Chew

Chew (チュウ Chū) is a major antagonist during the Arlong Park arc of One Piece. He is one of the three pirate officers (along Hatchan and Kuroobi) of the Arlong Pirates, who works for Arlong with the purpose of dominating the human race.

He was voiced by Masaya Onosaka in Japanese, Tom Wayland in the 4Kids dub, and Jay Hickman in the Funimation dub.

Biography

Chew's early life saw him bonding with Hatchan, Arlong, and Kuroobi while they admired the Sabaody Ferris Wheel. Later, when the Sun Pirates were formed by Fisher Tiger and became embroiled in battles with the Marines, Chew joined their ranks along with other Arlong Pirates. After enduring hard-fought encounters—losing their ship and witnessing the demise of Tiger—Chew ended up under Jinbe's leadership. Although Jinbe considered joining the Seven Warlords of the Sea, the crew eventually split, and Chew followed Arlong's crew.

With the Arlong Pirates moving to East Blue, they overran Cocoyasi Village, committing brutal acts such as killing Bell-mère. Over time, Chew participated in various skirmishes, including helping suppress local resistance when Usopp, Zoro, and Johnny arrived looking for Nami. When tensions escalated, Chew became deeply involved in enforcing Arlong's rule—capturing or confronting those who defied him, such as when he dragged Usopp back to Arlong Park.

During the conflict against Luffy and his crew at Arlong Park, Chew clashed with Usopp. Their fight was marked by a series of taunts and daring attacks, with Chew initially pushing forward but eventually being outmaneuvered by Usopp's clever use of his attacks and gadgets. Despite Chew's physical assaults and even resorting to water blasts, Usopp managed to defeat him using a combination of a sake bottle and a subsequent violent counterattack. Ultimately, Chew's resistance ended when he was knocked unconscious and later arrested by the Marines.
