Big Nal

The Big Nal[1] is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced variant of the Caterkiller created by Dr. Eggman.

Appearance

The Big Nal heavily resembles the standard Caterkiller Badniks. However, unlike the Caterkillers, the Big Nals have pink segments instead of purple segments, as well additional eyelashes to give them a more feminine appearance. They are also significantly larger and more bulky than the standard Caterkillers.

Overview

The Big Nals appear as enemies in all versions of Sonic Lost World. Like many of the Badniks in the game, they are brainwashed by the Deadly Six via their magnetic field manipulation after they turn on Eggman. In the Wii U/PC versions, they are encountered in Zone 1 of Sky Road, where they are featured as moving obstacles during max-speed sections or larger enemies at the single planetoid section. They attack by burrowing to the other side of the planetoid and will make shock waves when their heads hit the ground. The player has to hit their heads with multiple Focused Homing Attacks or about six Flying Kicks in order to defeat it and make a giant Spring appear to go to the next area.

In the Nintendo 3DS version, a singular Big Nal appears in Windy Hill Zone 1, where Sonic has to run from it while dodging several rock obstacles.

Powers and abilities

The Big Nals are very durable Badniks, being able to take multiple hits before they go down and can burrow underground.

Trivia

  • Like many new enemies in the different versions of Sonic Lost World, the Big Nal's name has not been listed in any official source. Instead, it is referred to as "enm_NalBig" in the game's source code.
  • According to their concept art, the Big Nal's color palette seems to be based off the coloration of the Caterkiller in their artwork from the original Sonic the Hedgehog.
