- — Juniper
Juniper (Japanese: ユズリハ, Yuzuriha) is a character in Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
Overview
Juniper, also known as Ghostbow Juniper, is the commander of Colony Tau, where they usually live quietly in the forest. Juniper is a companionable person and is trusted by their colony mates. Juniper is very agile and can move easily on trees and thin ropes. Juniper is an Agnian human with Gormotti and Blade Eater traits.
Juniper becomes a Hero after completing Natural Selection. Their Class Rank is increased to 20 by completing the Ascension Quest Survivors.
Personality
On the surface, Juniper appears mellow and well-spoken. They outwardly adopt many of the beliefs and traditions of Colony Tau, stating that they aren't afraid of death and only view it as a consequence of nature and being too weak. However, they also internally care greatly for their fellow Colony members, and would rather not see them die. Near the end of Natural Selection, they adopt a more forward-looking attitude towards life, and wishes to see Colony Tau adapt and evolve.
Story
At some point in the past, Colony Tau was in a battle with a Kevesi colony. However, the tide quickly turned in favor of Keves due to their superior numbers. The Former Commander was the first to fall in battle, but not before promoting Juniper as the next commander, and made preparations for them to escape. But Juniper was cornered, and only managed to escape this battle as the Colony's Off-seer Yeattie sacrificed himself by acting as a decoy so they could escape. The Former Commander's care for his fellow soldiers inspired Juniper, who would then carry on his legacy and kindness.

As the result of the Colony's Flame Clock running low, the soldiers of Colony Tau are forced to set up ambushes on monsters or soldiers passing by. Juniper first encounters the party at the Vista of Rhonnar as the result of one such ambush set up by Juniper as well as Selin, Carson, Honorine and Imogen. The soldiers from Tau engage the party in combat, but ultimately have to retreat due to the adverse effects of a low Flame Clock pushing Imogen to her limit. Noah suspects the Flame Clock as the cause, and attempts to seek out the Colony to offer assistance.
Juniper greets the party at the Colony Tau Entrance, and explains that their Colony was abandoned by the Consul U. Noah offers to free the soldiers of Colony Tau from their Flame Clock, and Juniper agrees to hear them out. They then go on to explain that due to their abandonment by their Consul, they cannot acquire sufficient life force for their soldiers, and that they only found the party as their scouts stumbled upon them while searching for unknown monsters, and had no idea that they were the Ouroboros the rest of Agnus was hunting down. Juniper goes on to explain that the people of Colony Tau don't actually fear their Flame Clocks running out, and see no reason to fear their lives expiring as a result of the natural processes of the world. Noah asks how they could live without hope, to which Juniper admits that the end of their Colony would bring them a bit of sadness. Then Selin rushes in to report that the monsters they were hunting took down the soldier Geum and are heading towards the Colony.

Juniper and the party head towards the Colony's entrance to take down the three Annon Rhinons at the gate. Once they defeat the Rhinons, Juniper expresses relief that Geum is okay, and notes the contrast between them worrying about their friends and their Darwinist philosophy. Juniper then goes on to admit that they were actually keen on the idea of destroying their Flame Clock from the start, but was scared to go against the status quo ingrained into the fabric of Colony Tau. But Noah's offer gave them a way to achieve that goal guilt-free. Noah then states his belief that them fighting to escape despair was not weakness, but strength, and by accepting a new reality that they could become even stronger. Juniper then agrees to let them destroy their Flame Clock, and afterwards admits that it's surprisingly easy to accept a new reality. They then admit their wish to learn more of the world, and ask the party if they could accompany the party, to which the party agrees. Juniper also believes that the Colony as a whole needs to evolve too, and has a few younger recruits sent out to other freed Colonies as well to learn from their experience and ways of life.
Later on, the Consul U returns to the Colony for the first time in a while, amongst many dead Volffs strewn about. She claims to be there to meet with Juniper, and also that she was the one who protected the Colony from the Volffs. She then asks the Ouroboros to find Twineturf to get rid of the "nuisances" for her while she meets with Juniper. Upon acquiring the necessary amount, Juniper calls on them to come back to the Colony. The party then meets back up at the Colony, and Consul U explains that she will be turning the Twineturf into a pulp and then burn it in a bonfire to create a fragrant aroma. As a result, Annon Rhinons are once again drawn towards the Colony, which the party and Juniper engage with. While fighting the relentless waves of Rhinons, Consul U explains to Juniper that she wants to see Colony Tau fight to their limit, until they suffer and die. Having been told that the suffering of themself and their comrades brings the Consul great pleasure, Juniper is shocked, but ultimately has to join the fight to protect the Colony. The Consul then reveals that the previous Rhinon attack was orchestrated by her as well.

Once Juniper and the party defeated all of the Rhinons, Consul U reveals to the party that she was never a hands-off Consul, and all of the traditions of Colony Tau were set in place by herself, and had all of the soldiers killed by monsters before reaching their Homecoming Ceremony. And when the Colony's soldiers were few, she staffed them with more soldiers, and sent strong enough monsters to fill their Flame Clock, all for the purpose of seeing the face of Juniper in a despair-filled rage. She then engages Juniper and the party, but is defeated. Not being able to forgive her for disrespecting the Colony's vow to survive, Juniper deals the killing blow to her. Despite the revelation that Colony Tau's traditions were the result of the Consul's machinations, Juniper and the rest of the Colony choose to continue their traditions while also adapting when necessary and looking towards the future.
Gameplay
Juniper uses the Stalker Class, an Attacker class that wields the Luminescent Bow and specializes in attacking enemies' blind spots for a stealthy elimination.

Etymology
Junipers are a family of coniferous trees. Their Japanese name ユズリハ (Yuzuriha) is the common name for Daphniphyllum macropodum, a shrub or small tree found in China, Japan and Korea. The timber is used in China in construction and furniture making. It is grown as an ornamental plant, chiefly for its foliage.
Notes
- ※ There is no specified or no defined gender identity for or by Juniper in-game, unlike for the other main or Hero characters. According to the game files, the internal values assigned to the "gender" of the characters are 0 for male, 1 for female, and the undefined value 2, which was assigned to the character Juniper. For this reason, Juniper's gender identity is expressed by the non-binary gender umbrella term or the X-gender umbrella term in Japan. Moreover, Lilly Hart[2] who voices Juniper in the English version[3], confirmed the non-binarity of their gender identity.[4] More information is reported here.
