Bowyer is a major antagonist in the 1996 role-playing video game Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its 2023 remake. He is a high ranking lieutenant within the Smithy Gang who works under command from its leader, Smithy.

Biography

Whilst looking for the second star, Mario and Mallow find Rose Town: a normally peaceful village, under fire from a distant threat. Pointy projectiles called Aeros: Arrow-like monsters that paralyse their victims on contact, appear to be the most immediate trace of the attacker. The next morning, after Mario regains consciousness, he and Mallow follow a mysterious character called Geno, who is actually a doll possessed by a star, into the Foest Maze.

Eventually, Mario and Mallow come across the attacker: none other than Bowyer, who is shown on-screen for the first time. Geno appears shortly after an Aero minion retrieves the Star, being the first to confront Bowyer and immediately prepares to fight him along with his Aero minions on his own. With Bowyer’s excessively violent fury beginning to overwhelm Geno, Mario and Mallow eventually step in to help him and the trio defeat the deranged creature.

Later, Mario, Mallow, Geno, Bowser, and Princess Peach encountered several mass-produced Bowyer copies in Smithy's factory. Bowyer also appeared in the parade during the credits, where he is hit by Smithy with a hammer for his failures.

The remake adds a bit more to his fight to introduce the "Triple Move" function, where upon running low on health Bowyer decides to cheat and freeze all three buttons. Geno, Mario and Mallow decide to team up to take him down at once. Bowyer attempts to do the same, only to realize he doesn't have any allies to perform it. After the Triple Move is used against him, he collapses in a heap.

Appearance

Bowyer resembled a giant bow with legs and eyes. He has spiky red hair, wears white gloves and shoes and has a red and yellow body. In-game he has blue eyes, though his official artwork depicts him with red eyes.

Personality

Bowyer is a psychotic and violent cybernetic creature who has a hyperactive and upbeat personality with a penchant for destruction. He also appears to be deranged, with him saying his signature laugh, "Nya ha ha!" frequently. Bowyer also appears to lack patience based on his irritated reaction towards his Aero minions when they present him the Star Piece, merely for “disrupting” him. In addition to his short temper, Bowyer is shown to be quite sadistic, as he shows clear joy from terrorizing Rose Town and the citizens.

Powers and abilities

Button freezing: Bowyer shows the ability to freeze action command buttons and render them unavailable for use to the player. Although he normally only locks one, in the remake he locks all 3 as a scripted last ditch effort in his battle, only for the heroes to use their first Triple Move against him.
- Move disabling: As a result of the button freezing, Bowyer could render the player incapable of either fighting normally, using items, or casting magic.
Lightning blasts: Bowyer could summon blue lightning from the sky to blast his enemies.
Arrow blasts: Bowyer's signature attack where he grabs his Aero minions and string them into his body to shoot them like arrows at his opponents.
