―The Director threatens Sam after launching the missiles[src]

The Director, or Director Doppler, is head of the Risk Assessment Body of Mental-Altani, and the main antagonist of Serious Sam's Bogus Detour. He serves as the game's final boss of the campaign and the only boss to be fought twice.

Biography

Not much known about the Director's past, but rumor has it that, during the Dark Wars, he left a small "surprise" (an energy ball explosion) for the troops surrounding him after he escaped using his teleport.[1]

Appearances

Serious Sam's Bogus Detour

The Director first appears on a Mental-Altani base located on the Moon, in the final level of the game, Interplanetary Ballistic. The first time he encounters Sam, he taunts him several times before fleeing deeper into the base to let his troops deal with him. After Sam overrides the base's missile guidance system to set the missiles to fire at the Mental-Altani base instead of the Earth, he finally confronts The Director in a room, and a fight ensues. Having dealt a consistent amount of damage to the Director, he teleports away, sending in some of Mental's minions to deal with the latter.[2]

Sam kills more of Mental's forces and makes his way to the launch room. Here, the Director shows himself again, revealing his true intentions; to launch the missiles at Earth and destroy it, thus changing the future of the human race forever. However, as Sam has re-calibrated the missiles, they will instead destroy the Moon base, saving humanity and giving them another chance.[2]

Before he launches the missiles, the Director sends in two war utility mechs, Tech-X and PRIME-209, in a last-ditch attempt to kill Sam. The machines prove to be capable adversaries for Sam, but he eventually destroys them, which also terminates the Director's controls that he was using to send in Orc engineers to repair the mechs.

While the Director's controls had been damaged during the mech fight, this still doesn’t prevent him from launching the missiles.[2] This initiates a countdown in the process. As the missiles are being launched, the Director fights Sam for the final time. Sam is close to finishing him off, but the Director teleports away from the Moon base to an unknown location. With just enough time to escape, Sam makes off in a spaceship that was parked nearby. What happened to the Director afterwards is unknown.

Tactics

Fight 1

  • The Director is not a very tough boss, but he fires his projectiles quickly, and can deal quite a lot of damage if they are not avoided.
  • The A-24 Devastator, Erasergun, SBC Cannon, The Shaft and XPML21 Rocket Launcher work well against him and the clone that he spawns in the second and third fights.
  • His energy balls are launched in a curving arc manner, and will home in on the player once they are fired. Avoid these projectiles by strafing or dashing in the opposite direction.

Fight 2

  • Just like before, the aforementioned weapons will very work well against the Director, especially against his clone decoy, which has far much less health than he does.
  • The player needs to lower the Director's health as quickly as possible during the fight before he teleports away. If the player isn't quick enough, they won't have enough time to escape to the hangar before the base is destroyed by the missiles.
  • He will fire more projectiles during the second fight, so evading them as much as possible is key to staying alive long enough to fight him and also helps to save valuable extra lives (that is, assuming the player didn't disable them in the single player menu).
  • When the Director's clone is active, he will be immune to damage. Kill the clone as soon as possible before fighting the Director again.
  • It can be hard to distinguish the Director from his clone during the fight. The player needs to turn their attention to the blue "hologram", as this is actually the Director. What resembles him otherwise is his clone.

Relationships

Sam Stone

The Director harbored a deep hatred for Sam. He liked to mess around with him several times and would often run away and let his troops deal with him, before he finally showed himself to confront Sam in a darkened room just to fight him before teleporting away to the Launch Command.[2]

Personality and skills

The Director has a reputation for being a ruthless, evil killer who will stop at nothing to win. He has full support from the Mental-Altani Directorate to do whatever he pleases, so long as it serves the Corporation.<ref name="Description"> He has similar characteristics to that of Mental and his servants; the Director never cared for the human race, and would rather let them all perish than show any remorse.[2] Despite these traits, he has been shown to be cowardly and passive-aggressive, and prefers to not engage in open fights, instead letting his forces deal with the enemy rather than fight them directly. He will only decide to fight if he is backed into a corner and has no other choice.[2]

Powers and abilities

  • High Hitpoints: While the Director is not as tough as the other bosses fought in the game, he still required a formidable amount of firepower to defeat him.
  • High Durability and Endurance: The Director possessed quite high endurance. He could withstand multiple rounds from rapid-firing weapons from the XM214-A Minigun, blasts from the XPML21 Rocket Launcher or SBC Cannon, or any other heavy weapon in Sam's arsenal to a certain extent.[2]

Weapons: The Director is equipped with an execution glove on his left hand, from which he forms volatile energy balls, as well as a supremacy glove on his right hand, which gives him the ability to produce a holographic clone of himself to serve as a decoy.

  • Utility Belt: The Director carries a utility belt equipped with a personal teleport, which he can use to teleport to any destination he desires, even off-world.[2]
