Onyankopon is a supporting character in the manga and anime Attack on Titan. He is a former Marleyan soldier and a member of the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers, who helped create a bond with Paradis Island, in order for them to help out Zeke Yeager in return, who he thought would help the nations taken over by the Marleyan Empire.
After Zeke was betrayed by Eren Yeager, who activated the Rumbling with the intend to wipe out all human life outside of Paradis Island. Onyankopon would become a member of the alliance between the Survey Corps and Marley and acted as the pilot who transported the Warriors and the Corps to Eren in order to stop the Rumbling.
He is voiced by Kouji Hiwatari in Japanese and Zeno Robinson in English.
Appearance
Onyankopon appears to be a man of average height with black hair that he keeps in a short crew cut, while the back of his head is completely shaved. He has dark skin with brown eyes and also has full lips.
He normally wore the standard Anti-Marleyan Volunteers attire, which consisted of a dark jacket with a white button up shirt under it. During his introduction he wore the standard Marleyan military uniform and helmet. He would wear the Marleyan uniform when he piloted an airship during the Raid on Liberio. When he visited Marley together with the officers of the Survey Corps, he wore a dark blue suit with a grey vest under it, along with a white shirt. While also wearing a white fedora.
Personality
Onyankopon quickly presented himself as a sociable and cooperative man. Being genuinely supportive of the people in Paradis Island and doesn’t look down on them for being Subjects of Ymir, like the rest of humanity does. Onyankopon also appears to be a big picture thinker, looking at the future from a hopeful point of view and disagrees with Yelena’s euthanization plan, as Onyankopon’s affable mindset believes that it’s children who make and shape the future.
Onyankopon is a noticeably intelligent man, having a lot of understanding on new technology such as airplanes, and helped the military of Paradis to construct their harbor.
Onyankopon was also religious, believing that every person was wanted and made by a “god”, who he also believed gave Ymir Fritz her power. Making him not accuse the Subjects of Ymir to demonic people.
His overall compassionate mind and importance on the support with the people around him, made Onyankopon a valuable and sincere person who thought the best for not only Paradis Island, but also for all of humanity at large.
Story
Background
Onyankopon lived in an unidentified nation. It was eventually invaded and conquered by Marley during an unknown war. The whole country ceased to exist and its whole lands were annexed into the Marleyan Empire. Many of its citizens were unwillingly conscripted into the Marleyan army, with Onyankopon being one of those people.
In 850, during the Marley Mid-East War, he was be stationed as a Navy soldier and at some point meet a fellow soldier named Yelena, who convinced him to join her rebellious cause. Onyankopon would be one of many conscripted soldiers from numerous conquered nations that began plotting with Yelena to take down Marley, calling themselves the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers. Despite having gathered a decent following, they weren’t capable of doing much to such a large and powerful nation. Until Yelena started working together with Zeke Yeager (in reality, Yelena organized the Volunteers for Zeke since the beginning). She would then persuade Onyankopon and his allies of some unspecified plan that surrounded Zeke and Eren Yeager activating the power of the Founder and help the rebel soldiers to fight side by side with Paradis and defeat Marley, with the promise of reviving the fallen independent nations of the Marleyan continent.
Onyankopon only didn’t know that Yelena had lied on many of her claims. She told him and the others that she was also from a nation that was conquered by Marley, but she was secretly a Marleyan citizen herself, having faked her background and although the true plan was to make Eren and Zeke meet, it was secretly for them to cause a mass sterilization of all Subjects of Ymir, making them go extinct in the next 100 years and results in the Titans to disappear from the world.
Marley Arc
After the failure in the Paradis Island Operation. Onyankopon was forced to participate in the upcoming expedition to Paradis Island, along with Yelena and other conscripted soldiers, but with a majority of Marleyan combatants.
Onyankopon was seen standing in a line next to Yelena before he departed, where they got a sendoff by the rest of the Marleyan military, with the Warrior Pieck Finger also being present.
After the voyage to Paradis Island was over, and Onyankopon with the other soldiers reached the island’s southern shore. He is quickly caught off-guard when the ship they are on is lifted into the sky. The holder of the Attack Titan, Eren Yeager has grabbed their ship from underwater and hold on to it as he walked on shore. After throwing the ship on the ground, Onyankopon’s captain would after a short conversation with the Survey Corps commander Hange Zoë, be shot dead by Yelena. Shocking the Marleyan soldiers who are apprehended by Onyankopon and the other conscripted soldiers.
Onyankopon is present during the meeting with Hange and Levi Ackerman, sitting next to Yelena. They discuss the current technologic landscape of Marley, with Onyankpon mentioning the newer arsenal of aerial weaponry and their ability to attack from the sky, shocking Hange. But she then assumes that Onyankopon and Yelena must have a large backing if they are capable of opposing Marley, Yelena however rebuffs this. She tells Hange that she, Onyankopon and the conscripts come from conquered nations that began losing hope from their lack of power, until they met Zeke, with the mission to help free the Eldian people.
Onyankopon would after the meeting was over quickly begin helping the Island’s military as an attempt to build trust with them and the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers. Throughout the period between 851 and late 853, the rebels would help the Eldians to sink 31 Marleyan scouting ships and capture the invading soldiers.
During these times, Onyankopon explained how to manufacture a harbor to the original Survey Corps members, in order for them to travel into the outside world. Sasha Braus then suddenly asks him why his skin is so dark. Onyankopon responds with saying that he believes a “creator” wanted to make the world more interesting by having different groups of people. He says that it also applies to them being Subjects of Ymir, claiming that they were wanted by this “creator”. Armin asks Onyankopon who created them, and he responds that it is “God”, who he also believes granted Ymir Fritz her power. Onyankopon then humbly claims that it’s just his interpretation and that everyone is free to believe what they want, with Armin remembering this occasion fondly.
Onyankopon was present during a conversation with two captive Marleyan engineers, Hange, Armin, and a several other Volunteers. The two Marleyan soldiers would after reluctantly explain the mechanics regarding train transport, and become much more open and accepting towards their Eldian captors, because of their respectful and friendly treatment towards him, with Onyankopon and his accomplices pleasantly looking at their newly formed bond.
In 852, Zeke and the Volunteers also arranged a meeting between envoys from Hizuru and the Eldian government to discuss Zeke's plan and to show the world the power of the Rumbling by presumably attacking some major military facility in Marley and the country's naval forces, pass down the Beast and Founding Titans, negotiate peace with the world through Hizuru's mediation, and develop the island's technology until the use of the Rumbling would no longer be required.
Through Hizuru's envoy Kiyomi Azumabito, Zeke disclosed the official plan to use the Rumbling as a deterrent against the nations of the world, by releasing a sample of Wall Titans from Shiganshina District only, to bring them to Marley's coast and scare humanity with it, and presumably use it to crush any naval force that would attempt to destroy the Titans. Based on one later sentence of Yelena's and details related to Zeke's different and secret true plan against the world, which was unknown to almost all the Volunteers, it is possible that the limited Rumbling was also meant to cause Marley to face financial collapse for losing most of its warships, which would give hope to Marley's annexed territories such as Onyankopon's homeland to rise for independence. The Rumbling would be expected to force Marley and any other hostile countries to accept peace negotiations with Paradis through Hizuru's intermediary diplomacy, and for the world to leave the island alone for the next 50 years, while the Eldians would keep developing their military strength and try to estabilish friendships with any country willing to listen. The prospect of making allies with other ally nations along with Hizuru would give the Volunteers a chance to stand up to Marley and fight to restore their native annexed homelands as countries. Due to Zeke having only less than three years to live at best, and himself being still busy fighting in the Marley Mid-East War, arrangements to procure Titan serum and pass down the Beast Titan to Queen Historia and her future children were made.
At an unknown point, Onyankopon would travel to the Marelyan mainland in order to meet up with Kiyomi Azumabito and make preparations for the planned expedition of the Survey Corps to find allies, starting from the Association to Protect the Subjects of Ymir, an unpopular Marleyan political organization defending the populations of all the world's internment zones fighting for their human rights. This was done in an attempt to avoid terrorizing the world with the Rumbling and force humanity to comply to Eldia's demands through force, as Paradis Island's government believed it would only make the Eldians the devils that humanity feared so much.
During 853, Onyankopon greeted the original Survey Corps members and welcome them to Marley, at the country's largest trading port city. Upon seeing the scout’s strange reaction to seeing a car, Levi sarcastically tells Onyankopon that they are probably going to try and feed carrots to the car, causing Onyankopon to laugh, only to quickly be shocked at seeing the scouts actually by carrots. After a brief incident between a Mid-Eastern refugee pickpocketer and several citizens at the city's market, Onyankopon guided the Scouts to the Azumabito estate.
After the conversation with Kiyomi was over, the scouts would find themselves to in a party with refugees from a Mid-Eastern nation that now reside in Marley due to war. Onyankopon would find them afterwards sleeping in refugees’ tent, together with Hange and Levi.
The next day, Eren abandoned the Survey Corps dissappeared on his own. Onyankopon and his allies were not able to find him anywhere and spent several months and the rest of the year 853 and the begin of 854 in Marley, looking for him and for solutions to make peace with the world. During 854, the newspapers declared that the Marley Mid-East War finally ended with Marley's victory in the Battle of Fort Slava, and a few weeks later Onyankopon and his group received a letter from Eren, mailed from the city of Liberio, the Warrior Unit's hometown. In the letter, Eren assured them that he was doing fine and revealed to them that he and Zeke already made their own secret plans a long time ago and that he (Eren) decided to go along with Zeke's plan of using the Rumbling to secure 50 more years of safety for the island. Following letters during the end of the following month, revealed to the group's horror that Zeke and Eren were preparing to terrorize humanity and provoke the world into war and action against Eldia in Willy Tybur's upcoming international festival in the Liberio internment zone, the Yeager family's true home, where Marley inteded to declare war on Paradis and convince other nations to join the cause. The last letter revealed the plan to raid Liberio, bring Zeke to Paradis after faking his death, the necessity to destroy the Marleyan military's primary naval ports in the city, and the necessity to procure a vehicle for escape.
Over a month since the end of the Marley Mid-East War, when Eren Yeager left his comrades to attack the world during Willy Tybur's festival in Liberio, Onyankopon followed Zeke and Armin's escape plans and acted as a pilot for a stolen Marleyan zeppelin, in order to pick up Zeke, Eren, and the other Survey Corps members. Yelena and all the new members of the Corps were deployed by Hange to retrieve Eren in Liberio before he could initiate the attack. After failing find him and the deaths of Willy Tybur, many important VIPS and diplomats, and numerous executive leaders of Marley's military government, the Survey Corps had to join the battle, defend Eren, and retrieve Zeke. Onyankopon flew the zeppelin to the destroyed military ports in Liberio, to pick up Armin from his Colossal Titan. He then flew the zeppelin from the Marleyan parts of the city to the Eldian internment zone, where he got the coordination’s from the lights placed by the Survey Corps soldiers. Hange is seen by his side and leaves the piloting to him as they are making their escape from Marley, with his leader Zeke now with them.
Once they are back on Paradis Island, Onyankopon, Yelena, and the rest of the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers are seen presenting large amounts of Titan spinal fluid stolen from Marley that they give to the Garrison. Their commander Dot Pixis, detains them all, however. As the island’s government still claims Zeke to be threat, and they trust him even less after he betrayed his own comrades and family in Marley and dragged the island's military into raiding Liberio and putting it against the entire world. The Military already refused to trust Zeke due to all the devastating actions he committed against the island’s population, and many still believed him and the Volunteers to be Marley's secret agents. Unbeknownst to Onyankpon, Yelena, Hange, and the other Volunteers and the Survey Corps, the Eldian military was already planning to turn Historia into a Titan and have Zeke fed to her as soon as he came to the island and brought Titan injections for them, and the only reason why this did not happen was due to Historia's sudden suspicious pregnancy, which is suspected to have been caused by the Volunteers or the Marleyan POWs to protect Zeke.
War for Paradis Arc
The military of Paradis finally learns Zeke and his Volunteers' actual detailed plan to secure the island's safety for the next 50 years. All along, Zeke wanted to Marley and as many nations as possible, especially the major ones, to form a coalition together to destroy the island, which is why it was Zeke himself who convinced Marley's General to resume military hostilities against Paradis right after the Mid-East War, and why he caused the Raid on Liberio. Now the Global Alliance is expected to form and Zeke wants to give the world a month of time to assemble at another military port in Marley, before releasing the small Rumbling to crush the united naval fleet of the Allied Nations. According to Zeke and Yelena, this will cause Marley and all its allies to face financial collapse, and thus having their own political matters to solve instead of bothering with Paradis Island, who will be able to try negotiate for peace through Hizuru's delegation. However, this plan only made the island's government lose all trust in Zeke, Eren, and the Volunteers, believing Eren has been fooled by his half-brother and fearing that pushing the world against Eldia was always the Volunteers' plan all along, to secure world peace. However, Onyankopon and the other Volunteers never knew about Zeke's true plan and had no part in arranging the Raid on Liberio or in making Eren ally with Zeke on his own (except Yelena, who in reality was always working closely with Zeke all along).
Investigating the Volunteers and their detainment, Hange is allowed by Premier Zachary to meet Onyankopon at the location where he is being detained. He tells her that he’s disappointed in the island’s distrust towards him and the Volunteers. As they helped Paradis to develop their expertise on technology, and that they truly devoted themselves to the Eldians. Hange is just as unhappy as him and reveals after noticing Onyankopon’s lack of knowledge regarding Yelena and Eren, that the two secretly talked to one another, before the attack on Liberio occurred. Onyankopon convinces Hange that he truly didn’t know about their meeting, and Hange believes this. She asks him more information about Yelena, with Onyankopon revealing that Yelena was quite ruthless in her methods. He explains that she would bring together numerous people in the Marleyan military to her cause, also including people of half Marleyan origins. This caused tensions among the conscripted soldiers and the Marleyans, with Yelena killing some of the Marleyans in order to prevent a treason to occur. While saying this, Onyankopon remembers a moment when Yelena shot a Marleyan ally in the head with Onyankopon and other Volunteers locking on in shock. He still admits that they would nonetheless keep following her. Hange finds it to be strange, as Yelena would try to protect the rights of the Marleyan captives and gave them jobs, along with a limited amount of freedom. Onyankopon believes that it was an attempt to compensate for her callous behavior towards them previously. Hange still feeling suspicious, brings Onyankopon with her for the time being.
Onyankopon is present during the meeting regarding the assassination of the island’s military commander, Darius Zackley. The current military leaders discuss who could be responsible for such a decisive attack. Hange defends Onyankopon along with the rest of the Volunteers, claiming that he was with her, and the rest of the Volunteers were still under arrest.
During the second meeting, when it became clear who the culprits were, and the military detected a large amount of defected soldiers who flocked to Eren Yeager’s cause. The senior Survey Corps soldiers decide to visit the Marleyan captives who had now obtained jobs, with Onyankopon joining them in their travel to a restaurant at Trost District.
As he and the others arrive to the restaurant, Onyankopon explains to the Marleyan cook Niccolo about the fact that they have to question him once he’s done serving his guests, unbeknownst to Onyankopon and the others, two of those guests, Ben and Mia, are actually Warrior candidates. Onyankopon would wait for a short period of time in a waiting room until they heard a loud noise coming from the dining room. Niccolo found out about the two Warriors true identity and after a conversation between him and Artur Braus, Niccolo reveals the truth about the wine, that one of the Warriors, Falco, accidently ingested during a quarrel with Niccolo. He claims that it was Yelena who forced him to serve it to them. Hange immediately stares at Onyankopon, but he swears that he didn’t know about it. She would task Onyankopon to tell the information to the other senior Survey Corps soldiers, but as he goes to their waiting room, he’s stopped dead in his tracks by the Yeagerists who hold him at gunpoint. He calls out for Hange and she has an exchange with the Yeagerists leader Floch Forster, who reveals that he knew about the tainted wine, stating the link between the Yeagerists and Yelena, all what Onyankopon had no knowledge of. Onyankopon and the others are detained and transitioned to Shiganshina District.
Onyankopon is seen sitting at a table with Yelena, other Anti-Marleyan Volunteers and Dot Pixis. Onyankopon, although free because of his status as a Volunteer, is noticeably unhappy with how things turned out. Yelena and Pixis exchange their views on the situation regarding the wine, that Pixis himself also downed, and the current coup d’état that is happening to the Military Seniors by the Yeagerists with the wine. Yelena tells him that if they had simply trusted Zeke since the beginning, that the “world” could have been saved earlier. This catches everyone’s attention, including Onyankopon, because he and the rest all believed that Yelena’s plan was to help Paradis Island specifically, and the small-scale Rumbling would intimidate the rest of the world so they wouldn’t attack the island. Onyankopon and the rest don’t get a straight answer from Yelena, however.
Onyankopon, Yelena and the Marleyan soldier Griez are seen visiting the senior Survey Corps soldiers in their jailcell. Connie angrily asks Onyankopon to let them go, expecting him to still be on their side, but he tells simply finds it ironic as he himself was put under arrest not too long ago, and he suggest that everyone should just keep quiet so Eren and Zeke can convene. Jean attempts to presume what Yelena’s true goal is, now that she has the military under her palm, but Onyankopon reluctantly states to him that the Volunteers helped Paradis out of their "primitive" ways, which angers Connie and fuels the uneasiness of the situation. Niccolo proceeds to berate Griez for his betrayel, only for him to give his own piece in return. Griez shows his difference with Onyankopon regarding his views on the Eldians, as Griez starts berating Niccolo’s deceased lover in front of him. This causes Yelena to shoot Griez in the head, shocking everyone including the now disturbed Onyankopon. He is later seen taking care of Griez’s corpse as Yelena explains Zeke's true plan of Eldia's "euthanization" claiming it will save both Eldia and Marley from further suffering.
A member of the Yeagerist storms in and announces her the invasion of a Marleyan soldier. Onyankopon follows Yelena to the roof as they go to confront the infiltrator Pieck Finger and the captive Gabi Braun. Eren assisting Onyankopon and Yelena, tasks Pieck to show them where their enemies are, only for her to point at him. The ground breaks upon as the Jaw Titan attacks Eren from below shocking Onyankopon and the others. He and Yelena are astounded as they look up and see five Marleyan zeppelins descending from the sky.
Onyankopon watches as Eren’s Attack Titan goes up to fight Reiner Braun's Armored Titan, Yelena commands Onyankopon and the other Volunteers to start mobilizing the soldiers. Onyankopon watches in horror and fear as the Marleyan army gets the upper hand and massacres numerous Yeagerists from both ground infantry forces and the Air Force from five zeppelins. Shocked at how Marley attacked after only one month from the Raid on Liberio, Onyankopon goes down back to the jailcell in order to free the senior Survey Corps soldiers so they can help protect Eren. But Connie launches at Onyankopon and pins him to a wall, he claims Onyankopon to be a traitor, but Onyankopon states that he had no other choice, as Yelena would’ve killed him. Armin is capable of calming Connie and he retells the words Onyankopon said a few years before, about the concept of different people existing. Onyankopon once again declares that he didn’t have any awareness of the tainted wine or Yelena and Zeke's euthanasia plan. He declares that helping Paradis was really an important part of the Volunteers plan, and that the euthanasia destroys Paradis’s future, as children are the future in and of itself. Jean notices that if they help Eren and Zeke, they shall be assisting them to commit Zeke and Yelena’s euthanasia plan, but Onyankopon maintains his position that they are important to the protection of the island, as they both are still needed for the small-scale Rumbling to defeat the Global Alliance. After some convincing from Armin, the senior soldier all agree to participate in the battle, but before that, Onyankopon insist that they help him free all the Yeagerists’s captives.
As the battle outside continues, Onyankopon and the rest of the Volunteers stay inside the headquarters. Zeke screams and everyone who drank the wine are turned into Pure Titans, only do they go after the Marleyan soldiers, and Onyankopon with the rest are temporarily safe inside the fortress. Everything is completely changed when Eren and Zeke make contact, Eren having betrayed Zeke, caused all of the Wall Titans to start marching with the intent completely wipe out all life outside of Paradis Island. Onyankopon can only helplessly watch and assume that Zeke has been defeated. After the Marleyans present are all devoured, the Pure Titans begin attacking the headquarters. Onyankopon yells at Yelena to retreat but she’s completely motionless from the idea of Zeke having lost.
The Titans continue to try and invade the headquarters, but Onyankopon and the others are saved by the Survey Corps, the Yeagerists and members of the 109th Training Corps, including Keith Shadis.
After all the Titans are killed and the remaining Marleyans retreated, the battle is declared to be over. Onyankopon is nonetheless very pessimistic at the sight of the colossal Wall Titans advancing towards the outside world. He asks Jean what Eren’s is planning, but he dully tells him that it’s exactly how he sees. Knowing that Eren is going to destroy the entire world, he wretchedly states that his homeland will also be crushed.
The Yeagerists leader, Floch Forster, commands Yelena to start assembling her Volunteers, as they are all now under arrest. Onyankopon and the rest of the Volunteers are gathered together by Floch. He proceeds to reaffirm the situation at hand, that Eren is indeed going to destroy the entire world, which does include their homelands and that their dream of restoring their lands back from Marley has broken apart, which greatly upsets Onyankopon and the others. Its only worsened when one already rebellious Volunteer decides to disobey Floch. But he makes an example of the man and shoots him multiple times in the head and jaw, horrifying Onyankopon and the rest.
Floch suggests them all to be loyal to the new Eldian Empire, and that there is nothing wrong with submission. All Volunteers are sent to jail as Floch gives them time to think about it. As Onyankopon walks with his comrades, he gloomily looks at Jean.
Onyankopon and Yelena both decide to not want to be a part of the Yeagerists’s new regime, instigating Floch to order both of them to executed.
In the following day, both Onyankopon and Yelena are placed on the roof of the headquarters. Floch being the one to kill both of them has gathered a large crowd of Yeagerists and holds a passionate speech to them, whilst Onyankopon stares at the ground in a defeated manner. Floch gives a description who the two are and the reasoning as to why they are being executed, while the jingoistic crowd yells at them. When Floch gets to Onyankopon, he still offers him a second chance as he knows that he didn’t know about the euthanasia plan, but Onyankopon begins to laugh. He retells his motivation to the crowd, that helping Paradis Island wasn’t just for them to eventually safe his homeland, but also because he genuinely cared for the people on the island. Onyankopon, knowing that the crowd are all soldiers begins judging them for propagating the same acts of viciousness that Marley did, as the crowd were forced to fight Titans to defend their own homes a couple years prior. Onyankopon calls out for Jean to do something, but he points his gun at him and shoots four times. All the four shots have missed and while Onyankopon is shaken up from what just happened. The Cart Titan appears and steals Onnyankopon along with Yelena and Jean. The Cart Titan would quickly escape from the location and transition the people somewhere in the outskirts of Shiganshina District.
Trivia
- Despite having served as a force soldier of the Marley Navy, Onyankopon is an expert pilot of flying vehicles, his skill being more useful to the Marley Air Force. He was noted by Theo Magath to be an expert pilot, able to fly vehicles such as a Marleyan military zeppelin and Hizuru's flying boat.
- It is possible that he has previously served in a nation's military's air force, either Marley's or his own country's before it was wiped off the map, and that he was subsequently transferred to the Navy for some reason, either by his own request or not, as he is fully trained in piloting airships and airplanes. He was seen serving in the Navy during the period of the Marley Mid-East War, which was mainly fought through naval battles and trench battles, making the use of airships less involved. During the war's second year, he was dispatched to join the first scouting mission to Paradis Island.
- It is also possible that he used to pilot flying vehicles unrelated to any military, but it is unknown whether any countries of the world of the series used flying vehicles as transportation for travels of civilians, at least prior the Rumbling. Any civilians using flying vehicles are likely wealthy.
- It is also unknown when and where Onyankopon learned to pilot flying vehicles, and if it happened before or during his service in the Marleyan military. It was never specified when exactly his country was conquered by Marley, if it occured during his childhood, adolescence, or early adult years.
- Onyankopon bears a strong resemblance to real-life British actor John Boyega. Boyega is a noted fan of Attack on Titan and has acknowledged the similarities between himself and Onyankopon on several occasions.
