Maybe-sitting

Main page

"Maybe-sitting" is the second segment of the sixteenth episode of the first season of Kiff. It is the thirty-second segment overall.

Synopsis

When Kiff shadows Harry and Terri as they watch Kristophe, she learns that being in charge is not so easy.

Plot

Kiff wants to be a member of the Table Town Babysitter's Society, as it is virtually impossible to get hired as a babysitter in Table Town without their connections. At the frozen yogurt shop in the Table Town Mall, Kiff approaches Jill and her fellow representatives from the society at their table and requests to join the society. After initially turning Kiff down due to her lack of experience, they agree to let her prove herself by shadowing Harry and Terri, who are babysitting Kristophe that day while Mary is at an astronomy convention.

Kiff arrives at the Buns residence eager to gain babysitting experience from Harry and Terri, only to find them reading magazines on the couch instead of watching Kristophe. Kiff and Barry take Kristophe upstairs to his room and play with him. Annoyed that she is not learning anything, Kiff decides to scare Harry and Terri into taking babysitting more seriously by pretending that Kristophe has gone missing. Harry and Terri panic and begin trashing the house in search of Kristophe, so Kiff and Barry admit that Kristophe is only in his room. When Kiff and Barry return to the room, however, Kristophe is nowhere to be found, as he is hiding in a closet downstairs. They rush downstairs looking for Kristophe, but Harry and Terri assume that they are faking again and refuse to help.

In Kristophe's room, Kiff and Barry find an issue of Prison Break magazine containing a guide to tunneling, which leads them to conclude that Kristophe dug a hidden tunnel in the backyard. While they dig in the backyard trying to intercept the tunnel, the Babysitter's Society representatives stop by, so Kiff has Barry wear baby clothes and pose as Kristophe. The representatives are impressed by Kiff and want to photograph her and "Kristophe" for the cover of Babysitter's Monthly. Barry angrily refuses and unknowingly stabs his trowel into an underground pipe, causing water to spout and douse the representatives.

When Kiff admits the truth, the Babysitter's Society representatives declare that she will never join the society and leave, while Harry and Terri scold her for ruining the backyard and losing Kristophe. Mary then walks out onto the porch and picks up Kristophe, who has crawled outside. The damaged pipe spouts out the keys to Mary's hot rod, which she lost in the bathtub years earlier. Grateful, Mary offers Kiff a regular gig babysitting Kristophe, then takes her and Barry on a ride in her hot rod. The hot rod drives over a puddle of water, which splashes onto the representatives.

Trivia

Cultural references

  • The episode's title is a pun on "babysitting".
  • The issue of Gnome Health that Harry is seen reading mentions "hot gnome summer", a play on the slang expression "hot girl summer".
  • The figure in one of Kristophe's artworks hung on the door in his room bears a striking resemblance to the Crewmate characters from the 2018 video game Among Us.

Continuity

  • An issue of Olive Aficionado magazine is seen in the Buns residence. Later, a store named Ollie's Olive Emporium is seen while Mary, Kiff, and Barry are cruising through downtown Table Town in Mary's hot rod.
  • The Fran's Franks billboard from "Two for One Hot Dogs" is seen while Mary, Kiff, and Barry are driving.

Errors

  • While Terri speaks prominently in the episode, Nichole Sakura is only credited for voicing Jill in the end credits.
