"Cocina Island" is the second segment of the fifth episode of the second season of Kiff. It is the seventy-fourth segment overall.
Synopsis
The Chatterleys take Barry on their island vacation, but he seems to have a dark secret.
Plot
Kiff stares down at a puddle, sadly stating that Barry is not who she thought he was and that their friendship is over. The scene then flashes back to the Chatterley residence three days earlier. Martin has just received an email saying that he has won an all-expenses-paid family trip to Cocina Island. Against Kiff and Barry's warnings that the email is probably a scam, Martin follows his gut and clicks on the attached link to claim his prize.
Unexpectedly, the email turns out to be genuine, and soon Martin, Beryl, Kiff, and Barry are on a cruise ship heading to Cocina Island. On the ship, Kiff and Barry pass the time by making up backstories about the other passengers. One of the passengers overhears Kiff and Barry and approaches the two, fondly recalling how she and her best friend used to do the same thing until an unspecified "incident". She then wishes Kiff and Barry good luck before leaving them.
When the ship reaches the island, the passenger from earlier takes off her sunglasses, scarf, and coat, then introduces herself as Rhonda, the manager of the Cocina Island resort. Rhonda tours the Chatterleys and Barry around the resort and escorts them to their hotel room. Afterwards, Kiff and Barry spend the day enjoying the resort's amenities before meeting back up with Beryl and Martin for dinner. At the restaurant, Rhonda waits their table and notices Kiff and Barry clinking their glasses together, prompting her to mention that she also used to do so with her best friend. She then whispers in Kiff's ear, advising her to remember that nothing lasts except heartbreak. While Barry goes to tip the restaurant's piano player, Kiff looks around and notices Rhonda staring sadly at her.
Back in the hotel room, Kiff remains unnerved by Rhonda's ominous messages, while Barry assures her that their friendship will always be secure. In the middle of the night, Kiff wakes up and notices Barry reentering the hotel room, only for him to deny ever leaving. The next day, Kiff's suspicions are raised when, despite it only being 11 a.m., Barry grows tired and falls asleep while swimming in the pool. Kiff goes to the lobby to ask Rhonda why she and her best friend drifted apart, but Rhonda is distressed that the resort's new ice sculpture has melted away. When Rhonda mentions that somebody must have melted the sculpture the previous night, Kiff wonders if Barry might be the culprit.
That night, Kiff has a nightmare about Barry melting the ice sculpture, then awakens to find Barry using a hair dryer attached to an extremely long cable. When Barry suggests telling bedtime stories, Kiff admits to her "bad" act of filling up the same ice cream cone five times earlier that day at the buffet, hoping to get Barry to confess to a crime of his own. However, Barry reveals nothing and falls asleep. Kiff locks the hair dryer in the hotel room safe and takes an orange before going back to bed. When Barry wakes up some time later, he quickly checks that Kiff is asleep before once again sneaking out of the hotel room. However, Kiff has been awake the entire time, having used orange peels to make her eyes look closed. She unlocks the safe and finds the hair dryer still there, giving her hope that Barry is innocent. She then spots him heading out to the lobby and heads there as well, only to find the resort's replacement ice sculpture melting into a puddle.
The episode returns to the opening scene. Kiff continues her monologue further, revealing that her statements about Barry from the start of the episode were only things she would hypothetically say "if I was completely crazy, but I'm only a little crazy". She resolves to get Barry to confront his own problem. At the restaurant with Barry, Beryl, and Martin on the final night of the vacation, Kiff has a melting ice cube served to their table to make Barry realize that she knows about the melted sculptures. Rhonda recognizes Kiff's intent and gives her a microphone to address Barry in a more dramatic fashion. In front of everyone at the restaurant, Kiff pinpoints Barry as the culprit behind the meltings.
Before Rhonda can have him arrested for vandalism, Barry denies being behind the crime and, while playing a piano solo, he finally explains why he has been sneaking out at night: wanting to show the Chatterleys his gratitude for the vacation, he has been taking late-night piano lessons from the piano player in order to play a song he wrote thanking the Chatterleys, which he then proceeds to perform, though it turns out to be much more simplistic than his piano intro leading up the song. When Rhonda then questions who the true culprit was, Martin points out that the statues could have simply melted from the heat, which Rhonda accepts as a more logical explanation. Having apparently fallen out with her best friend over an incident also involving melted ice, Rhonda, now reminded that ice can melt naturally, calls up her friend to apologize, and the two reconcile. Kiff hugs Barry as he wraps up his song, to everyone's applause.
