B2 is a unused location that can be found in the Preview and earlier versions of Shadow of the Colossus.
Description
B2 is a dry land with tall cliffs, which acted as a border to the map in 2003, back when the game world was entirely flat. The cliffs were created using something called the "parts library", a collection of different model parts that were copied and pasted in order to make the overall layout of the first seamless map.[1]
It is one of the few early land models that were made by environment artist Masanori Kajita, which according to the PS3 Data Sheets, was responsible for creating the cliffs on the northwestern side of the map during this period.[2]
Also according to the chip data of the earlier lands done by Kajita, the quadrants 'C1' and 'D0' had the same layout as B2, and were likely identical copies.
Trivia
- The only other surviving parts library cliff from this period made by Masanori Kajita is G0, which uses the same identical parts but with a different layout.
- By comparing this and G0's models with the leftover model of I7, it was found that the ground of all three were placed at the same height, despite the quadrants being in the opposite sides of the world. This corroborates with the evidence of the first seamless map being completely flat.
- This was originally thought to be the leftover remains of Worm's arena, due to its arid appearance. However, it was later discovered that this was originally an old world border before the map was properly designed and not a colossus arena.
