Bugernaut

The smaller "baby" flees when the leader is smashed.

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia

The Bugernaut[1] (ブンブーン[2] Bun-bun?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, horsefly-based Badnik model created by Dr. Eggman.

Appearance

Based on the horsefly, Bugernauts have a small blue body with a pair of large superposition eyes, four big wings and a cylinder-shaped abdomen on their back.

Game appearances

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and the lock-on game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Bugernauts are found in Hydrocity Zone, and come in two sizes: a larger Bugernaut may be followed by a smaller one, but only the larger one can be destroyed. Bugernauts remain stationary above water surfaces, but will start buzzing around and charge at the playable characters when they approach them.

When the player defeats a larger Bugernaut by using a Spin Jump, the small Bugernaut becomes vulnerable and seeks out the nearest larger Bugernaut to follow it. If there are no large Bugernauts nearby, the smaller one flies away. After being destroyed, they release an Animal and award the player with 100 points.

Sonic Mania

In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, Bugernauts are enemies found in both Acts of Hydrocity Zone. In gameplay, they behave exactly like in their original appearance. Upon their destruction, they will release an Animal and award the player with 100 points.

Powers and abilities

With their wings, the Bugernauts are capable of flight.
