In Donkey Kong series
Donkey Kong
Mario made his debut in Donkey Kong and was originally called Mr. Video and Jumpman. As a playable character, Mario must avoid touching the barrels and collect items. He can jump over obstacles such as the barrels Donkey Kong throws, or Mario can use hammers to destroy the barrels and defeat other enemies.
In Mario Bros. series
Mario Bros. (arcade)
Mario is controlled by player one, while his brother, Luigi, is player two's character and portrayed as a green palette swap of Mario.
Mario is now a plumber in the sewers of New York (his house, according to Atari) and fights an endless number of creatures, such as Shellcreepers and Sidesteppers. Unlike in later games, Mario cannot jump on enemies. Instead, he must jump at a floor from below to stun all enemies walking onto where he he it. When Mario approaches the stunned enemies, he kicks them out of the screen, rendering them defeated.
Mario Clash
Mario is the only playable character. He has to defeat various enemies using Turtle Shells along the way.
In Super Mario series
Super Mario Bros.

Mario and Luigi go on a journey to save the Mushroom Kingdom after it had been taken over by Bowser and his forces, the Koopa Troop. They make their way through eight worlds, each having a castle level at the end. The boss of the first seven worlds is a False Bowser, but after each time Mario or Luigi defeats a False Bowser, he is greeted by a Mushroom Retainer, who tells them that Peach is in a different castle. It was not until World 8 that Mario or Luigi would enter Bowser's Castle, for World 8-4. After navigating the mazes and traps, the brothers defeated Bowser and rescued Princess Peach.
As for his abilities, Mario can dash, jump, crouch, and swim. He can also enter inside of Warp Pipes. There are various ways that Mario can defeat enemies, such as by stomping, hitting a Koopa Shell, using a fireball from a Fire Flower, or from a Starman, but the method can change depending on the enemy. In two-player mode, Mario is always controlled by the first player, like in Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels
Mario returns as a playable character, having mostly the same role as in Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 2

One evening, Mario had a dream about ascending a staircase to a door. The door opened and he looked out upon the land of dreams, Subcon. A faint voice informed him that the tyrant Wart and the 8 bits had taken control over the land. A bolt of lightning then flashes in front of Mario, who then fell and woke up in his bed. Mario could not clear his head of the dream, so he decided to talk to Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad about it. As Mario and the other three characters go on a picnic, they discover a cave on a mountain nearby, inside of which is a staircase like the one in Mario's dream. The four characters climb up to find a door just like the one in Mario's dream.
On their adventure, Mario is one of four playable characters, other than Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad. Mario replaces Imajin from Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic. He has balanced statistics, and he is the second strongest, second fastest, and second highest jumper. Unlike the previous game, Mario can now pick up enemies and certain objects such as Vegetables or Mushroom Blocks. Mario and the others travel through seven worlds before fighting Wart at the end of his castle at World 7-2.
In the ending, Mario and the other protagonists free Subcon, and a celebration is held in honor of the four heroes. It is soon revealed that the events of the game were all a dream from Mario, who wakes up for a few seconds before returning to sleep.
Super Mario Bros. 3

Mario and Luigi go on their next adventure to save the Mushroom World at large, since the seven Koopalings have each taken over a different land, stealing a Magic Wand from a King to turn them into a different creature altogether. Mario and Luigi have eight worlds to travel through, like before. However, when they reach the castle at the end of the first seven worlds, Mario or Luigi then go to board its airship to battle the Koopaling waiting for them at the end. After defeating the Koopaling, Mario or Luigi takes back the Magic Wand and returns to the castle to give it to its King.
Mario's basic moves are the same as in Super Mario Bros., and he is once again exclusive to the first player in two-player mode. Mario can now use the Tanooki Suit, Super Leaf, Frog Suit, and Hammer Suit power-up items to become Tanooki Mario, Raccoon Mario, Frog Mario, or Hammer Mario, respectively.
After completing the seventh world, Pipe Land, Mario and Luigi receive a letter from Bowser, informing them that he kidnapped the princess and had taken her to Bowser's Castle in the eighth and final world, Dark Land. Mario or Luigi are first met by Bowser's expansive military, complete with tanks, airships, and lava-resistant ships. After passing them, Mario or Luigi lastly fight Bowser at the end of his castle, defeating him and rescuing Peach, who jokingly said that the princess was in another castle.
Super Mario Land

Mario travels to Sarasaland to rescue the land's princess, Daisy, from the alien Tatanga. Mario's powers in the game are limited to Superball Mario, in which he can shoot balls that ricochet off walls, as well as the Marine Pop (a submarine) and the Sky Pop (an airplane), each in a special auto-scrolling stage. When he rescues Princess Daisy, the two fly off in a spaceship.
Super Mario World

Both Mario and Luigi return as the two main protagonists. This is the debut of Mario's recurring sidekick Yoshi, whom he met on a holiday in Dinosaur Land, where Bowser kidnaps Toadstool again, forcing Mario and Luigi to rescue her once again.
Mario receives the Spin Jump ability, although he cannot use it while in his Small form. With his Spin Jump, Mario can destroy Rotating Blocks from above, jump off of Yoshi's back, or even to avoid certain obstacles or defeat enemies. Mario can use a Cape Feather to turn into Caped Mario, allowing him to take off from the ground and glide in the air. There are also Grab Blocks that Mario can pick up and throw at enemies.
Mario and Luigi defeat the Koopalings in their castles, rescue the captured eggs, and defeat Bowser in the Valley of Bowser, rescuing Toadstool and taking her home to Yoshi's Island, where they continue their vacation.
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

Mario is the sole playable character, like in Super Mario Land. This is the debut of Mario's arch-rival Wario, who usurps Mario's Castle while Mario rescues Princess Daisy in Sarasaland during the events of Super Mario Land. As such, Mario goes on a journey to reclaim his castle.
Just as before, Mario can use the Super Mushroom and Fire Flower, although the latter replaces the Superball Flower from Super Mario Land. However, Fire Mario does have a slightly different appearance than before, with Mario now wearing a small feather on his cap, but this was not retained in future installments. There is an entirely new power-up item named the Carrot, which transforms Mario into Bunny Mario, allowing him to slow his descent or hover. Mario encounters several enemies and bosses by traveling through zones rather than worlds. When he finally reaches Wario, Wario attempts to use power-ups transforming him into Fire Wario and Bunny Wario, but Mario eventually prevails and regains his castle.
Super Mario 64

This is Mario's first appearance in a three-dimensional game. He is the only playable character. Much of the game takes place in Princess Peach's Castle, where Mario has to access worlds through several paintings and recover the stolen Power Stars while going on a journey to rescue Princess Peach.
Mario can perform new abilities. He can also perform a triple jump, wall jump, long jump, side somersault and backward somersault. Mario can pick up and swing enemies and bosses. Additionally, Mario can also punch, kick, and jump kick. Mario can slide attack, slide kick, ground-pound, body slam, and trip enemies. However, Mario will lose lives when falling from extreme heights.
Super Mario Sunshine

Mario, Peach, and Toadsworth travel to the tropical island of Isle Delfino to have a vacation. However, upon arriving on the Delfino Airstrip, they notice some type of goop is covering half the area. Mario, responding to Toadsworth's request for help, discovers F.L.U.D.D. and, with his help, destroys the Polluted Piranha Plant, cleaning the airstrip. Soon after, however, the police arrests Mario and takes him to a jail on the main island.

Mario is then placed on trial against the citizens of Isle Delfino. During the trial, the prosecutor explains that Isle Delfino is covered in goop by an unknown entity, though descriptions from various anonymous eyewitnesses have suggested that Mario has vandalized Isle Delfino. Peach and Toadsworth try objecting against the prosecution, but the judge overrules the objection quickly, sentencing Mario to clean the island of the goop as community service before leaving, while returning the island's power by collecting Shine Sprites, the island's source of sunlight.
Most of Mario's jumping, punching, and kicking abilities from Super Mario 64 are removed in favor of F.L.U.D.D.'s powers. Mario can spray water at enemies and clear goop; the Expansion Nozzles for F.L.U.D.D. can make Mario hover in the air for a short while, make him run at a turbo speed, or rocket him high in the air, although Mario can hold only one Expansion Nozzle at a time. Water for F.L.U.D.D. can be refilled at any body of water in the game or with Water Bottles. Mario can also ride Yoshis. In the secret levels of the game, Shadow Mario takes F.L.U.D.D. away from Mario, leaving him with only his basic jumping abilities and the Ground Pound to beat the stage. When Mario loses his cap in Super Mario Sunshine, he takes damage from the sun.
Shadow Mario soon captures Peach, taking her to Pinna Island. From there, Mario uses a cannon in Delfino Plaza to come after her and, after chasing Shadow Mario through the island's theme park, arrives at a lake where Shadow Mario unveils Mecha-Bowser, a huge Bowser-like robot. However, Mario defeats the robot by using water rockets. It is here that Shadow Mario reveals himself to be Bowser Jr., Bowser's child. Bowser Jr. then reveals that he had taken Peach because Bowser has told him that Peach is his mother (though Bowser later admits this was a lie meant to get Bowser Jr. to kidnap Peach) and that she is "kidnapped by a bad man named Mario..." Mario, Peach, and F.L.U.D.D. also learn that Bowser Jr. has planted the graffiti so Mario can be sent to prison, but it fails. Bowser Jr. then escapes, and he and Peach fly to Corona Mountain.
Mario later arrives at the top of the mountain, where Peach, Bowser, and Bowser Jr. are sitting in a hot tub. The interruption enrages Bowser, leading him to fight Mario—but despite having help from Bowser Jr., who is firing Bullet Bills from his raft, Mario still manages to ground-pound all five sections of the hot tub, causing it to flip, sending Mario, Peach, Bowser, and Bowser Jr. falling to the ground. Mario and Peach land on an islet west of Delfino Plaza, where Mario also finds F.L.U.D.D. lying on the ground, highly damaged from the fall and stress of the battle. F.L.U.D.D. then asks if he had truly assisted Mario before shutting off. The two then watch as the final Shine Sprite falls to the Shine Gate, restoring light to the island.

Mario and Peach are then seen at Sirena Beach, Mario still sad about his loss of F.L.U.D.D. Both then turn around to see the Toads that came with them to the island, one holding F.L.U.D.D., who is now fixed and says, "The vacation starts now!"
Super Mario 64 DS
Mario's role is altered from the original Super Mario 64. He has been trapped by Goomboss, and Yoshi is the only character who can rescue him. In addition, Mario is required to unlock Luigi, who has been trapped by King Boo. Mario is the most balanced of the four characters and plays similarly as in the original Super Mario 64.

New Super Mario Bros.

The game marks Mario's first appearance in 2.5D side-scrolling platforming title, as well as Luigi's. The player can now choose to play as either Mario or Luigi, not unlike Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels.
In the opening, Mario and Peach are going on a stroll near Princess Peach's Castle. When lightning strikes the castle unexpectedly, Mario rushes to investigate. While Mario is off-guard, Bowser Jr. sneaks up behind Peach and captures her, so Mario chases Bowser Jr. and tries rescuing her.
Mario's journey takes place through eight worlds. He can use the Super Mushroom and Fire Flower as usual. There are a few more power-up items that he can use on his journey for the first time, including the Mini Mushroom to shrink to miniature size, the Mega Mushroom to become gigantic, and the Blue Shell to wear a blue Koopa Shell and perform a Shell Dash.
Mario encounters Bowser a few different times. The first time is a traditional fight against Bowser at the end of World 1, in the World 1-Castle. Bowser drops into the lava upon being defeated, this time becoming his skeletal form, Dry Bowser. Mario fights Dry Bowser much later on, in World 8-Castle, and lastly both Bowser and Bowser Jr. together in the final level, World 8-Bowser's Castle, after being resurrected by the latter. Upon defeating both of them, Mario reunites with Peach, who gives him a kiss for his efforts.
Super Mario Galaxy

In the opening, Mario is invited to the Star Festival by Peach, who has something to give to him. However, Bowser interrupts the event when he abducts Peach. Mario tries to stop Bowser, only to get blasted by Kamek and sent flying off. When later recovering in the Gateway Galaxy, Mario is asked by Rosalina to rescue the Power Stars and Grand Stars to power her Comet Observatory, which can help take them to Bowser and Peach. Mario is given the Baby Luma, who accompanies him and allows him to star-spin.
Most of the jumping mechanics present in Super Mario 64, such as Long Jumps, somersaults, and Triple Jumps, return. The Star Spin replaces Mario's punch/kick/slide offensive moves in Super Mario 64. The Wii pointer can be used to shoot enemies or grab Star Bits without controlling Mario. Additionally, Mario can get assistance by another player in Co-Star Mode, who can help gather Star Bits, shoot Star Bits, stun enemies, and help him jump. Lastly, Mario can find new sets of temporary power-ups that aid him in completing levels, such as the Bee Mushroom, Ice Flower, Red Star, Rainbow Star, and Fire Flower.
A similar looking character named Cosmic Mario appears. He has the same body structure as Mario, but lacks eyes and his coloration is dark blue with stars, resembling the night sky.
Throughout his adventure, Mario also receives letters from Peach, who sends him 1-Up Mushrooms. Eventually, following several encounters with Bowser, Mario defeats him in Bowser's Galaxy Reactor. When Mario rides on the final Grand Star, Bowser's star explodes and creates a Black Hole. Baby Luma shocks Mario by throwing himself into the black hole to prevent Bowser's black hole from consuming everything around it, including Mario, Princess Peach, and the castle. After a big explosion, Mario reappears in an unknown location in front of a large floating Rosalina. Rosalina reassures him that this explosion is just the mark of a new universe. Mario then awakens in a restored world, near Peach's Castle. He also sees Bowser and Princess Peach awaken intact. He takes time adjusting to this new world around him before happily embracing it. During a special cutscene after Mario has collected 120 Stars, Rosalina thanks him before leaving in her Comet Observatory.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii

The game opens with Mario and his friends Luigi, Yellow Toad, and Blue Toad celebrating Peach's birthday at her castle. A suspicious large cake arrives in the castle, and as the characters take a look, Bowser Jr. and the seven Koopalings emerge from it, trap Peach within, and ride off in the airship. The four protagonists give chase, battling each Koopaling in the tower and then castle of the first seven worlds.
After a long journey, Mario and his friends finally make it to Bowser's Castle, at the end of World 8, and fight Bowser. Mario manages to activate the ! Switch. The victory is short-lived, as the Peach in the cage hanging from the ceiling is actually Kamek in disguise, and Mario soon has to battle a gigantic Bowser, who has become significantly larger from Kamek's magic. Mario has to make his way through the rest of the level avoiding Giant Bowser's fireballs and large waves of lava. Eventually, Mario reaches the real Peach and activates a Large ! Switch, defeating Bowser completely.
In the ending, when Mario exits the castle, with Peach at his side, they are met by Luigi, who is in a hot air balloon, with Blue Toad and Yellow Toad in another one behind him. Luigi offers Mario and Peach his balloon, only to fall over as Mario and Peach take off in the balloon. Mario's journey is not over, as Peach informs him about the secret world, World 9.
Super Mario Galaxy 2

Mario returns as the main protagonist. In the opening, Mario discovers Baby Luma. While pursuing Bowser, who has kidnapped Peach again, Mario enlists Lubba's help and pilots the Starship Mario, a spaceship designed in the likeness of Mario's head. Aside from additional power-ups and the addition of Yoshi, Mario plays very similarly as in Super Mario Galaxy.
After finding a Power Star in the first galaxy, Mario finds a small planetoid that a group of Lumas, led by Lubba, is using to travel around. Lubba then explains that earlier, Bowser found them, took their Star power, and left the ship in disrepair. The crew of Lumas then uses its power to transform the ship, giving it the appearance of Mario's head, and it is named Starship Mario. Being named the captain, Mario flies off to collect Power Stars in order to reach Bowser and Princess Peach.
Mario defeats Bowser and saves Peach in the end. Rosalina and her Comet Observatory appear before Mario and Peach. Rosalina thanks Mario for watching over the Luma that he has found, and the Baby Luma returns to the Comet Observatory, along with Mario's cap. Mario and his companions return to the Mushroom Kingdom.
The Cosmic Mario lookalikes from Super Mario Galaxy are replaced by Cosmic Clones. Like Cosmic Mario, they strongly resemble Mario, but are colored black with a brown outline and have wide, yellow eyes. They follow Mario around and copy his every move, including his death animation.
Super Mario 3D Land

In the opening, following a storm, all of the Super Leaves are blown from the Tail Tree outside Peach's Castle. The following day, Mario and three Toads investigate the scene when they notice a floating letter. They open it to discover that Bowser kidnapped Peach while she was checking the damage to the tree. Mario and the Toads then run to rescue her, marking the start of the former's journey.
Mario's adventure is a throwback to the classic 2D Super Mario series, but done in a three-dimensional environment. He uses several classic power-ups, notably the Tanooki Suit from Super Mario Bros. 3. Unlike in older games, Mario default form is his Super form, so whenever Mario loses a life, he restarts in this form rather than his Small form. Mario's new abilities include rolling, which can break blocks if he is in Super form. He also has a few of his jumps from the 3D Super Mario games, such as the Long Jump, the Crouch Jump, and the Side Somersault. If Mario loses five lives, he can use an Invincibility Leaf, which will transform him into White Tanooki Mario, a white version of Tanooki Mario with permanent invincibility. If Mario loses ten lives, he can also use a P-Wing, which allows him to fly all the way to the Goal Pole.
While running through the worlds, Mario receives letters from Peach to learn about her situation. Eventually, Mario reaches Bowser's Castle, set in the level World 8-Bowser: Part 1, where he fights Bowser at the end. Similarly to Super Mario Bros., Mario activates the switch on the other side of the bridge and sends Bowser into the lava. Mario enters a door and finds Peach, only to discover that it is a wooden cutout. Bowser then emerges, carrying the real princess, and flees to his second castle.
After heading through another level, Mario reaches Bowser's second castle, where Peach is tied to a Goal Pole. Bowser then appears and the two begin their battle. This time, Mario has to navigate an obstacle course to get to the bridge and eventually the switch at the end. He pushes the switch, sending Bowser to fall into the lava below. However, Bowser then quickly emerges from the lava, and Mario has to activate another switch to send Bowser into the lava below, defeating him properly. Mario then returns to the Goal Pole and frees Peach. Mario, along with three Toads, then uses a Super Leaf to get himself and Peach back home.
Some time later, Mario receives another letter, this time from Luigi. Learning that his brother has been taken hostage by Dry Bowser, Mario runs through Special 1 and rescues Luigi. Following this, Peach is abducted by Bowser once more. Mario, with Luigi’s help, goes back to his castle and defeats him once more. Once Mario gets five stars in his profile, the level Special 8-Crown is unlocked. There, he goes through an obstacle course where Boom Boom and Pom Pom are fought for the last time. This time, Boom Boom has a track of flames. When they are defeated, a giant "THANK YOU" appears while Toads surround the final Goal Pole of the game.
New Super Mario Bros. 2

Mario once again returns as the main protagonist. In this game, Gold Mario, received from a Gold Flower, is Mario's newest power-up, owing to the gold and coin-collecting theme of the game. In his Gold form, Mario can throw golden fireballs, which transform blocks into coins for him to collect. Another form of his introduced is White Raccoon Mario, which is obtainable from an Invincibility Leaf from an Assist Block. The form gives Mario the power of invincibility and all of the abilities of Raccoon Mario, which also returns, but not Tanooki Mario.
In the opening, Mario and Luigi are visiting Princess Peach and leave her castle in Racoon form, with the princess waving them off, to collect coins in the sky. As soon as they land, the Koopalings appear in the Koopa Clown Car and slam into the ground, causing the brothers to lose their raccoon powers. The Koopalings reveal that they have taken Princess Peach once again, and the Mario Bros. give chase. As they travel through the six worlds, the brothers must find secret worlds, battle Reznors, who make a return, and the Koopalings, and search for coins. At the very end, they confront Bowser, who is powered up by the Koopalings after his first defeat. However, in classic Mario style, the Mario Bros. use a switch to drop Bowser into a pit. Peach is rescued and the brothers return home.
There is another mode in the game, Coin Rush, in which Mario must collect as many coins as possible in three random courses within the time limit and without being defeated once. There are + Clocks scattered throughout the courses, while Mario also gets more time by hitting Checkpoint Flags. Reaching the top of the flagpole doubles Mario's coin count, and defeating enemies as Gold Mario or after a Gold Ring is triggered awards additional coins.
New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
As usual, Mario is the main protagonist and playable character. Once again, he must save the Mushroom Kingdom from Bowser and his minions as he travels with his allies Luigi, Blue Toad, Yellow Toad, and his new allies, Miis. This game introduces Super Acorns, which give Mario a new form, Flying Squirrel Mario, when he collects them. In this form, Mario can glide and cling to walls. The upgraded P-Acorn allows him to fly indefinitely. His old power-ups, including but not limited to the Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, and Ice Flower, return. The Penguin Suit and Propeller Suit from New Super Mario Bros. Wii also return, but they are found only in certain Toad Houses and in Challenge Mode.
In this game, Mario discovers Baby Yoshis that aid him on his adventure by providing light, emitting bubbles, or floating. During his adventure, he encounters new enemies, including but not limited to Waddlewings, Nabbit, and Goombrats. To save Princess Peach, Mario must travel to a Koopaling's airship and defeat that Koopaling to proceed. When Mario finally arrives at Peach's Castle, it is conquered, and he must enter the modified castle to defeat Bowser and rescue Peach. Unlike in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, when Mario collects 99 lives, he keeps his cap.
In the downloadable content New Super Luigi U, due to Luigi replacing Mario as the main protagonist, Mario himself does not appear, marking his only absence in the entire Super Mario series. His absence from the game is referenced in three instances: In the opening sequence, his cap appears on the table; at the beginning of the Frosted Glacier level Broozers and Barrels, a snowman with Mario's face and a cap with his "M" on it can be seen; and an object known as the Luigi Block has Mario's emblem on it (despite being named after Luigi).
Mario reappears as a playable character in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. Mario remains a non-playable character in New Super Luigi U. When a Super Guide Block appears in New Super Luigi U, however, a computer-controlled Mario now appears to complete a level for the player.
Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury

Mario appeared in Super Mario 3D World for the Wii U. Mario is an optional playable character along with Luigi, Peach, Blue Toad and Rosalina who is available after completing the game. Mario is represented with his trademark color, red. As a playable character, he has no special abilities. However, he can perform various moves from the previous video games.
In the remake's Bowser's Fury campaign, Mario has no special moves, and can perform various moves from the previous video games.

Super Mario Maker
Mario is the only playable character. Unlike other Super Mario games, there is no plot in particular, as this is a level creation game. However, Mario can use Mystery Mushrooms to take on the appearances of a variety of other characters, including some other Nintendo and third party characters, specifically costumes. There are still several unlockable Mystery Mushroom costumes that alter Mario's sprite to a different iteration of himself. In Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, Mario cannot take on any costumes due to the removal of Mystery Mushrooms.

Super Mario Run
Mario is one of the playable characters. He is the only playable character at the start of the game, but the others are unlocked during the game's progress. Mario and Luigi are the only two of the playable characters to have a Small form, allowing him to be hit twice before losing a life, like in many other 2D Super Mario titles.
Statues of Mario can also be bought at the shop and built in Kingdom Builder. A golden Mario statue is also available for purchase via My Nintendo.
Super Mario Odyssey

Mario and Cappy are the protagonists of Super Mario Odyssey. As a playable character, Mario can perform all of the moves from past games, with the exception of the abilities granted to him via other characters. He can also perform special moves with Cappy. Mario can throw Cappy to reach objects. Additionally, Cappy can capture enemies; Mario can control the captured enemy's body. Mario can choose different costumes from different stores; many of the clothes reference Mario's previous installments.
Super Mario Maker 2
Mario appears as the main playable character, as a few others have been added. A Story Mode has been added, where Mario is the sole playable character, and he has to help the Toads rebuild a castle after Undodog had accidentally destroyed it.
In addition to power-ups from Super Mario Maker, there are a few more power-up items that Mario can use. One of them is the Super Bell, owing to the addition of a Super Mario 3D World style. In addition, he can use the Super Hammer in said style to turn into Builder Mario, previously only seen in promotional artwork for Super Mario Maker. In the Super Mario Bros. style, Mario can use the Superball Flower to become Superball Mario, just as in Super Mario Land. In the version 3.0.0 update, Mario has access to the SMB2 Mushroom, which turns him into SMB2 Mario, giving Mario his appearance and characteristics from Super Mario Bros. 2.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Mario is one of the 5 playable characters, alongside Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad and Princess Daisy. Mario can perform all of the moves from past 2D games, and has new power ups at his disposal such as the Wonder Flower and Wonder Seed.
In Dr. Mario series
Mario takes in a different alias in the first game of the puzzle subseries, Dr. Mario. Mario works alongside Nurse Toadstool (Princess Peach) at Mushroom Kingdom Hospital to combat three types of viruses: Fever, Chill, and Weird. Here, he must drop Capsules to destroy these viruses.
Dr. Mario 64 features a story behind the gameplay. During a flu outbreak, Dr. Mario attempts to use his Megavitamins to heal the citizens. Wario, however, steals the Megavitamins and wishes to profit from them. Mad Scienstein intervenes and takes the Megavitamins, so after Dr. Mario beats Wario, the two follow Mad Scienstein, defeating enemies from Wario Land 3. Mad Scienstein then reveals himself to be a worker for Rudy, who is afflicted with the cold. Dr. Mario proceeds to cure Rudy after beating him, though. If Dr. Mario has not lost any matches, however, Wario takes the Megavitamins and transforms to Vampire Wario. Or, if the player is using Wario, Dr. Mario becomes Metal Mario after ingesting the pills.
Dr. Mario Online Rx has similar gameplay to the original Dr. Mario, although there is an additional Virus Buster minigame. Dr. Mario Express is similar to Dr. Mario Online Rx but features no Virus Buster minigame.
In Dr. Mario World, Dr. Mario hunts down viruses to save infected Koopa Troopas, Toads, and Shy Guys after a virus outbreak happens in the Mushroom Kingdom. Other Mario characters join him as playable characters.
In Yoshi series
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Mario appeared in his infant form, Baby Mario. Baby Mario cannot be controlled, but Yoshi must avoid touching hazards and enemies. Baby Mario will be trapped in the bubble if Yoshi touches the enemy or hazard. If Yoshi does not catch Baby Mario, Toadies will take Baby Mario.

Mario Circuit 1 from Super Mario Kart also appears in the Shell Cup.
At first, Mario can only choose from his personal karts. Once the player completes all cups in either the Nitro or Retro Grand Prix on 150cc, he can choose from Toad's 4-Wheel Cradle, Princess Daisy's Light Dancer, Dry Bones' Banisher and Waluigi's Gold Mantis, before being able to choose between every other kart upon completing all Mirror Mode cups.

Mario is a Medium-sized racer. While his signature color remains red, his secondary color is blue. Mario can use any of the Medium karts and bikes. Another iteration of Mario Circuit appears as his personal course.
Mario Kart 7
Mario's personal course is Mario Circuit. His signature kart is the returning B Dasher. During Grand Prix races and Battle Mode, his rivals are Bowser and Metal Mario. However, if the latter has yet to be unlocked yet, Princess Peach will replace him until Metal Mario has been unlocked (which is by winning the 150cc Special Cup).
Mario Kart 8
Mario gets another circuit in the Flower Cup. His main rivals are Princess Peach and Bowser, whom he and Luigi will compete as his competitors and serves as a rival to both Luigi and Wario, along with Daisy. His signature karts are the B Dasher, and most likely the P-Wing. Metal Mario and Baby Mario return in the game, as well as Mario's Tanooki form, Tanooki Mario.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Mario's role is unchanged. Mario also gets another separate variation for a playable character, Gold Mario.
Mario Kart Tour
In Mario Kart Tour, Mario is an unlockable Super driver. His special skill is the Fire Flower. Mario also has a self-titled cup in the game, as well as self-named tours and Team Rally tours against Luigi and against Peach.

In Mario Discovery series
Mario is Missing!
Despite the game's title, the game stars Luigi as a playable character, as he has to rescue Mario from Bowser, who also plans to flood Earth by melting Antarctica's ice with hair dryers. In the end, Mario is rescued by Luigi from Bowser.
The way that Mario is captured varies between versions. In the MS-DOS version, Mario enters the castle alone, as Luigi is too scared to follow. Mario meets Bowser, who is in a butler disguise, and accepts candy from him, despite Luigi's warning not to take candy from strangers. Bowser uses this as a distraction to trap Mario in a net. Despite being captured, Mario in this version nonetheless manages to give contact to Luigi to guide him to the continents to stop Bowser's plans, as well as update him on the situation. Over the course of Luigi's journey, Mario tells him that he admitted to Bowser that he has a fear of the dark, which strained communication since Bowser is threatening him with his fear. In the Nintendo Entertainment System version, Mario is captured outside in the snow by a Koopa with a bag. In this version, he also reacts angrily to the title shortly before being captured by the Koopa. In the Super Nintendo Entertainment System version, Mario gets trapped inside a pitfall outside the castle.
Mario's Early Years! Fun with Letters
Mario and Princess Peach, as well as Yoshi in the Super Nintendo version, are controllable characters who traverse through various worlds to teach reading skills to young players. The PC version includes a narrative from Story World where Mario, Luigi, and Peach help free Bowser from a log. When Bowser falls into the mud, they join him and have fun. The Pig Out involves Mario and Luigi riding Peach's pig while she is not looking.
Mario's Early Years! Fun with Numbers
Similarly to Mario's Early Years! Fun with Letters, the game involves Mario or Princess Peach, as well as Yoshi in the Super Nintendo version, exploring several worlds that teach subjects such as Arabic numerals, basic mathematics such as counting and comparisons, and basic geometry such as identifying shapes.
Mario's Early Years! Preschool Fun
The game involves Mario or Princess Peach, as well as Yoshi in the Super Nintendo version, as controllable characters, this time to teach miscellaneous educational subjects not in the other two Mario's Early Years! titles. Tasks include identifying colors, counting, identifying sounds, and more. In Body World, Mario is used for learning about basic body parts, such as the nose, hands, and feet.
Mario's Time Machine

Following the event where Bowser steals various historic artifacts throughout various time periods to display at Bowser's Museum, Mario goes on a journey to return the artifacts to their respective original time periods to prevent history from being altered. In the Nintendo Entertainment System version, Mario also has to rescue Yoshi from Bowser.
In the Nintendo Entertainment System version, before Mario can use Bowser's time machine, the Timulator, he has to defeat Koopa Troopas in a Mario Bros.-like gameplay. Upon being defeated, the Koopa Troopas drop the stolen artifact. Mario then has to take the artifact and use the Timulator to travel back in time to the correct year and return the to their original location in a side-scrolling gameplay.
In the Super Nintendo version, Mario has to pick a stolen object from Bowser's Museum, dial the correct year on the Timulator, and do a surfing minigame where he has to collect enough Mushrooms for a whirlpool to appear. Upon entering the whirlpool, Mario can travel back to the year on the Timulator and return the object to its original location.

The referee wears different outfits depending on the tournament.
In the opening cutscene, Mario is one of the participants of the tournament. Here, he defeats Donkey Kong to gain access to the semifinals, where he defeats Yoshi and moves on to the finals against Luigi. While the two brothers are looking for the missing tennis ball prior to the match, Wario and his partner, Waluigi, appear and cause mischief. After this, Bowser and a Boo appear. Everyone stands back in fear, thinking that the two came to cause trouble as well. But Bowser and Boo reveal that they simply want to play a nice game of tennis, to which Mario exclaims, "Let's all play!" and all of them agree and cheer. Initially unknown to the cast, however, a Bob-omb walks onto the court and explodes.
Mario Tennis (Game Boy Color)
Mario is an unlockable playable character, and he is classified as an all-around type. However, he is a supporting non-playable character in the main story campaign, the Mario Tour. Here, Alex or Nina, the main character of the mode, faces Mario as a final opponent in Singles or Mario and Peach in Doubles on Castle Court. Once Mario is defeated, he is unlocked for play in Exhibition Mode.
Mario is used in a side minigame, Boo Blast, where he rallies with Luigi and tries to hit the Boos hovering above the net.
Mario Power Tennis

Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour

Mario is a default playable character in all modes. He has a drive of 212 yards and a Star Drive of 280 yards, having the fifth strongest drive. He has a high, straight trajectory. Although he can hit farther than many other characters, Mario's shots are more influenced by the wind because of his high trajectory, but can be sent farther with a favorable wind direction. Mario has a decently strong impact and the second best spin, only behind Bowser, although Mario's control is very poor, tied with Donkey Kong for the second worst and only better than Bowser and Petey Piranha. As such, Mario's shot are more sensitive to veering off if the player does not perfectly time the hits while Mario is swinging. When Mario hits a Nice Shot, the ball is encased in flames.
In the opening cinematic, Mario and Luigi examine a trophy before they hear the calls of Peach and Daisy. They form a quartet and go on an adventure in a freestyle golfing exhibition. After Peach goes first, Mario makes his move next before Daisy and Luigi make theirs. Mario and both princesses rally after Luigi's recent shots hits the flagpole of the hole. Later in the cinematic, Mario and his quartet are strolling in the wilderness until they see Bowser's Castle in the distance. Mario makes his next shot, which unknowingly strikes Wario, Waluigi, and Bowser. In the process, Bowser fumbles a Bob-omb, where the explosion can be seen afar from where Mario's quartet witnesses.

In Mario Baseball series
Mario Superstar Baseball

Mario is a playable character of the balanced type, although his running is only average. Mario's Star Skill is the classic Fireball, which allows him to pitch or hit the ball at high speeds while it is engulfed in flames. In Challenge Mode, if Mario is on the player's team or the captain, he cannot use his Star Skill unless the Red Fireball has been purchased. Mario's default team is the Mario Sunshines, which mostly consists of non-playable characters from Super Mario Sunshine. Mario has his own stadium, Mario Stadium.
Mario's special abilities include Wall Jump, which can help him catch fly balls at the edge of the field, and an improved Sliding Catch. Overall, Mario's abilities are very similar to Luigi's.
In the opening cinematic, Mario and Luigi are practicing at Mario Stadium until a flyer with Bowser depicted on it arrives. Later in the scene, Mario is facing off against Wario's team at Mario Stadium. It all starts when Mario is about to head towards home plate to score the game's first run, but Donkey Kong is in sight, ready to receive the ball. Mario leaps on Donkey Kong, causing him to flinch and miss the catch, which allows Mario to freely score the game's first run. Mario's next pitch results in Wario hitting a home run, much to Mario's disappointment. Later in the game, Mario's next pitch travels at extreme speed that it catches fire and overloads a radar gun, but nevertheless gets a strikeout. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Mario hits a walk-off home run against Wario, prompting Peach and the rest of Mario's teammates to storm the field and celebrate, unaware that Bowser is in the seats viewing the match.
In the ending cinematic, after defeating Bowser's team in Challenge Mode via Special Cup, Mario tethers through the long grass as night falls and enters the Field of Dreams, where the stadium lights turn on. Peach and other characters have stowed aboard the field and greet Mario before Bowser arrives on scene, wanting to challenge Mario. As the characters take their positions, Mario makes the first pitch before the credits roll.
Mario Super Sluggers

Mario returns as a playable character. He had his batting and running skills improved, but his pitching and fielding are unchanged. Mario's ability is Enlarge, which enables him to knock away third-base and home-base players and possibly the baseball if he succeeds a close play. Mario's default team is now the Mario Fireballs, consisting of himself, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, the Piantas, Nokis, a Monty Mole, and a Blooper.
During the opening cinematic, Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Birdo, Daisy, and Red Toad ride a yacht heading towards the Baseball Kingdom. Once arriving on the island, Mario and other view the kingdom from the summit of a lighthouse. After arriving at Mario Stadium, Mario brandishes a Wii Remote that transforms into a baseball and a baseball glove. Mario throws out the first pitch, which Daisy counters. Later in the cinematic, Mario receives the ball thrown from Peach and then throws it to Luigi, who gets body checked by Donkey Kong. Luigi holds on to the ball to make the final out as everyone else on Mario's team storm the field to celebrate.
In the second of the four cinematics, Mario and Luigi feel a rumble and head to the northern portion of the Baseball Kingdom to investigate. It turns out that Bowser Jr. and his minions have arrived, where Bowser Jr.'s Playroom has rammed into the island.
In the third cinematic, after defeating Bowser's team in Challenge Mode, Mario celebrates with the other characters in the center of the infield. After doing so, Mario and the other characters march toward the entrance of the Baseball Kingdom to gaze towards the binary sunset before the lights turn on for the night.
In the fourth and final cinematic, Mario and Donkey Kong participate in a freestyle home run derby exhibition by hitting Bob-ombs toward the sky that set off fireworks, which attracts the attention of the other characters who were having desserts and refreshments at the Daisy Cruiser. At one point, Wario and Waluigi sabotage the cannon by inserting a Bullet Bill, which launches prematurely and aims directly towards Mario. Mario acknowledges that he will not have enough time to react, but Bowser emerges out of nowhere and uses his own bat to hit the bullet, which sails towards the sky at the speed of light and sets off a chain reaction of fireworks. Mario adamantly dismisses the fact that Bowser saved his own end, feeling that Bowser and his son Bowser Jr. should not have been spared after starting the chaos in the Baseball Kingdom to begin with.
In Super Princess Peach
The game reverses the roles in which Mario and Luigi instead have to be rescued by Princess Peach. Bowser sends an army of Hammer Bros. (led by Army Hammer Bro) and Goombas to invade Peach's Castle. Mario, Luigi, and the Toads, busy defending the castle, are subdued by the power of the Vibe Scepter and captured by a group of Hammer Bros. Princess Peach is not in the castle at the time and so escapes the attack. Mario and the others are sent to Vibe Island, the source of the enemies' power. There they have no power to escape, so Princess Peach, along with a magical umbrella named Perry given to her by Toadsworth, goes there to rescue them. After defeating many of Bowser's minions and rescuing Luigi and a number of Toads, Princess Peach defeats Bowser by using emotional powers called Vibes, and Mario escapes himself. Princess Peach kisses him, and he gives her a bunch of flowers.

In dodgeball, Mario rolls forward to avoid any incoming hit. In volleyball, Mario spins when he spikes. In all sports, Mario uses a fiery blast powerful enough, requiring opponents to resist it while sliding backwards if they do not want Mario to score.
