Trivia

  • Following the decision to shut down The Crew and the removal of the actual game license from all owners' game libraries, Ubisoft's actions quickly gained widespread media coverage as it was seen as controversial. While certainly not the only online-only game around, its problems lie in the fact that about 90% of the game revolved around, and could easily be enjoyed solely through singleplayer. While it made sense for the multiplayer to have the dedicated online connection, the majority of the game could've easily been left playable with an offline mode/patch, like the many games that came before it. But instead, access was outright taken away entirely.
    • Following this controversy, a YouTuber named Ross Scott reported that he intends to file a class action lawsuit against Ubisoft, stating that "The Crew was sold under a perpetual license, not a subscription, so we were being sold a good, not a service". Ross also launched the campaign "Stop Killing Games" in an effort to have players file complaints to gain the attention of multiple governments globally to act on video game shutdowns. More specifically, requiring companies to have an end-of-life plan when they decide to drop support, so that players and license owners can be left with a functional product after support ends (usually either through an offline patch or, more rarely, through open-sourcing the server tools or code).[3][4]
  • A community under the name of "The Crew Unlimited" is working to preserve the game by emulating the game's server connection to make it playable, both through offline play as well as community servers. It is currently in Beta Phase 1.5 to a select few people, but with excellent progress.[5]
    • The team also plans on potentially reviving older versions of the game, especially pre-Wild Run, due to Wild Run not only downgrading the graphics and art style, but also completely breaking them outright.
