Nintendo (Japanese: 任天堂 Nintendō) is a video game and video game console company based in Kyoto, Japan, with other divisions in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe. It is known for several popular video game franchises such as Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Pokémon. It was founded in 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi and produced playing cards. It is recognized as being among the largest producer of video games and has sold more than two billion video games worldwide. Over time, Nintendo has manufactured notable home video game consoles: such as the Nintendo Entertainment System, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, the Nintendo 64, the Nintendo GameCube, the Wii, Wii U, the Nintendo Switch, and the Nintendo Switch 2. They have also manufactured many handheld game systems, including six versions of the Game Boy, the Nintendo DS, and the Nintendo 3DS.
Nintendo purchased an 80% stake in Monolith Soft from Bandai Namco in 2007, eventually leading to the development of the original Xenoblade Chronicles for the Wii. [1] Over time, Monolith Soft has produced more titles in the Xenoblade Chronicles series exclusively for Nintendo consoles, and has collaborated on projects for Nintendo's other in-house studios such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Nintendo acquired 100% ownership sometime in 2024, after purchasing the remaining 4% of shares from Monolith Soft's founders Tetsuya Takahashi, Yasuyuki Honne, and Hirohide Sugiura.[2]
Nintendo Switch Online
Nintendo Switch Online is a service run by Nintendo that allows users to be matched up with other players and play games with each other. It is used by games for the Nintendo Switch and is the successor to the Nintendo Network service. It is requires the user to pay a subscription fee in order to allow players to use online functionality with games, such as online multiplayer and user created content. The service also offers a selection of classic games to play, along with a selection of other benefits.
Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition
Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition has online mechanics supported by Nintendo Switch Online.
Missions & Rewards
Missions & Rewards were added on March 1st, 2022 within the Nintendo Switch Online app on the Nintendo Switch's HOME Menu. This feature provided Nintendo Switch Online users another method of earning Platinum Points (which previously could only be earned on My Nintendo) by completing missions, but also included a Rewards page where Platinum Points could be redeemed for exclusive icon elements for their Nintendo Switch profile. Rewards are only available for a limited-time distribution period; during this period, rewards will rotate on a weekly schedule. Previously available icon elements may become available once again at a later date.
There are three types of icon elements:
- Character elements, which cost 10 Platinum Points. Certain character elements come with a set background that cannot be changed, which prevents them from being used alongside background elements as well as the default Nintendo Switch background colors.
- Background elements, which cost 5 Platinum Points. Character elements appear in front of background elements. Background elements cannot be used without a character element.
- Frame elements, which cost 5 Platinum Points. Frame elements surround background and character elements. A selection of solid color frames are available by default and can be used alongside any icon element that was purchased with Platinum Points.
Icon elements cannot be used alongside other elements from different games. For example, a Xenoblade Chronicles series character element cannot be used together with a The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild background element.
