K (Japanese: ケイ, Kei) is a character in Xenoblade Chronicles 3.

Overview

K is the Consul of Colony 4. He has a robust, barrel-chested build. He wears a rounded helmet that is adorned with what appear to be breathing tubes and and a pointed collar on the back, which make his silhouette resemble a classic caped vampire. Despite his heavy use of his Iris, K tends to keep his eyes closed; when he does open them, they're shown to be dark red. In his Moebius form, K appears as a heavyset bipedal monster with horns, a plate on the top of his head that extends over his back like a cape, a pointed nose, a beard, flat teeth that resemble those of an herbivore, a hoop around his waist, and an infinity symbol on his solar plexus. When K's corpse is unmasked, it's revealed that he was an older man with a wrinkled face, wispy brown hair, and thick eyebrows with slits cut into them. He also wore spade-shaped earrings hanging from chains.

K has a boisterous and flamboyant personality. He knows he's a bad guy and delights in putting on a show for his enemies. He adores being the center of attention, acting dramatically and chewing the scenery. He also enjoys striking poses and strutting around in a playful manner. Upon his defeat, he cries out that he "just wanted to play around a little more." K isn't outwardly sadistic—he sees soldiers as resources for him to use and will kill them without hesitation, but he doesn't revel in doing so, unlike some of the other Consuls. K is a bit of a neat freak and doesn't hesitate to air his grievances when his standards are not met. Ethel describes him as "a particularly punctual sort of character." K is known for relying on his Iris to track his enemies, which is what ultimately leads to his defeat.

Story

K first appears looking at D's signal that Ouroboros has reemerged. He then has the other colonies turn on them like the other Consuls. K is present at Origin during an argument between the other Consuls. After Z interrupts their argument, N appears from the shadows to ask K if he will go to fight Ouroboros to which he agrees.

Arriving at Colony 4, K is greeted by Ethel and Bolearis but he is displeased by the dust and fog surrounding the Colony, mockingly stating that the place befits its Dirt rank status. Inside his quarters, K reveals the reason for his visit to Ethel, requesting that she take care of some "vermin", a band of deserters from both sides. Ensuring their complete loyalty, K manipulates the Irises of Ethel and her soldiers so that they will see Noah and his allies as enemies as part of his plan.

While passing through the Eagus Wilderness, Noah and his allies are hunted down by Ethel and Colony 4's Ferronis. The party retreat into an area filled with Black Fog which affects K's control over Ethel's Iris and allows her to see their true identities. Angered, K teleports in front of the party to fight them himself, deeming Ethel pathetic and striking her with lightning. Though K is easily defeated by the party in his base form, he transforms into his Moebius form and consumes the life energy from Colony 4's Flame Clock, causing the party to stand down out of fear of hurting their friends. Noah hatches a plan to break the Flame Clock despite the risks but his and Mio's attempt is unsuccessful due to Noah's Blade being unable to cut through the Ferronis. With Riku's encouragement, Noah tries again to break the Flame Clock, this time using Lucky Seven and is successful, much to K's utter surprise and confusion. With the Flame Clock broken, Noah and the party are able to easily defeat K who cries out in fear as he dies.

After K's defeat, Lanz decides to remove his mask and the party are surprised to find that his face is old and wrinkled like Guernica Vandham's, with Eunie questioning if this is what aging is like. As Ethel comes to her senses, K's body fades away and Noah, feeling K's essence brush past him, decides to send him off in spite of his evil acts in life, though the others were surprised he'd do that.

Legacy

Because using his own Iris has led him to his own death, the other Consuls comments that K is a "one-trick pony". Furthermore, all of them have abandoned that method of controlling their colonies entirely. Although, B thought K's plan was sound and would've worked if he hadn't had the bad luck of there being Black Fog in the area.

The artist Stefaan is revealed to have painted a portrait of K prior to his demise, having previously been a fan of the Consul. The Ouroboros take this portrait to the City to be appraised by Wellwell to help further Stefaan's artistic ambitions.

Trivia

• Given K's elderly appearance when unmasked, it is possible that he was a member of the Lost Numbers prior to becoming a Consul, rather than a Kevesi or Agnian soldier.
