You left me in the dust before Eren, but this time, I’m keeping up! And to make it interesting, let’s see who can slay more Titans!
~ Thomas to Eren, moments before being send out to battle.

Thomas Wagner is a minor character from the manga and anime Attack on Titan. He is a young man that enlisted in the military of the Walls and was part of the 104th Training Corps. After graduation, he participated in the Battle of Trost District.

Appearance

Thomas was a young man with short blond hair and noticeable sideburns. He had dark yellow eyes, and was typically seen wearing the customary Trainee uniform, with a white shirt under it. In his free time, he would wear a grey blouse and a long brown vest over it that was supported with a belt.

Personality

Thomas presented himself as an friendly and timid person, who could easily socialize with others, but made sure to not always make his presence known. He was also shown to be rather pessimistic, not believing that humanity was truly capable of defeating the Titans. It’s only after hearing Eren Yeager’s speech when he became much more confident and even began thinking of joining the Survey Corps.

Story

Background

Thomas was born in Trost District in the year 835 on June the 10th. Twelve years later, Thomas solicited in the military and became a member of the 104th Training Corps at southern Wall Rose.

104th Training Corps Arc

Thomas was first seen during the Cadet initiation ceremony and started being scolded by Instructor Shadis. While he has to tell his name, the instructor shouted that he should speak up and then told him he should work at a stable, instead of the military.

Thomas is seen later that day in the canteen, after he heard that Eren Yeager came from Shiganshina District, he and many other Trainees begin asking Eren questions about what he experienced. Eren reassures to Thomas that he did in fact see the Colossal Titan, shocking Thomas and the others. When Samuel asks Eren what a normal Titan looks like, the latter becomes stunned and puts his hand on his mouth from distress. Thomas and the rest become immediately still from seeing this, but Eren pretends to be fine.

He's seen a few days later, pulling Eren up to test his balance for the ODM gear straining. After Eren falls down, Thomas is tasked by his instructor to swap gear with him.

One year later in the year 848, Thomas is seen during the surveillance training mission, where the Cadets are tested to keep their vigilance in check during times of peace. He’s tasked as the group leader, together with Mikasa being the record keeper, and the other members being Reiner, Bertolt, Annie, Daz, Samuel and Nac. He’s seen discussing with Mikasa the best route to go towards so they can reach their objective. He’s then alarmed when he notices that Mikasa sensed something, but she pretends that it was nothing. Later during sunset, Daz mysteriously loses his ODM gear, despite the fact that he’s positive where he put it, which confuses Thomas and the others. But after inspecting a old campfire and wagon tracks, Reiner assumes that it must’ve been brigands who intended to steal their ODM gear so they can sell it on the black market. Thomas wonders if they are still after them and suggests the idea of returning back to their base, but Reiner denounces this, stating that they are already too close to their checkpoint, and finds it better to team-up with Marco’s group and then go back, which Mikasa agrees on.

During dawn, Thomas’s group successfully meets with the other team, after having seen a smoke signal from Armin. Annie and Mikasa apprehend the remaining two brigands who were bothering Marco's group and Daz gets his ODM gear back, hugging it passionately as Thomas comforts him.

At some unknown point during the three training years, many members of the 104th Training Corps take a snowstorm training exercise, which is intended to check the Trainees' persistence in severe climates. Thomas is in charge of a squad, which are the last to reach the base at the foot of a mountain, while Reiner notices that Christa, Ymir, and Daz are missing.

In the late year 849, the 104th Cadet Corps head to Trost District to is perform a mock defense mission in case of a second Titan attack, and Thomas takes the opportunity to visit his family. Jean's mother mentions this, showing she is familiar and acquainted with the Wagner's family.

Battle of Trost District Arc

In 850, Thomas’s training is over, and he is ranked outside of the top 10. At dinner, at Trost District, he seen talking with Eren about his decision which branch he will join, (arguing with Thomas in the anime version and with Jean in the manga and recap movie version), as Thomas listens to Eren’s motivation for joining the Survey Corps despite being in the top 10, which makes him eligible to be in the Military Police straight away. Thomas disagrees with Eren’s decision, as he believes that humanity doesn’t have a chance against the Titans, but as Eren gives a motivational and idealistic speech about the progression they got from understanding the Titans and knowledge they gained from each loss, Thomas and some other Trainees become much more hopeful. In the original manga version, and in that of the recap movie, Jean answers to Eren's speech with mockery, declaring him a deluded fool, which results in a physical fist fight between the two, whilst all the other Trainees watch, with the majority cheering on. The fight is interrupted by Mikasa lifting Eren and by Reiner, Franz, and Hannah stopping Jean.

The following morning, Thomas is atop Trost's southern wall, cleaning up artillery cannons of the Garrison with Eren, Connie, Mina, Sasha, and Samuel. After hearing Mina telling Eren that Connie has been thinking of joining the Survey Corps after hearing his words, Connie awkwardly states that it was his own decision. Thomas then tells Connie that he shouldn’t be embarrassed as he isn’t the only one, while blushing himself. Sasha suddenly walks up to them and reveals that she has stolen some meat from the officers, shocking Thomas and the others. But he becomes confused as Samuel tells her he would like a slice. The banter is quickly set aside and they go back to work. Until completely out of nowhere, the Colossal Titan appears, and a huge steam wave blows Thomas and the others from the wall. The Titan kicks a whole into the outer gate, whilst Thomas uses his 3DM gear to propel himself onto the side of the wall. Samuel falls down having hit his head onto the rubble but is saved by Sasha. Eren then yells at Thomas and the others to help him fight the Titan, but he keeps in his position being too afraid to do anything else. After the Colossal Titan disappears, Thomas goes to Eren and asks if he defeated it, but Eren tells him he didn’t as the Titan simply went up in smoke. Eren apologizes for letting it get away, only for Thomas to tell him he shouldn’t be apologizing, as he and others were to scared to move. The group is joined by Garrison officers, who send them back to the headquarters to give their report and prepare for the evacuation of civilians and to hear for instructions. As the Trainees all regroup back to HQ and the citizens gather to the inner gate, the Garrison engages the Pure Titans on the south, who begin entering the city after wiping out the whole vanguard.

Under the command of Captain Kitz Woermann, Thomas and the other Trainees are put in the middle guard and are then divided into squads, with Thomas being put into squad 34, together with Mina, Eren, Armin, Nac and Milieus. As Armin is more pessimistic, Eren sees this as a way to gain experience, with Thomas and Mina rejoicing with him and encouraging each other, Thomas even suggesting a goal for who can kill the most Titans. They get the orders to move out and as the squad advances, they notice that Titans have quickly reached the middle parts of the city. Slowly the realization of the situation begins to kick in. Out of nowhere, a jumping Abnormal Titan launches itself to the squad and as the others are capable of evading it, Thomas is caught by it, and is stuck in its mouth. They all watch in as Thomas looks at them fearfully, he is then swallowed whole by the Titan and would eventually succumb in its body.

Thomas’s death is later reported by Armin as he states the death of his squamates.

Royal Government Arc

Two months later, underneath the Reiss Chapel, Eren tearfully recalls Thomas as one of the many people that died because his father stole the Founding Titan from the royal family.

Marley Arc

After the death of Sasha, Eren recalls the moment when Sasha presented the stolen meat to Thomas and the others on top of the wall.
