PM KST.[38]

2023

Hwa Sa is featured in Epik High's album Strawberry, in one of their songs titled as "Catch". The song and the album were released on February 1 at 6 PM KST.[39] She is also featured in Jay Park's song, "Love Is Ugly", from his digital single album Yesterday. The song was released with the album on February 13 at 6 PM KST.[40]

Her television program Hwasa Show ended on February 19 (or February 18 at midnight) with the release of its last episode. The show's third and last soundtrack volume was sung by MAMAMOO as a group, as they (aside from Hwa Sa) were the show's guests in the last episode. The single was released digitally after the show ended on February 19 at 12 PM KST, and it is titled as "MMM Simile".[41]

Hwa Sa was confirmed to have joined a new tvN variety program titled as Dancing Queens on the Road, which is alternatively called "Dance Singer Wandering Group". The other cast members aside from her are Kim Wan-sun, Uhm Jung Hwa, Lee Hyori, and BoA; all five previously appeared in Lee Hyori's 2022 show Seoul Check-in. The program first aired on May 25 at 10:30 PM KST,[42] and ended on August 10 with its 12th episode.

On June 27, Hwa Sa's exclusive contract with RBW was announced to have ended.[43] Later on June 30, Hwa Sa officially signed an exclusive contract with P NATION; she did so on-stage during PSY's SUMMERSWAG2023 show, making P NATION her second and current company.[44]

It was announced by P NATION on August 15 that Hwa Sa will release a new album in September.[45] On August 29, the first batch of teasers for the comeback were revealed alongside the announcement that its release was on September 6 at 6 PM KST.[46] On the same day at 6 PM KST, the second batch of teasers were released alongside the reveal of the comeback being a digital single called "I Love My Body".[47]

On October 4, Hwa Sa released the digital single "Chili" at 6 PM KST. The song was created as part of the show Street Woman Fighter 2, and its MV was released later on October 10.[48][49]

2024

Hwa Sa's official fandom name was revealed on March 12 to be "Twits", which is a reference to her song "TWIT", and a teaser was also released a day prior.[50][51] Another teaser related to Twits was released on May 13, 2024.[52] On the 14th, Hwa Sa's official fan community site was announced alongside the singer's first solo tour, HWASA the 1st FANCON TOUR [Twits].[53]

The tour's first concert was in Seoul at Sejong University's Daeyang Hall on April 20.[54] A scheduler was released on April 1 for other locations, which are: Hong Kong, Taipei, and Singapore. More locations will be announced.[55] The second concert was held at the AsiaWorld–Expo in Hong Kong on May 11.[56] The next two shows were held in June, with the third on the 16th at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center in Taipei,[57] and the fourth concert on the 22nd at The Star Theatre in Singapore.[58]

On August 5, it was reported that Hwa Sa will be having her comeback with a new album in September.[59] On September 9, short-form content announcing the comeback was released, the first video at 12 PM KST and the second one at 6 PM KST.[60][61] Hwa Sa's second mini album released on September 19 at 6 PM KST, titled as O, and the track list announced on September 11 revealed that the album's title track is called "NA".[62]

The KBS2 show Moving Voices is a music and variety program which first aired on November 2, and Hwa Sa is part of the main cast alongside Suzy, SWJA, Sohyang, Henry, An Shinae, CLOUD, Jongho, Hongjoong, Nau Lee, and zai.ro.[63] In the show, the cast members perform guerilla busking performances in Mallorca, Spain and Munich, Germany. Hwa Sa appears in the Spain episodes alongside Sohyang, An Shinae, Henry, and zai.ro.[64]

Hwa Sa released a song produced by LOGOS (Park Woo-sang), titled as "Star", on November 14 at 6 PM KST. Hwa Sa's reveal as the singer of "Star" was announced on Park Woo-sang's Instagram account on November 7, while the track itself was first announced on November 4.[65][66] She is the first artist of the LOGOS Project.

2025

On December 3, 2024, the North American leg of Hwa Sa's "Twits" tour was announced, and it is specifically titled as "HWASA LIVE TOUR [Twits] in North America" to differentiate it from the previous Asian leg. The shows are all held in 2025, and the cities included are: Seattle, Oakland, Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Washington, Brooklyn, Boston, Toronto, and Chicago. The next nine concerts take place in March. The fifth concert was held at the Moore Theatre in Seattle on the 11th, the sixth concert held at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland on the 13th, the seventh concert at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles on the 16th, and the eighth concert at the Majestic Theatre in Dallas on the 19th. Next, the ninth concert was held at the Bayou Music Center in Houston on the 21st, the tenth concert held at the Coca-Cola Roxy in Atlanta on the 23rd, the eleventh concert at the Warner Theatre in Washington on the 25th, the twelfth concert at the Brooklyn Paramount in Brooklyn on the 27th, and then the thirteenth concert at the MGM Music Hall at Fenway in Boston on the 30th. The next two concerts were in April, in which the fourteenth concert was held at the History in Toronto on the 1st, and finally the fifteenth concert was held on the 3rd at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago.[67]

Later, on March 13, the European leg of Hwa Sa's Twits tour was announced. The cities included are: Warsaw, Frankfurt, Paris, Berlin, London, and Amsterdam. The tour's sixteenth concert will be held at Poland's Progresja. Two shows will take place in Germany, with the seventeenth concert being held at the Stadthalle Offenbach and the eighteenth concert at the Uber Eats Music Hall. Next, the nineteenth concert will be held at the O2 Academy Brixton in London. The tour's twentieth and last show will be held at Amsterdam's AFAS Live.[68]

On April 7, Ticketmaster announced the cancellation of the Paris show, which was originally meant to be the eighteenth show overall and the third of the European leg. The concert was supposed to be held on the 7th at the Dôme de Paris in Paris.[69] Then, on April 9, the tour organizer MyMusicTaste announced that all shows of the European leg will be postponed to the fourth quarter of 2025. This is reportedly due to internal circumstances at MyMusicTaste and with their European partners. New dates for each city will be announced by April 19;[70] as of April 22nd, no new dates have been announced by MyMusicTaste. Originally, these shows were to be held in May: the Warsaw show on the 2nd, the Frankfurt and Berlin shows on the 4th and the 9th, the London show on the 12th, and lastly, the Amsterdam show on the 14th.[68]
