Eugene is a playable character in Dragalia Lost. He is a young man who befriended a creature he calls Sam.
History
When Eugene and Catherine were young, they were close friends. But when they grew up they went to different schools and drifted apart.
Eugene first appears alongside Sam in the Rhythmic Resolutions event. He attempts to hide from the festivities but is found by Catherine. When she finds out Eugene has been feeding Sam nothing but nougat, she and Eugene argue, with them simultaneously declaring their hatred for each other.
After Catherine leaves, Sam escapes and finds her. She has a servant feed him some food, but he disappears. They and the Halidom find Sam, but discover he is not only purple, but he speaks, and rather rudely. Not only that, but the new Sam, named Styx, multiplies and reeks havoc on the townspeople. After finding a restaurant and talking to the Styx hostess, Mym remembers the word not supposed to be said in front of a Styx, "hate". Eugene and Catherine shake hands and make up, but the hostess tells them that as long as remnants of hatred still remain, so too will the Styxes.
As they escape, they encounter an enka singer known as the Marvelous Naoto, who proposes a bon dance. The two dance and declare why they hated each other, passing out in the process. When they wake up, they find the Styxes combine into one, the dragon Styx, but Sam loses her memories of being Sam. At the end, Eugene helps Catherine clean up the festival. As a sun shower arrives, Eugene and Catherine see Sam reappear, and ask if they're getting along.
Eugene also appears in several Castle Stories. In The Midnight Escape, he and his friends Hope, Nicolas, and Jurota attempt to escape the Halidom at night to sneak out to the city Ranzal mentioned visiting. After Jurota leaves to duel night-guard Aoi and Nicolas leaves to trap the meat-hungry Yue with magic, Eugene and Hope encounter Celliera getting in some night training. They split up so at least one of them can get to the gate, but Eugene is caught by Celliera and forced to train. Meanwhile, Hope is caught at the gate by Ranzal, who has sends him back to his room. The next day, Ranzal tells him that when they get more experience under their belts, he'll take them to the city personally.
In Valentine's Two-of-a-Kind, Eugene attends the Valentine's party hosted by Catherine to thank her with a gift. After bumping into Addis, he is found by Catherine, who chastises him for wanting to leave. Addis advises him to "throw down the gauntlet" and tell her how he feels. Eugene approaches Catherine, but the two argue again. As Catherine leaves, Eugene announces he's throwing down the gauntlet and gives her the present, limited-edition Valentine's Day nougat. In response, she gives him her own Valentine's Day present. The two then awkwardly say goodbye.
Personality
Eugene is a shy person and a self-described introvert.[1] He is not a fan of social settings, preferring to stay somewhere where there are less people. He is also not shown to have the greatest diet, feeding Sam a daily meal of nougat.[2]
Eugene and Catherine are shown to have a close but argumentative friendship. They were friends when they were young, but after going to different schools they drifted apart.[3] In Saiga's Adventurer Stories he compares Eugene and Catherine to himself and his late wife Momoyo.[4]
Official Description
A dour, contrary young man. He talks a big game in his insistence he doesn't need friends, but this stems from his loneliness. In reality, he's a ball of nerves who doesn't want to talk, and yet in reality he yearns to change.
