Grig

Grig (グリッグ Guriggu?) was a human from Land of the Lawless, and one of the senior members of The Lawless group, Kyokai. He shared his title as one of the Heretic Brothers with Gisangi.

Appearance

Grig had a round stomach and a heavy, muscular build, with a strong jaw and a round nose. His spiky hair jutted out wildly in all directions. He sported a pair of lower lip piercings, each connected to long chains that extended to the hair near his ears. Both ears also bore a couple of ring piercings.

A single black line pattern, possibly a tattoo or paint, covered the left side of his face, running from his forehead, over his eye, and continuing down his cheek, neck, and chest. He wore a sleeveless leather jacket, fingerless gloves, a belt, and pants, paired with sturdy boots featuring straps and shin guards. A demonic skull design covered his left knee, while a spiky shoulder guard protected his left shoulder.

When controlling a titan, he also wore devices resembling a VR headset and wristbands.

Personality

Grig was brash, brutal, power-hungry, and merciless. He had a penchant for violence, particularly against those he considered beneath him. For example, when he struck Gaut on the head with a whip without warning simply because he disliked Gaut's response to a question. Grig reveled in experimenting with new weapons and "toys", showing appreciation for those that were more destructive and powerful.

Though he outwardly followed his bosses' orders, Grig harbored bold ambitions of overthrowing both his boss and Gore, aiming to seize control of the Kyokai. He believed that climbing the ranks of "The Seven Evils" would be a worthy pursuit.

Plot

Current Arc

Grig rides on a truck alongside Gisangi, heading toward the newest headquarters of humanity's combined forces. During the journey, he asks their driver, Gaut, what he would do if he could use magic. Gaut replies that he would probably fly. In response, Grig suddenly strikes him on the head with his whip, calling his answer boring. Grig then talks about how he would steal magic and ensure that only he and Gisangi could use it. He fantasizes about dealing with their boss and Gore, taking over Kyokai, and claiming it as their own. Grig imagines how thrilling it would be to climb all the way up the Seven Evils — the Lawless organizations.

Soon, they arrive at their destination and prepare for battle. Grig and Gisangi equip the devices that control the titans and climb onto their backs. Grig is eager to test their new weapons as they launch an attack on humanity's combined forces. Grig revels in the power of the titans, delighted by how effortlessly they can crush humans underfoot. He reflects that if their boss didn't hold the key to their safety, he would seize control of Kyokai himself with the titans.

As they advance, Gisangi notices few young women (Heidi, Muun, Mika and Yuri) in the distance, and he gets excited. Grig, however, tells him he can "feast" after they finish the task at hand. They signal their underlings and initiate a full frontal assault on the base. However, their attack is interrupted by Zaybi, who draws their attention. Grig immediately recognizes him as the mage they have been searching for, based on Gore's description.

Grig offers Zaybi a deal: the other human survivors will be allowed to leave alive if Zaybi agrees to come with them to meet their boss. Afterward, Grig and Gisangi escort him to their base, where he is presented to their leader, Rinri. Gore praises Grig for their success, assuring him that the boss will reward them later for their efforts.[1]

As Zaybi and Rinri begin their discussion, Grig holds onto the rope binding the mage. When Rinri suddenly shoots the rope to free Zaybi, Grig warns him to be more careful, pointing out that the shot could have hit him.[2] After their negotiations fail, Rinri orders his men to aim their weapons at Zaybi. Grig and the others follow suit, raising their guns at the mage. When a Tyrant Bear cub attacks Kyokai's men, Grig takes control of one of the titans and crushes the bear beneath its foot. Enraged, Grig orders the Lawless to leave the mage, Zaybi, alone for now and to focus on crushing his allies first. However, their attention is quickly drawn to the arrival of a massive Tyrant Bear mother.[3]

As the Tyrant Bear attacks the Lawless, Grig attempts to fight back using one of the Titan weapons under his control. However, even in its powerful "drumming mode", the Titan weapon appears ineffective against the massive beast. He is joined by couple other Lawless, each wielding their own Titan weapons, as they struggle to subdue the Tyrant Bear.

Frustrated, Grig shouts, demanding to know where Gisangi has disappeared to. Gaut responds that Gisangi apparently "forgot something" and ran off toward the enemy humans. This only enrages Grig further, who snaps that this is no time for his brother to "sneak a bite". Despite their efforts, the Tyrant Bear eventually overpowers the Titan weapons, defeating them.

When Rinri finally slays the beast, its corpse is suddenly taken over by a parasite, transforming it into a Wild Beast Wurm. The monstrous creature begins absorbing the Titan weapons and many of the Lawless, including Gaut. Panicked, Gaut cries out for Grig to help him, but consumed by fear, Grig screams and tells him to stay away.[4]

After the Wild Beast Wurm terrorizes the Lawless, it soon sprouts a massive head resembling Gaut's and uses his brain as a base to gain intelligence. However, upon recognizing the head as Gaut's, Grig begins shouting at him, accusing him of being behind the chaos. He demands that Gaut come down at once, calling him a mere lackey and threatening to punish him for what he has done.

Unfazed, the parasite grabs Grig by the leg and suspends him upside-down. Overcome with fear, Grig hastily apologizes, begging Gaut to place the blame on him instead. However, the parasite ignores his pleas and begins smashing Grig's body against the ground, brutally killing him in the process.[5]

Abilities

Grig, being an ordinary human, lacks super strength or speed to overpower his enemies. However, his brutal nature as a merciless Lawless more than compensates for this. Grig has no hesitation in wielding powerful and dangerous weapons.

Miscellaneous Abilities

  • Technological Mind Control: By utilizing the robots' advanced mind control device, Grig is able to manipulate a titan entirely according to his will.[6]

Equipment

  • Mind Control Device: When attacking the survivors, Grig uses the robots' mind control devices to take control of a titan.
  • Whip: Grig seems to occasionally carry a whip.[7]
