Rinri

Overview

Rinri (リンリ Rinri?) is a human from Land of the Lawless and the leader of the Lawless group, Kyokai.

Appearance

Rinri has a slim build and looks malnourished. He has unkempt dark hair that partially covers his forehead. His tired, heavy-lidded eyes show signs of exhaustion, with his right eye appearing infected, and his teeth are crooked. A small part of his right ear is missing, bearing the marks of an old injury, and he has an impact scar on his forehead above his right eye. He wears a loose, wrinkled button-up shirt that's partially unbuttoned, with pants that follow the same worn aesthetic. His hands are covered by gloves, and his feet are clad in a mismatched pair of battered shoes that he wears like sandals.

Personality

As the leader of Kyokai, Rinri is an incredibly cruel and ruthless man. He has no compunctions about stealing from or enslaving anyone he comes across. He is a very curious individual who wishes to learn everything he can about the new world he was transported to. In order to get the information he desires, he maintains a friendly facade in order to coax individuals into divulging vital intel and getting access to their belongings. He displayed this behavior when attempting to form an alliance with Zaybi. Rinri lied about how the Titans willingly cooperated with them to become their soldiers and how Cani had passed her responsibilities to defeat the 38th Demon Lord onto the Lawless Humans, when in actuality, the Lawless Humans forced the Titans to become their slaves by threatening a baby Titan, and they murdered Cani after she divulged key information. Once Rinri obtains all the intelligence and belongings of any foreigners he comes across, he will either have them enslaved or killed without compunction. This behavior extends to his own men, since he seemed to have zero qualms about having his soldiers, who were infected by Parasites, burned alive.

Plot

Current Arc

Rinri meets Zaybi after Gisangi and Grig bring the mage to him.[1] Zaybi hopes they can exchange information, but Rinri begins by asking if Zaybi knows what he is eating. When Zaybi admits he doesn’t, Rinri explains that it’s something called pudding, describing it as sweet and delicious. He eagerly inquires where he can find more, but Zaybi has no answer.

The mage attempts to share information about parasites - how to handle infected individuals and eliminate the parasites - but Rinri dismisses the information, revealing that his men already executed those infected. Uninterested, Rinri unexpectedly pulls a gun on Zaybi but shoots the ropes binding him instead, freeing him. To gain Zaybi's trust, Rinri lies, claiming that since the world has changed, the Lawless must adapt and embrace cooperation.

When Zaybi asks how the Lawless control titans, Rinri spins a story: his subordinates found a malnourished titan baby and offered it food and shelter. When adult titans came looking for the baby, they were grateful and agreed to help with experiments using electrodes salvaged from dead robots. In truth, they tortured the baby and blackmailed the titans into submitting to experimentation. Rinri then demonstrates a Soul Container, stealing a soul from a small rodent. The container transforms into a gun, which he claims is as powerful as an anti-materiel rifle despite its small size. When Zaybi comments on Rinri's apparent expertise, Rinri explains that his group has conducted experiments, consulted the right people, and that he himself is naturally curious.

Rinri then asks about the Sword of Courage, mentioning that they've tried running electricity through it and feeding it blood, but it remains unresponsive. He speculates it has a hidden power. Zaybi explains that it is a holy sword usable only by heroes and reacts to the user's mental energy to emit mana. When Zaybi asks where Rinri obtained the sword, Rinri claims it was given to him by a hero named Cani. He further lies, saying that Cani entrusted the sword to his men to avenge her party and defeat the 38th Demon Lord, Roya Roach. However, Zaybi sees through the deception, knowing a hero would never hand over their mission to someone else and that the Lawless most likely tricked Cani, attacked her, and stole her sword in the process. Rinri admits to tailoring his answers to make Zaybi more agreeable.

Rinri urges unity among humans, but Zaybi refuses to condone his inhumane methods, declaring they cannot cooperate. Rinri ends the conversation and snaps his fingers, signaling his men to raise their weapons at Zaybi. In response, Zaybi produces a Cube containing a parasite, claiming he can release it with his mind alone. He explains that the parasite has been enhanced with magic, making it unstoppable. Rinri calls Zaybi's bluff, questioning if he's truly willing to sacrifice the lives of the otherworlders the Lawless are "keeping" here. Manipulating the situation further, Rinri challenges Zaybi to prove they are alike.

Zaybi hesitates, unwilling to unleash the parasite. Rinri then reveals that the Lawless have been monitoring Zaybi's allies and determined they pose no threat to Kyokai. He thanks Zaybi for the information and declares his intention to take everything the refugees have. At that moment, chaos erupts as a bear attacks the base. Taking advantage of the distraction, Zaybi casts Heavy Mist Magic: Noisy Fog, cloaking the area in dense fog. Under its cover, he escapes, leaving the Lawless frustrated. However, after the small Tyrant Bear is killed, its massive mother appears, drawing Rinri's full attention.[2]

While the Lawless struggle against the Tyrant Bear, Rinri makes his way to Kyokai's underground prison, contemplating how he needs at least fifty human souls to take down the beast. Suddenly, one of the prisoners desperately yells for him to let them out, insisting that they had only come to the church after hearing that priests were offering refuge. Without hesitation, Rinri activates Ca-G-66, mercilessly extracting their souls. Looking at the lifeless bodies, he coldly remarks that they appeared to have known what this building truly was before. He then questions why they trust in something they can't even see, especially when it won't fill their stomachs.

With his weapon now charged, Rinri steps outside to confront the Tyrant Bear. He releases the Soul Container, Ca-G-66, which transforms into a railgun-like weapon. Aiming at the beast, he declares that the bullet is loaded with fifty human souls. With immense power, the weapon fires, piercing straight through the bear's abdomen. The force of the shot not only kills the bear instantly but also demolishes several buildings behind it.

Rinri then spots Zaybi nearby and immediately orders his men to break the mage's arms and legs. However, before they can act, the bear's corpse is suddenly taken over by a parasite, mutating into a Wild Beast Wurm. Rinri commands his men to burn it, but the creature lashes out with its tendrils, killing several Lawless members and absorbing them. Rinri and Gore manage to evade the attack, but the parasite also absorbs the defeated Titan weapons, growing even stronger.[3]

Some of the remaining Lawless men attempt to flee in terror, but Rinri steals their souls with his Soul Container. He then issues a grim ultimatum: either fight the parasite or be turned into bullets.[4] As more Lawless fall, Rinri fires his railgun once again, successfully piercing the creature. However, the parasite regenerates almost instantly. Intrigued, Rinri wants to capture the beast for himself. Before he can act, the parasite suddenly lashes out and destroys his Soul Container weapon, forcing Rinri to dodge just in time.

A tendril then lunges toward Rinri, aiming to impale him, but Gore intervenes, slicing it in half with his katana. He shouts that they should abandon the church and start over. Before Rinri can reply, Gore is struck by the severed tendril and thrown aside. Just as more tendrils close in on Rinri, the human refugees, led by Zaybi, intervene. They provide backup for the Lawless, halting the attack and saving Rinri's life.

Watching the battle unfold, Rinri comments that the refugees are just dancing in a play they staged themselves. He turns to Zaybi, praising his plan to weaken the Lawless before "rescuing" them. He accuses Zaybi of playing the naïve damsel while secretly scheming against them all along. However, Zaybi denies the accusation, insisting that they truly came to help. He argues that they need Rinri's knowledge of other worlds and the creativity that comes with that.

For a moment, Rinri seems to ponder Zaybi's words, before accusing Zaybi of being crueler than he is, insisting that the mage is trying to kill them all. Zaybi is taken aback by the claim. Before he can respond, the Wild Beast Wurm releases a swarm of parasite wurms towards them. Zaybi is saved by Keila, but Rinri is unable to avoid the attack. He lies collapsed in the ruins as one of the wurms burrows into his right eye, another into his chest, and several more wriggle around him.[5]

As the Wild Beast Wurm continues absorbing more humans, it undergoes a terrifying transformation, evolving into a titanic Super Wurm. Barely alive, Rinri, lying among the wreckage, gazes up at the monstrous being towering over them all.[6]
