Rats are a species of wildlife in Horizon Zero Dawn and The Official Horizon Cookbook: Tastes of the Seven Tribes. A different rat, the brown rat, appears in Horizon Forbidden West.
Standard rats seen in the Horizon series appear to be hairless fancy rats.
History
In the Old World
Rat zygotes were among the animals that were successfully collected before the Faro Plague eradicated the species and stored within ARTEMIS for later use in Project Zero Dawn.
In the New World
Despite not being among the animals listed by Charles Ronson as a pioneer organism,[1] rats were released into the wilds, becoming common in the ruins and near the settlements of the Sacred Lands and the Sundom. Whether they are indeed pioneer organisms and were released under GAIA's orders or were released by ARTEMIS during its independence is unknown.
The Official Horizon Cookbook: Tastes of the Seven Tribes
Pentalla found two rats while looking to prepare a Tenakth meal for Sun-King Avad, wanting to use Tiny Meat from them. Horrified at the idea of serving rats to the Sun-King, Milduf sabotaged the coals with Kindleweed Oil to ashen the rats. Still determined to feed the ashen rats to Avad, Pentalla was convinced to back off by Milduf.[2]
Behavior
Rats are docile and quick to flee upon detecting Aloy, never turning aggressive. Their small size and agility can make them very hard to kill.
Uses
Rats are the only source of Rat Bones, Rat Skin and Tiny Meat.
