Rodric |
“I don't expect to be forgiven, but I must take responsibility for my mistakes.” |
Rodric (ロドリク; Rodoriku) is the Chisatsu Star in Genso Suikoden: The Woven Web of a Century.
Profile
Background
He was a member of the second army, 3rd archer group in the Telluspharma Interception War during the time of Astrid. In the world of 200 years ago, he was a commoner from Martyrion. In the days before the First Interception War, he entered the army and trained, and even though he was young, he was dispatched to Zephteros Fortress as the leader of one of the platoons of archers. Despite his coercive appearance, he is honest and self-punishing. It's easy for him to blame himself, and when he starts brooding, he tries to atone for what he's done. He is, without a doubt, a virtuous man, but he goes a bit too far.

Game
On a visit to Apiro Desert during Astrid's time, Siu Jin told the Hero about one of her comrades, Rodric, who was in Sidus Forest. After the war, there he had told some people about problems with the arrows that Seu Jin made. She told the Hero that the archer hadn't quit the army, but she couldn't understand why he was there. The Hero also wasn't sure why someone who blamed the arrows for poor results would go to the forest, so he agreed to speak with him.
When the Hero arrived in the forest, Rodric said that he believed the Hero was from the future since Astrid believed him. He decided to tell him about Seu Jin's arrows. When his squad fought the Telluspharma they didn't have satisfactory results as the arrows didn't work adequately. So he reported that he arrows were not something they could use to his superiors. Because of this Seu Jin seemed to be very troubled, but Rodric thought that he got what he deserved.
Rodric didn't know why he was telling the Hero this story, if it was because of the Hero or because he was lonely, but he told him the truth. The war had been over for a while. Once he had the time to calmly reflect on what happened, he started to feel that something was wrong. Was it really a defect with the arrows, or was it just that the archers didn't master them? So he decided to test them in the forest where no one could bother or interrupt him. As all of Seu Jin's arrows had been disposed of, he asked another arrow maker to make the same ones in secret. He felt that if he thoroughly shot the arrows he would know if they could really be used or not.
When he met the Hero, he felt that he was close to knowing the truth. He just needed to test it a little further. So he asked if the Hero could bring an archer to help him. Luceri came and the pair practiced in the forest. After some time he knew the truth. Not only himself, but if another archer also uses the arrows with making a mistake, Seu Jin's arrows were sufficiently powerful. In order to hide his errors, it seems that he trampled on an arrow maker's everything.
Luceri asked him if what he had wanted was not to misrepresent his feelings of guilt, but rather to find the confidence that he was speaking the truth. Isn't that why he had been practicing with the arrows? Rodric didn't think that he would be forgiven, but he knew he had to take responsibility for what happened. He left the forest to apologize to Seu Jin.
He apologized, but at first Seu Jin was angry. He continued and told Seu Jin that even if Seu Jin didn't forgive him, he wanted Seu Jin to continue making arrows. Seu Jin couldn't stay angry at that. Rodric explained that he wanted those arrows to be useful for the people 100 and 200 years in the future. He explained that some people helped him make up his mind about what to do.
After that, he returned to the forest. He told the Hero that he didn't have to stay there anymore, but he would probably be treated as being expelled from the army and he didn't have anywhere else to go. He felt that it wasn't bad to stay in the forest until he decided his future course.
On another visit to the forest, Rodric asked the Hero if he had met Seu Jin after training with him. He said that Seu Jin, along with the other members of the Jin Clan, were researching new techniques to prepare for the next fight with the Telluspharma in 100 years. He continued that it wasn't only the Jin Clan, and that he knew a ring maker who was frantically researching. Her name was Neisa and she had a workshop on Melisma Prairie where she was wholeheartedly devoting herself to her work. Since the next battle was still 100 years in the future he didn't think it was necessary to be in such a hurry. He furthered that perhaps if you lost someone close to you couldn't just be still and wait. He offered to plant a sapling in Melisma Prairie so the Hero could meet Neisa.
