Beanstalk

The Beanstalk^{[note 1]} is a gimmick that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a unique type of Little Planet flower that grows into a giant carnivorous plant. Once grown, it can be used for platforming.

Description

The Beanstalk is a giant vine-like flower whose stem is a chain of numerous green spheres. Along this stem are extra large bulbs where either thick leaves spout or red flowers bloom. The aforementioned flowers in particular are bio-mechanical in appearance with red petals resembling a featureless jaw with sharp teeth. The stem also has thinner vines and small red bulbs growing in various places.

Overview

In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, Beanstalks appear exclusively in Stardust Speedway Zone Act 1. These plants only appear when the player destroys one of the local Capsules, which prompts them to scatter Little Planet flowers. Once released, the Beanstalk quickly grows to cover the surrounding area. As it grows, the player can use its leaves as platforms to reach other areas. However, the Beanstalks' red flowers will try to bite the playable characters at the same time, which will cause damage. The only way to destroy these flowers is to use Mighty's Hammer Drop, which will remove them without any damage dealt towards Mighty.

Merchandise

In 2023, a playset of Stardust Speedway Zone by Jakks Pacific is released. A Beanstalk is included as a main part of the set.
