Canada purchased 124 Ferret Mk.1 in 1954 which they left service in 1981. Ferret Mk.1 did not have a turret like their later counterparts. These were used in three militia reconnaissance regiments before being issued to issued in small amounts to armored regiments and field engineers with one in each field engineer troop. Ferret Mk. 1 served in the various UN missions like UNEF starting with 56 Recce Squadron in the Sinai Desert and UNFICYP in Cyprus along with service in armored regiments in West Germany and Canada.
Ferrets were replaced by Lynx in the armored regiment.
