ARTEMIS

"The lesson will be taught in due time, Aloy. Until then, we wait."
This article contains heavy spoilers. Read ahead with caution.

ARTEMIS is the subordinate function of GAIA tasked with preserving and reintroducing animal life to the planet as part of Project Zero Dawn.

Purpose

ARTEMIS was designed to preserve animal zygotes and microorganisms, and later reintroduce animal life to Earth, headed by the Alpha Charles Ronson. Once the terraforming systems restored the planet to a habitable level, ARTEMIS would introduce necessary "pioneer organisms" (microorganisms, insects, rabbits, hawks, foxes, wolves) to the Earth, further reviving the biosphere. The new humans would be taught by APOLLO how to reintroduce the other species.[1]

History

Development

Those preserved within ARTEMIS include badgers, bats,[2] bees,[3] bighorn sheep, birds of paradise,[4] blue-footed boobies, boars (including wild boars), butterflies (including what appear to be Menelaus blue morpho[5] and daggerwing butterflies[6]), chickens (known in the New World as fieldbirds),[7] chuckwallas, crabs, crows, deer,[8] doves,[9] ducks, eagles,[10] fireflies,[11] fish (including moonfish, salmon, striped bass and trout, as well as what appear to be black-and-gold chromis[12] and Garibaldi[13]), foxes (including red foxes), frogs,[14] geese, goats, gulls, hawks,[1] horned lizards, hornets,[15] jays, kestrels,[16] lobsters, owls, peccaries, pelicans, pigs,[17] pigeons, prairie dogs, rabbits (brown and white[18]), raccoons, rats (including brown rats), scorpions, snakes,[19] spiders,[20] squirrels, thrushes,[21] turkeys, vultures, wolves,[1] worms,[22][23][24] and what appear to be woodcocks.[25] Reports of colorful birds that able to speak in the Forbidden West have been documented by the Carja,[26] however, like many things in these reports, no sign of them can be found in Horizon Forbidden West.

Despite the efforts of the ARTEMIS team, many animal zygotes weren't able to be successfully preserved, including those of several species native to Myanmar due to the advancement of the Faro Plague,[1] and some Paradisaeidae zygotes due to a lack of time.[27]

Results

ARTEMIS' primary objective was for the most part successful, as evidenced by the fauna occupying the world. However, ARTEMIS' success was hindered by the purging of the APOLLO database. Without the database, humans never learned about the terraforming system, including ARTEMIS, let alone how to use it for its intended purpose. As a result, the re-introduced fauna remained limited to the pioneer organisms.

While wolves are among the pioneer organisms listed by Charles Ronson,[1] Aloy and Enjuk don't recognize the wolf as a contemporary animal.[28] Whether ARTEMIS failed to reintroduce wolves or they simply don't live in the areas known to Aloy and Enjuk is unknown. They also don't recognize the bison, black bear, cougar, grizzly bear, moose or mule deer,[28] with Stemmur not recognizing a silhouette of a reindeer,[29] making it unlikely that these animals have been reintroduced, or at least, not in the areas known to them.

Many animals can be found in the world or are mentioned to exist in the world aren't noted among the pioneer organisms by Charles Ronson.[1] Whether this is due to the list of pioneer organisms being incomplete, out-of-date or ARTEMIS reintroducing the additional animals itself during independence is unknown.

Independence

On August 26, 3020,[30] the Extinction Signal sent by Nemesis arrived at GAIA Prime and turned her subordinate functions, including ARTEMIS, into independent AIs. This led the subfunction HADES to initiate his purpose of destroying the biosphere. To prevent this, GAIA initiated her self-destruct in an attempt to destroy HADES, which would also destroy her and the other sub-functions. However, in response to this, HADES released a virus that unshackled all the other subordinate functions from GAIA, allowing them to escape.[31] Where ARTEMIS escaped to is unknown.

At some point, Far Zenith found and captured ARTEMIS.[32]

After Far Zenith was defeated, ARTEMIS was recovered and reinstated into GAIA.[33]
