"Lights Out" is the first segment of the fourth episode of the second season of Kiff. It is the seventy-first segment overall.
Synopsis
Kiff and Barry accidentally cause a townwide blackout by upsetting a lighthouse keeper.
Plot
For Essential Worker Appreciation Day, Miss Deer Teacher has assigned her students to form pairs and choose an essential Table Town worker to thank. After flipping through a phone book, Kiff and Barry select the keeper of the Pantry Point Lighthouse, located atop a mountain far away from downtown Table Town.
After a long walk, Kiff and Barry reach the lighthouse and present the keeper with a gift basket as a show of appreciation. Touched, he invites the duo inside the lighthouse and thanks them for being the first visitors he has ever received. However, their well-meaning gesture leads the keeper to conclude that if Kiff and Barry managed to walk the distance to visit him, then anybody else also could have, but could not be bothered to. Feeling unappreciated by Table Town, the keeper decides to unplug the lighthouse's main bulb in retaliation, plunging the city into total darkness in the middle of the night.
Kiff and Barry spend two hours stumbling in the dark trying to get back home to come up with a plan to restore power. Thinking they have reached Barry's house, the duo turn their phone flashlights on and find themselves at the lighthouse, right back where they started. They try reasoning with the keeper, but he locks himself in his room and drowns them out with music. Not wanting to get blamed for the blackout, Kiff and Barry hold off calling any adults for help and decide to try to resolve the situation on their own. Suddenly, they hear the sound of an arriving ship and rush to warn its crew that they are about to crash, but the crew are unable to understand the duo's instructions on which direction to turn. The crew end up jumping ship, causing the vessel, which was coincidentally carrying a shipment of new lighthouse bulbs, to crash and sink.
Noticing a light inside Reggie's house, Kiff and Barry call Reggie for help, hoping he can put his technological expertise to use. They learn that the light is coming from a candle Reggie lit in memory of his supposedly busted cellphone, then inform him that the phone is not busted, but rather failing to charge due to the power outage. Reggie communicates them intel about the impending arrival of a ship carrying big bulbs, unaware that the ship has sunk into the ocean. Kiff and Barry then see two shooting stars in the night sky. As a last resort, they wish upon the stars for the situation to somehow resolve itself, but nothing happens.
Out of options, Kiff and Barry are forced to return downtown and get help. Banging on pots and pans, the duo walk through town loudly announcing that they got Table Town in trouble, and to follow their lead to get things fixed. Kiff and Barry lead their fellow Tabletonians in a song expressing their appreciation for the lighthouse keeper, and they all walk to the lighthouse together to sing it for the keeper himself. Taken aback by the gathered crowd, the keeper, rather than appreciating the gesture, is instead reminded that he became a keeper in the first place because he likes being left alone. He orders everyone to stop singing and shoos them away, then reinstalls the lightbulb, restoring power to the city. As Kiff and Barry head home, the sunken ship suddenly rises from the ocean and continues sailing.

- ↑ De Vito, Angela (March 26, 2025). We love the lighthouse keeper 💡 For this retake I separated out Kiff’s face and ears so I could have a nice rig to give her a fun head bounce. I also improved her pot banging. And we have some lovely comp magic to add a rimlight. . . . . #kiff #kiffiskingyo #animation #animationprocess #harmony #toonboom #disneykiff. Instagram.
