Lost World (ロストワールド Rosuto Wārudo?) is an Action Stage that appears in Sonic Adventure, its enhanced port Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, and the 2010 remaster of the game. It is the ninth Action Stage played as Sonic and the fourth Action Stage as Knuckles. It is an underground world located inside and below the Shrine of Knuckles's race in the heart of the Mystic Ruins. As with most other Action Stages in its games, Lost World has different level designs for each character, which have three optional missions each.

Description

Lost World is an abandoned world consisting of temple passages with large water streams and inflamed traps, including protruding bars and rolling boulders.

Lost World is divided into three main parts. The first is a long, maze-like section that ends with a flooded room where Switches must be pushed to open the door. The second is a dark passage with a waterfall and boulder running segment. The third and last one is a room with Lit Panels. Sonic goes through all three, while Knuckles goes through only the third.

In the center of Lost World is a short area that has two small ponds with a stone mural of Perfect Chaos, destroying the ancient Knuckles Clan.

Story

Sonic the Hedgehog

After falling off the Egg Carrier while giving chase to Eggman, Sonic lands in the Mystic Ruins jungle, where he witnesses the temple door open in front of him. Tikal invites him to explore the heart of the temple and discover a mural depicting Perfect Chaos attacking an ancient civilization, where he then gets transported to the past.

Knuckles the Echidna

After parting ways with Sonic and Tails, Knuckles heads into the temple in the heart of the Mystic Ruins jungle after unlocking the entrance with two stone statues and finding the remaining Master Emerald shards there. After finding the shards, Knuckles is suddenly transported to the past once again.

Gameplay

Skill and timing is required to master Lost World. To make traveling in water easier, there is a Snake-like rocked version which can travel on the surface and into water. Some parts of the interior take place in a bottomless pit with some small platforms that cannot be seen without light. To light them on, a light projectiles system can produce some light in a part of these sections, which also includes mirrors that make the light reflected to light up the largest possible parts. There are also some puzzles to resolve in this part of the shrine.

Lost World features the exclusive Lit Panel gimmicks that allow the character to walk on walls. To walk on these panels, the player must connect a group of them with a nearby Switch and once they are lit, the character can walk on them.

Overview

Lost World can only be accessed in the Mystic Ruins Jungle Area, at the Shrine of Knuckles's race. In Sonic's story, Sonic can enter Lost World through the shrine's main entrance, which is designed like a serpent's mouth. This entrance opens during one of the cutscenes. In Knuckles' story, on the other hand, Knuckles enter Lost World through the back entrance on the shrine. To do this, the player has to take the gold statue and silver statue to the back of the temple and place them on matching plinths. After placing the gold and silver statues on their corresponding altars, a passage in the floor in the back of the shrine will open, which leads into Lost World.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic's version of the Action Stage has the player travel through five successive sections in Lost World. The first section has a large swimming snake, which must be used to find three switches to open a door of stone snakes. The second section is a dark room where mirrors can be used to light it up. The third section has a waterfall, which leads to a pond with stepping stones resting in the water, followed by having to escape from a giant burning boulder headed straight for Sonic. The fourth section is a giant room, which must be slowly climbed up using the Lit Panels.

Trivia

  • There is a glitch in Knuckles' version of Lost World that allows him to access and complete Sonic's entire portion of this Action Stage. The player must punch one of the blocks before the fire comes out and Knuckles will glitch through; ironically, the same music is playing throughout the rest of the stage, whereas Sonic's music is completely different.
  • This is the only stage in Sonic Adventure that only two characters can access, as opposed to three in all other stages.
  • In Knuckles' version of Lost World, "Leading Lights ...for Lost World" is played instead of "Danger! Chased by Rock ...for Lost World", which is heard when Sonic goes through the same area. "Leading Lights ...for Lost World" also appears in Sonic's version of Lost World, but only briefly in the last room where the Perfect Chaos mural is located.
  • The stone mural of Perfect Chaos shows what the designers intended him to look like. It was not shown in Sonic Adventure due to Dreamcast's technological limitations. This design was later used in Sonic Generations.
