~ Reclusa during his final showdown against Mario and Luigi inside the Soli-Tree. |
Reclusa is the overarching antagonist of the 2024 role-playing video game Mario & Luigi: Brothership.
He is an ancient biomechanical entity who was responsible for the destruction of several realities before reaching Concordia. It is here that Cozette, who, before her transformation into the skull-wire madman named Zokket, found his egg. He then uses the latter, who works to revive Reclusa using a dangerous chemical called Glohm, coupled with the Extension Corps, to further its goals.
These orchestrated goals include not only the destruction of Concordia, but also the separation of its islands and people in order to establish a condition of solitude without bonds and friendships, hence loneliness for his amusement and pleasure. After Zokket's defeat, his egg accumulates enough of the toxin to hatch himself. He is the arch-nemesis of Connie, the student of Cozette, as well as one of the most difficult and dangerous foes that Mario and Luigi ever battled against.
Appearance
Reclusa's face is a digital screen meant for conveying his facial expressions and emotions, even having the power to imitate and copy Mario and Luigi's abilities. He can generate a number of drones that are capable of replicating the brothers' hat logos. He has two large tentacles embedded on back of his head which also doubles as his upper hands in addition to his regular lower hands, with four additional smaller tentacles also present in the same head area (essentially his "hair" of sorts). Not different from previous Mario & Luigi antagonists, he continues the trend of having cloaks on the legs, with Reclusa's cloak colors and overall color scheme being red and violet with white plating in addition to stripes.
During the final battle, Reclusa has two more forms that he can assume. Weeping Reclusa is the name of the form the monster assumes when fusing with the Soli-Tree, manifesting as a sentient tree monster with dark purple bark, glowing eyes, and pentadactyl hands, and the other form he can assume is the Weeping Core, which is a white ball with a single eye and blood red spikes.
Biography
Background
“ | Everyone carries some Glohm with them. Dark feelings... Loneliness... Disconnectedness... Reclusa's a monster that turns lonely feelings into energy. And he's been around since long before any of us were born. He hatches from an egg and fills the world with loneliness... When his power is up, he recharges in his egg. If we don't stop him... he'll keep doing that, again, and again. | „ |
~ Shun explaining Reclusa's backstory and purpose. |
Reclusa is an ancient, millennia old, bio-mechanical monster, who has existed for a very long time, as Concordia wasn't the first world he destroyed. His egg is not necessarily something it was born from, nor is it a prison, but where he goes to recharge after doing what he's putting Concordia through to other, less fortunate worlds, like a charging station of sorts.
At some point, Reclusa, through the egg, corrupted and brainwashed Cozette, a Wattanist and Connie's big sister and mentor with Glohm, therefore becoming Zokket and founded the Extension Corps and caused Concordia to be separated into islands for many years to come.
Mario & Luigi: Brothership
Reclusa is first shown in his egg form when Mario, Luigi, and Snoutlet encounter Zokket in his fortress, lamenting that he does not have enough Glohm to repower Reclusa. After his defeat, Zokket gives the last of his energy to the egg, freeing Cozette but also reawakening Reclusa. Immediately, he captures the Concordians in his flowers and enters the Soli-Tree, awaiting Mario and Luigi's arrival.
Reclusa's flowers surrounding his fortress send Mario and Luigi into a simulation of the Mushroom Kingdom upon their arrival, where they witness Princess Peach bonding with Bowser in a seemingly peaceful time, but they manage to escape much to Reclusa's chagrin. Deploying a horde of minions to defeat the heroes as he continues retreating, the Mario Bros. are narrowly rescued by Bowser, who is intent on defeating Reclusa as well.
While further retreating to the Soli-Tree, Reclusa engages in a battle with Mario and Luigi, ending with him feigning defeat long enough to reach his destination and become Weeping Reclusa. Easily defeating Bowser and his troops, Weeping Reclusa summons a dark fog that causes Mario and Luigi to fall unconscious, them being saved by Connie watering them with the energy of their Bonds and allowing them to enter the Soli-Tree.
Within the Weeping Core and eventually by himself, Reclusa engages in a long and grueling final battle with Mario and Luigi, eventually defeated by their hands. To the bitter end he does not regret his misdeeds, feigning remorse before destroying the battlefield floor in a final desperate act to defeat Mario and Luigi. However, this last effort is unsuccessful, resulting in Mario and Luigi defeating Reclusa, smashing his screen.
Reclusa begins complaining about his failure to enforce eternal solitude upon Concordia, failing to understand the meaning of the world's Bonds. Connie confronts his hypocritical nature, telling the entity that while one can do certain things alone, there are also many things that can be done with the power of teamwork. Further incensed, Reclusa continues to lament his failures, and is ultimately told by Connie to disappear as he has no place in Concordia. Reclusa’s digital screen then powers down for good and ceases to be soon after, with the Soli-Tree crumbling and exploding without it taking Fortress Zokket along with it.
Personality
Reclusa can be described as bratty, immature, and childish who takes sadistic glee in breaking things, treating the worlds and their inhabitants as toys for him to play with and break. And when things don't go his way, he's prone to tantrums like a spoiled child being made to face consequences.
He deems bonds to be troublesome due to "worrying about others" and others can do anything solo. As such, he is left baffled when Mario and Luigi's bond of brotherhood pull them through his assault and defeat him, croaking about his misconception about bonds, which Connie quickly refutes. This immaturity and overconfidence drive Reclusa to moments of volatile anger—full-blown tantrums when Mario, Luigi, and Connie defy him. His efforts to tear them apart, both physically and emotionally, fail as Mario and Luigi’s unbreakable brotherhood endures his onslaught. Their bond stands as a testament to the strength that comes from unity, something Reclusa fails to comprehend.
In a climactic moment, Reclusa’s disbelief and frustration come to a head as he confronts his flawed understanding of bonds. With childlike indignation, he dismisses their unity as foolish, but Connie delivers a cutting rebuttal, shattering his self-centered perspective on connection. Ultimately, Reclusa’s defeat not only marks a victory over his schemes but also serves as a powerful lesson on the resilience and value of friendship, love, and brotherhood—concepts he had so carelessly disregarded.

Trivia
- His name is derived from the word "recluse", which is defined by living a solitary life independent from other people, as do his primary goal. It might also be in reference to "Medusa", a gorgon from Greek mythology best known for having snakes for hair and the ability to turn people into stone, which resemble the cables coming from Reclusa's head and his one attack that turns one of the brothers gray and immobile.
- Reclusa (alongside Dimentio, Princess Shroob, The Shadow Queen, Cursa, and the Luigi's Mansion version of King Boo) is one of the most unhinged and psychopathic villains in the entire Mario canon, as he is a bio-mechanical madman with zero regard for anyone or anything but himself who much like them takes childish, sadistic glee in the chaos he causes.
- If one were to sit on the title screen for a while when booting up the game after the reawakening of Reclusa, he would fly out of the Soli-Tree, inspect the main menu's options, and then jumpscaring the player by getting close to the screen.
- Another instance of this happening is during the final battle, where when his HP is depleted by at least 50%, he abruptly jumps at the screen and makes an angry expression towards the player.
- Reclusa is the second villain of Mario series whose actions are motivated by nihilism, after Count Bleck. Unlike Bleck, however, Reclusa's nihilism wasn’t born from tragedy, rather by his own selfish ambition and immaturity.
- Reclusa is the first final boss of the Mario & Luigi series to have zero association and connection to Bowser, apart from them being outright enemies where the Koopa army fires cannons at him.
- Furthermore, Bowser didn't even properly know of Reclusa's existence, as he still believed he was fighting against Zokket.
- Reclusa is one of the few Mario final bosses to not have an official artwork, the others being the Shadow Queen and Elder Princess Shroob.
- He is the only villain to meet his demise in Brothership, as Zokket and the Extension Corps redeem themselves.
