Available to NATO forces, the Leopard C1 is a Canadian main battle tank.
History
To replaced the Centurion, Canada acquired 127 Leopard C1 tanks (equivalent to Leopard 1A3 with laser rangefinder) in 1978–79 for its Land Forces. Most of these were stationed in Germany with the armored regiment of the 4th Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group during the Cold War, with a six retained at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown, New Brunswick for training. In 1977 prior to delivery of these new Leopards the Canadian government leased 38 Leopard 1A1 tanks from the contractor in order to begin training crews from the 4th Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (4CMBG) based in West Germany. These tanks equipped the Royal Canadian Dragoons (RCD) that competed against other NATO tank crews and won the Canadian Army Tank competition in 1977. The Leopard equipped armored regiment was equipped with 4 Leopard in the Headquarter Squadron, three Tank Squadrons each with 19 tanks in four platoons of 4 and three more in the Squadron HQ. And another squadron was planned to be flown over from Canada.
Ingame
The Canadian Leopard C1 is actually a Leopard 1A3 with some local improvements which makes it fit somewhere between a West German Leopard 1A3 and a Leopard 1A4. It was bought from Germany as a replacement for the aging Centurion that were the Canadian MBTs of the day.
In ALB, Canadians have C1s both as a MBT and as a command tank.
