~ Dimentio during the final battle.
Now the Chaos Heart is mine! I will use it to destroy all worlds...and create perfect new ones! So, shall we get started? Now I have all I need...to become the king of all worlds!
~ Dimentio becoming Super Dimentio.

Dimentio (in Japanese: ディメーン, Dimēn) is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Count Bleck) of the 2007 action role-playing game Super Paper Mario.

He is a magician and a former minion of Count Bleck, who fights Mario and his allies several times during their quest to stop the Chaos Heart and the Void. However, he betrays Bleck and reveals himself as the true mastermind behind the events of the game, usurping control of the Chaos Heart and unveils his ultimate plan: to destroy and remake the multiverse in his own design.

His character theme is "Dimentio, Charming Magician", his battle theme is "It's Showtime", and Super Dimentio's theme is "The Ultimate Show".

Biography

Past

So, Count Bleck has four minions, as you know. I hear that one of them, Dimentio, wields powerful magic. I don't know where he comes from or who he is... But I hear he approached and befriended the count all on his own. And the count even turned him away once... Until he read in the Dark Prognosticus about the role of someone similar... Why was he mentioned in the Dark Prognosticus? Sounds fishy to me!
~ Carson on Dimentio

Dimentio's early life and what exactly he was is unknown and his past is entirely unknown, with nothing of him revealed until his introductory meeting with Count Bleck. Apparently, Dimentio approached Count Bleck on his own at first, offering to serve him. However, Bleck turned down Dimentio being nonetheless leery of his presentation. It was only after reading about him in the Dark Prognosticus that Bleck allowed Dimentio into his forces. Dimentio is seen with O'Chunks, Mimi, and during several of the meetings with Count Bleck's henchmen. Even before betraying the Count, he holds disdain for all of Bleck's other followers. He takes every opportunity to mock his fellow minions over their failures and even persuades them to disobey Count Bleck's orders on one occasion.

Super Paper Mario

Dimentio is first seen with the rest of the Minions when Count Bleck and Nastasia rally their army when they sense the first Pure Heart being placed in its Heart Pillar; marking the emergence of the Four Heroes. Mario's first encounter with Dimentio comes before fighting Fracktail. Initially, Fracktail is only a security device meant to deliver the Pure Heart to the legendary Prognosticus Hero, but Dimentio appears and threatens Mario before using his magic to turn Fracktail on the plumber which results in Mario having to destroy Fracktail.

DimensionD-SPM

In Chapter 3-3, Dimentio fights Mario, Peach, and Bowser himself near the top of the Dotwood Tree, transporting himself and the party to Dimension D, a creation of Dimentio's meant to multiply his power by 256 times. The plan backfires when the heroes' powers are amplified as well and one of them defeats Dimentio. However, Dimentio was merely testing the heroes, to see if they had the potential to fight Bleck. Dimentio later encounters the party in the Floro Sapiens' lair of Chapter 5, where he uses a Floro Sprout to brainwash O'Chunks into a more powerful "O'Cabbage" who randomly shouts the names of vegetables.

After Bleck successfully destroys Sammer's Kingdom, the setting for Chapter 6, Dimentio then appears before a distraught Mr. L (Luigi) and supposedly "kills" him in a magical explosion. He then appears before Mario's party in Merlon's house and does the same to the trio. Mario and his party are sent to The Underwhere (The Hell of ended games), but they are reunited with Luigi and able to return to Flipside with the approval of Queen Jaydes. As the heroes prepare to head to Castle Bleck, Dimentio, O'Chunks, and Mimi decide to head off into the castle and prepare for their arrival, but not before revealing to Count Bleck that he knows his original name, Blumiere, saying that Mario's Pixl said "I must stop Blumiere...", confirming Count Bleck's suspicion that Tippi is actually his lost lover Lady Timpani.

Dimentio serves as Luigi's final boss in Castle Bleck, with hundreds of Dimentio clones appearing throughout the mirror halls in Chapter 8-3. He forces the Mario Bros. to play "tag" by chasing him through all seven areas of the game. After the brothers catch him, Dimentio reveals his intentions to betray Bleck and asks Mario and Luigi to join him. Tippi however tells them not to accept Dimentio's offer because he could plan something even worse than they thought (accepting his offer will instantly lead to a Game Over).

Bad Ending

Dimentio Bad Ending

If the brothers continue agreeing to Dimentio's offer, Dimentio will finally complete the deal, while Tippi (feeling betrayed) will abandon Mario and Luigi, now that they are on Dimentio's side. Upon agreeing, however, Dimentio promises to Mario and Luigi to give them enough power to defeat the Count, but, instead of that, he brainwashes them with two Floro Sprouts. Dimentio finally mocks Mario and Luigi and orders them to defeat the Count as he will create a "new world" for everyone. Then, the final scene results in a Game Over.

Good Ending

When the brothers refuse his offers, he insults Luigi's mustache (or in the case of the PAL version, calls the latter a "pushover"), leading to a one-on-one clash between the two. When Luigi defeats Dimentio, the twisted jester acknowledges his power and pretends to blow them both up in a magical explosion, knocking Luigi unconscious to keep "the man in green" out of Bleck's "velvet-lined gloves".

However, Luigi survives (as does Dimentio) and the former returns to Mario just in time to face Count Bleck. After Mario and his party defeat Count Bleck, Dimentio appears and fires a lethal shot of energy at the Count in a final attempt to kill him, but Nastasia warns the Count. Noticing this, Dimentio “allowed” her to absorb the blast in the Count’s place with this heinous display making yet another demonstration of his pure cruelty. Dimentio also adds insult to injury by mocking her kindness, with the blast seemingly killing her. Dimentio then seizes the Chaos Heart for himself, thinking that the Pure Hearts were permanently drained of their power, and transforms himself and Luigi into Super Dimentio. He banishes Count Bleck, Nastasia, and Tippi to Dimension D.

Like the final bosses of the previous two Paper Mario games, Super Dimentio is invincible at first, but Tippi, Count Bleck, O'Chunks and Mimi are able to use the power of the Pure Hearts to negate this invincibility, much to the jester's horror. Super Dimentio has 200 HP, but Mario, Peach, and Bowser were able to defeat him. Reduced to a head, Dimentio is left shocked at how he was defeated despite having the power of the Chaos Heart, Luigi and the Dark Prognosticus at his side. Tippi though tells him that nothing is truly determined and everyone can make their own destinies adding that the only thing he will be remembered for is his failure. However, out of his own pettiness, Dimentio reveals left behind a shadow of his power to control the Chaos Heart and destroy the Multiverse. With a final "Ciao" Dimentio was killed in an explosion, leaving only Luigi and the Chaos Heart, which threatened to destroy all dimensions. Dimentio's final plan was ultimately foiled by Tippi and Count Bleck, who used the power of the Pure Hearts to destroy the Chaos Heart and the Void, in the process vanishing without a trace, possibly to a paradise dimension in their original forms.

The Dark One

In Merlon's reciting of the Light Prognosticus, he recites something along the lines of "and the dark one will use the Chaos Heart to end all worlds". While Count Bleck does attempt to accomplish this goal and is a member of the Tribe of Darkness, Dimentio is the villain worthy of the title.

Dimentio is apparently "The Dark One" mentioned in the Dark Prognosticus as opposed to Bleck. If Bleck read this in the Prognosticus, he might have intentionally enlisted Dimentio's help in order to ensure his successful suicide and destruction of the universe. However, Dimentio eventually turns on Bleck and starts trying to thwart Bleck's plans. He casually begins to help Mario along and even tries to convince the party to join him. Count Bleck wants to end all worlds in order to end his own life, whereas Dimentio wants to end all worlds in order to become king of a universe of his own creation. Their difference in motive is the reason Dimentio gives for betraying Count Bleck. However, it is also made clear that Dimentio only feigned allegiance to Count Bleck with full intent to obtain the Chaos Heart from the beginning.

In other media

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Dimentio also appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a primary grab-type spirit. His ability reduces the fighter's weight, making them nimbler, but easier to be launched. His spirit battle is on the Paper Mario stage against Meta Knight and a giant Luigi (representing Super Dimentio); the latter of which has increased attack power and can crush the player by falling on them.

Appearance

Dimentio SPM

Dimentio has the features of a jester, a clown, and a magician. He wears a court jester costume with clownish colors (purple and yellow), and has great prowess in magic tricks. Dimentio's face is also a comedy mask, which is a classical theatrical mask used in plays. Whether this is actually his real face or he keeps a mask over his real face to keep the illusion of being a harlequin is unknown.

Personality

At first, Dimentio came off as a pretty lighthearted, friendly and affable fellow who enjoyed playing around with Mario and the others as much as fighting/opposing them. However, it is also pretty apparent early on that there was much more to him than meets the eye, with him frequently talking to himself cryptically about his own ulterior motives. At first, he seemed like he may actually be sincerely helping them defeat Bleck to stop the Chaos Heart. However, it becomes more clear over time that he has an entirely self-serving angle to his contributions. Some examples of his most cruel actions being turning O'Chunks into a mindless vegetable with a Floro Sprout as well as fake-killing first Mr. L/Luigi as well as Mario and his allies. To emphasize his cruelty brainwashing Fracktail by frying his CPU, scrambling his memory and forcing Mario to fight him in self-defense. This being only one of Dimentio’s “contributions” to result in the death of another being, all of his efforts to either help them become stronger or directly assist them in collecting Pure Hearts are never altruistic.

As the game progresses, it becomes increasingly clear his intentions aren't benevolent in the slightest and that his crueler actions were purely out of his own heinousness. In addition, his lighthearted and blasé attitude while committing them were a strong hint towards his true colors, more often than not highlighting his sadism. By the game's climax, he reveals himself to be perhaps one of, if not the most egotistical, sadistic, cunning, cruel, and evil baddie Mario has ever fought. Residing in the shadows of Count Bleck's army, Dimentio carefully planned and executed his scheme to ultimately not stop the Chaos Heart, but to take control of it himself. He planned to use its destructive power and purpose to destroy all worlds and create brand new ones to control and rule over. In Count Bleck's minionship, he waited for Bleck to create the Chaos Heart and form the Void specifically so he could overthrow him later. In retrospect, he was shown to be very twisted, ruthless and diabolical in his own way as he liked to make fun of others, especially Mario and his allies, even when he was committing pain to his enemies throughout the game, which became even more apparent when he no longer had any need to pretend to be benevolent, openly dismissing and mocking Nastasia apparently sacrificing herself to save Bleck as an "adorably hopeless gesture".

Dimentio was also consistently described as manipulative, delusional, psychopathic, and insane. This was shown when Mario, Bowser and Peach destroyed Super Dimentio, and freed Luigi. In addition, Dimentio is quite spiteful and petty. After his defeat, Dimentio openly reveals he left behind a shadow of his power to keep controlling the Chaos Heart. Entirely out of spite, he enacts this cruel gesture in order to bring the destruction to all the dimensions, deciding if he could not rule any dimension, he would destroy them all instead.

Forms

Powers and Abilities

  • Durability: Dimentio survived two different, intense battles against the heroes and was only winded as well as surviving his supposed suicide bombing of Luigi after their one-on-one fight without a scratch.
  • Magic: Dimentio is a demented master of magic who shows immense magical powers although how he attained them or whether these are natural to whatever species he belongs to remains unclear. He typically controls this by clicking his left thumb and finger together which he does any
    • Flight: Dimentio can fly/float in the air using his magic. This is the only power he displays that does not require him to click his fingers (aside from fusing)
    • Flipping: Dimentio can make the air around him spin and teleport in between dimensions at will. This is shared with the other villains but his unique *spin* on it is that he warps heavily whilst doing this.
    • Cloning: Dimentio can create at least 100 clones of himself although how this occurs is unclear as it is never performed on-screen. In the game, these clones are incapable of attacking the player but visually block out anything around the player and must be hammered away to progress via a chest holding a key.
  • Star Blasts: Dimentio's signature attack where he swirled around the index finger of his left hand in the air, generating a purple and yellow star like energy ball with colors resembling his own, before firing forth. These are immensely powerful, killing Nastasia and supposedly would have killed the weakened Count Bleck had she not intervened.
  • Dimension D Transpiration: Dimentio could transport himself and his enemies into a green pixelated dimension simply by making the dimension crumble away around him. This is Dimension D, Dimentio's personal Colosseum like battleground where all battles against him are fought.
    • Power Enhancing: Dimension D made his allies 256 times more powerful than they are outside. The downside however was that it also increased the enemies' power by 256% as well.
  • Malfunction Blast: Dimentio can twirl around his finger and fire an invisible attack capable of making machines malfunction and turn into a boss as seen with Chapter 1's Fracktail. This differs from his star blasts since those are always very visible.
  • Floro Sprout Summoning: After planting a Floro Sprout within someone, Dimentio could make it sprout out of their brain by clicking his fingers which makes them completely obedient to him.
  • Forcefield Generation: Dimentio could cast transparent yellow-white force-fields around people that are impossible to break through without his magic.
    • Forcefield Detonation: Dimentio's most powerful attack where he snapped his finger once he trapped someone in his forcefield which caused massive explosions within, quickly causing the forcefield to collapse. This was strong enough to send Mario and Bowser into the Underwhere and Princess Peach into the Overthere.
  • Invisibility: Dimentio could turn himself invisible at will.
  • Mirror Projection: Dimentio could project copies of himself into the mirrors of a particular room which was seen in 8-1 (Bleck's Castle). These differ from the clones that hid the environment since these clones cannot be attacked and fight back.
    • Star Projectiles: Dimentio's mirror clones could fire Dimentio's star blasts like him but, since there are more than one of them, they are much harder to avoid.
  • Illusion Creation: As seen from his first battle against Luigi onwards, Dimentio could generate versions of himself in mid-air that fire his star blasts. However, in spite of the very real attacks, only one is real and the player will go right through the fake ones, revealing them as illusions.
  • Fusion: Dimentio could fuse himself with beings by entering through the mouth which he did with Super Dimentio. He would then arise as the primary conscience but this would become his body and he would die with it if it was destroyed.

Powers and Abilities

  • Invulnerability: Super Dimentio initially had a yellow forcefield around himself that nullifies all damage of him to zero.
  • Jester Platform Creation: In an odd spin on his normal Dimension D, Dimentio can create at least a dozen floating platforms with massive grins resembling his own which only exist as gameplay elements to help destroy him.
    • Bullets: Periodically, Dimentio's platforms will fire black and white energy bullets from their mouths, the appearance of which are indicated by a targeting reticle which will target the hero selected, giving them time to avoid it.
  • Finishing Attack: Super Dimentio's supposed strongest attack where he kills all five heroes for good with one attack. However, we are never shown this attack because the Pure Hearts arrive and destroy his forcefield.
  • The Void: Super Dimentio's mere existence was able to fill The Void to consume three entire dimensions moments after he came into existence (the Land of the Cragnons, Flopside, and Yold Town. Although Sammer's Kingdom was consumed before this, it had nothing to do with this form).
  • Super Jump: After his head has taken sufficient damage, Super Dimentio will jump and attempt to crush the hero which is indicated by the same targeting retractile as the bullets but with an exclamation point in the center. This was probably included to prevent the player from killing him in thirty seconds.
  • Flight: Super Dimentio will occasionally retract all of his limbs and fly around the bottom of the arena
  • Clone Summoning: If the hero guards Super Dimentio's attacks, he will respond by releasing multiple tiny 8-bit Luigis, similar to the Pal Pill ability, that target the position the player was in when they were released
  • Shadow Creation: As his final act of villainy, Dimentio left a "shadow of his power" within the Chaos Heart to destroy everything as his final hurrah although this was swiftly undone.

Trivia

  • His own name is a portmanteau of the words "dimension" and "dementia". In Japan, his name is a portmanteau of "dimension" and "kamen", the Japanese word for "mask."
  • Dimentio plays a similar role to Beldam from The Thousand Year Door, both are magicians working for a major villain and are thought to be a minor villain. However at the end of the game, it's revealed that they were the true masterminds behind the events of both games and secretly plotted behind their leaders.
  • Dimentio is one of the Mario villains to possess a major character, (in his case, Luigi) with the others being Cackletta, the Shadow Queen and Cursa.
  • Mysteriously, Tippi seems to have known Dimentio before the events of Super Paper Mario. She recognizes him immediately on their first encounter in the game, during the dialogue shortly before Mario battles Fracktail. However, the game never touches on this again, leaving the player to only speculate as to the meaning of it all.
    • Interestingly enough, Tippi is never around when battling Dimentio in his standard form. The first time, Tippi is currently held captive in Fort Francis, and the second time, Luigi fights him (without any Pixels). In fact, the only time he can be tattled before his transformation into Super Dimentio is in Castle Bleck, when Dimentio appears in the mirrors to attack Mario and Luigi.
  • In Flopside, if one listens to the bartender Carson's stories, there is one about Dimentio that seems to hint at him possibly being the one who wrote the Dark Prognosticus, for the fact that his role was mentioned in the book sounds suspicious. The exact text that he says reads: "So Count Bleck has four minions, as you know. Sounds fishy to me!"
  • Instead of walking, Dimentio was seen floating or standing, as opposed to the other minions and even Count Bleck even though he does not appear to have legs.
    • However, there is an unused animation for Dimentio, which depicts him walking. It was presumably left out of the final game either because he doesn't have legs or because there would be no point where they could use that since he always teleported out of rooms and walking on the ground would create the plothole of why the Four Heroes don't immediately take him down before a battle. A GIF of his cut walking animation can be found here.
  • Other unused content include:
    • Bigger Dimension D blocks that O'Chunks throws at the player during the O'Cabbage fight. Data of it can be found here.
    • Also, while his tattle for his first two fights is in his "Powers and Abilities" section, it cannot be seen in game due to Tippi being absent both times as written here.
  • There has also been some very light speculation as to whether Dimentio was from the Tribe of Darkness, or further, the leader; this would mean that he could also be Count Bleck's Father. This is supported by the fact that Tippi somehow recognized him despite having apparently just met at the end of Chapter 1 (she met Blumiere's father at least once when she was sent away but didn't remember why and thus suggests it was a residual memory like the ones she had between chapters) as well as the fact that we don't actually know anything about Dimentio before he approached Bleck. It would also explain why Dimentio knew about Count Bleck's real identity (which is never given an in-game explanation since he just comes out with it at random in the Chapter 6 interlude) and how he knew about and studied the Dark Prognosticus.
    • However, after what Blumiere's father did to Timpani, Count Bleck likely killed him when he destroyed their home-world. Plus, if Dimentio really is Blumiere's father, it is extremely unlikely that Count Bleck would recruit him. As well as that, in the flashbacks, Blumiere's Father speaks in a rather thoughtful and serious way, much unlike Dimentio, who jokes around a lot. Furthermore, Dimentio seems to be a lot younger than Blumiere. As for knowing who Bleck was, he could have logicked a guess based on the little that he would have known about Bleck's past as a minion or simply confronted him with the name as a test or because he was just seeing how much he could make him suffer.
      • Others have noted that, in regard to the rebuttal that Count Bleck would recognize and reject him at best, that Dimentio is always masked. Additionally, given that Count Bleck's father is clearly a skilled magician since he sent away Tippi and may have survived and changed his voice.
  • Dimentio was the only one of Count Bleck's minions to fight Luigi.
  • Much like the final bosses of the previous two Paper Mario series (including Count Bleck), Dimentio starts out invincible until the items are used to take away his invincibility though. However, unlike Bowser and the Shadow Queen, his theme song doesn't change afterwards.
  • Dimentio is one of the few bosses in Super Paper Mario who is actually killed off upon being defeated along with Fracktail and Bonechill and cannot be found anywhere in the epilogue.
  • Like Fawful from the Mario and Luigi series, Dimentio always smiles, except for when you beat him in a battle or when you jump on him (in which case he frowns).
    • Dimentio and Fawful also die a similar way, being reduced to a head, pulling a final trick while smiling, and exploding in an attempt at killing the heroes, although Fawful's final attack (which was his self-destruct that inadvertently drove Mario and Luigi out of Bowser) was far less of a threat than Dimentio's.
    • Furthermore, they tend to use similes throughout their respective games.
  • It’s implied by Carson that Dimentio was the mysterious being who wrote the Dark Prognosticus, making him widely responsible for the events of the entire game, including the corruption of Blumiere into Count Bleck.
  • He is the only member of Count Bleck’s Gang to have confirmed to have died, as the other members redeemed themselves.
  • Out of every member in Count Bleck’s force, the fact that he is likely older than the count would make him the oldest. Especially given his significantly ancient and malevolent background, it is also possible he has some familiarity with Shadoo.
