A Pal Pad is a key item introduced in Generation IV.
Effect

The Pal Pad allows the player to record and store other players' Friend Codes, allowing for up to 32 friends. The Pal Pad also features the player's own Friend Code and stores information about records set by them and their friends, such as battles done over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and trades.
Pal Pads have not appeared since Pokémon X and Pokémon Y onward, which is because the Nintendo 3DS and later Nintendo handhelds have Friend Codes integrated into the console itself.
