~ Griez to Niccolo, insulting Sasha in front of him and her family.

Griez (first name unrevealed) is a minor antagonist in the anime/manga series Attack on Titan. He is a Marleyan soldier of the Navy made prisoner by the Eldians of Paradis Island and forced to work as a waiter at Niccolo's restaurant, a building owned by the Eldian Military. However, he is secretly a follower of Yelena and betrays his former friend Niccolo as well as the Survey Corps by selling them out to Eren Yeager and Floch Forster.

He is voiced by Jun Miyamoto in Japanese, who also voiced Hekiji Tengai from My Hero Academia, and by Stephen Fu in English, the latter having voiced Doma from Demon Slayer and Cho Sang-woo from Squid Game.

Appearance

Griez is a young man of average build with short, neatly shaved gray hair. His eyes are gray as well. He always keeps a cold, serious and almost melancholic face. He is first seen in his waiter’s suit but, after the Yeagerists arrest the Survey Corps at the restaurant, he wears a formal black jacket over a white shirt and black pants like the other Anti-Marleyan Volunteers.

Personality

Griez first appears as a calm and devoted individual, accomplishing his job as a waiter formally and respectfully. He seems to have accepted his submission to the Eldian rule.

However, he is in fact cold and calculating. He betrays Niccolo and the Survey Corps by informing Floch of their whereabouts and doesn’t show any remorse, affirming that Niccolo became too close to the Eldians. His hate of Eldia is such that he allies with Yelena and the rest of the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers (despite the fact that he is still loyal to Marley) to carry Zeke Yeager’s plan of eradication of the Subjects of Ymir.

He is also cold-blooded and quite distrustful, as he grows to assume that Niccolo's friendliness towards Eldian people automatically means he has switched allegiances and betrayed his people. He also appears to be hateful and merciless, as he has no trouble repeatedly insulting Sasha in front of her imprisoned family and an Niccolo.

History

Griez was formerly a Marleyan soldier, serving in the country's navy. Like Niccolo, he was among the numerous soldiers who were sent by ship in survey missions to Paradis Island between the years 851 and 854. He was made prisoner like the rest of his comrades, brought to the Walls, and put to work as a waiter at a restaurant in or near Trost District, where Niccolo became a cook. Niccolo would trust him so much as a friend to tell him about his love for Sasha Braus, something that is viewed as a taboo by the majority of the world, and that secretly disgusted Griez, who never gave up on his hatred for Eldians.

Starting from 853, Griez, Niccolo, and numerous other Marleyan POWs were ordered by Yelena to serve bottles of Marley's finest wine that had been brought aboard the first survey fleet back during 851. The captives were told by Yelena to serve it to all the military government's officers that would come across them. Yelena did not disclose to the POWs what was in the wine, but Niccolo would eventually grow to theorize in his mind that the wine is tainted with Zeke Yeager's spinal fluid, and that it was always a plan devised by Zeke and Yelena, and would confide said theory to Griez and possibly to other Marleyans within the Walls.

In 854, Griez serves the Marleyan wine to high-ranking MP officers of Paradis' military, including the MP Commander Nile Dok. After being ordered by Roeg to bring another bottle, he goes to the wine cellar, where he receives another one of Yelena's bottles from Niccolo.

During the crisis and growing unrest within the Walls, Griez and Niccolo receive a visit from the late Sasha Braus' parents and their adoptive family, who came as guests to eat at Niccolo's restaurant. When the elite of the Survey Corps, including their own Commander Hange, come to see Niccolo at the restaurant that same day, Griez calls Niccolo for them. While Niccolo, the Survey Corps, Onyankopon, and the Braus family are busy with their own issues, Griez gives out the Scout officers' position to the Yeagerists, resulting with them arriving at the restaurant, along with their leader, Eren Yeager himself. Griez helps them seizing the Survey Corps and the Braus family, betraying an upset Niccolo, who ends up getting arrested along with them as he realizes Griez is the one who sold them out. When confronted about his treachery, Griez claims that Niccolo has grown too close to Eldians and is losing himself, admitting that he was right not to trust him anymore.

Hange Zoë tries to warn Floch Forster about Zeke and Yelena's successful ploy to distribute wine containing Zeke's spinal fluid throughout the Walls, insisting that they are all being played by Zeke and that they need to stop him. Griez answers to her by dismissing the threat as nothing but a mere theory dreamed up by Niccolo, with Floch also sharing the same lack of concern, making it clear such threat is not a problem to him even if it is true. It is unknown if Yelena ever confided to Griez, or to any Marleyan within the Walls, that the wine indeed contains Zeke's spinal fluid, as Niccolo stated that he was not told about the contents within the bottles. When Floch silently admits that he and Eren already knew about the tainted wine, Griez's reaction is not seen, making it unclear if he was also aware.

Later, having joined the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers, who at this point have taken control of the Eldian government, Griez is seen accompanying Yelena and Onyankopon to visit the Scout officers in an underground cell beneath Shiganshina District's military headquarters, locked in the same cell as Niccolo and the Braus family. When Niccolo and Jean acknowledge that now the Volunteers are becoming the new rulers of Paradis through Zeke and Eren, Griez cuts the argument short by stating that the Eldian military has simply been beaten and lost. Niccolo calls him out on becoming Yelena's lackey and a traitor, to which Griez responds that he is not the traitor, and accuses Niccolo of being the one who betrayed Marley by sympathizing with the Eldians.

Angrily upset, with tears, and contempt, Griez begins to judge Niccolo's change of heart by insulting Sasha and Niccolo's love of her to his face, recalling how Niccolo used to talk about her every night. Unconcerned with the Braus family being present, Griez repeatedly insults Sasha and her legacy by calling her a devil, a bitch, and a whore. As Niccolo angrily attempts to grab an unfazed Griez from behind the bars, whilst being held by Jean, Griez goes on to admit how after learning Sasha finally died in Marley, he hoped that Niccolo would have gotten over it and snapped back to his senses, but seeing that Niccolo still loves her after a month has ultimately made Griez disillusioned; Niccolo is just an enemy and a traitor in his eyes now. As he is about to add more in his rant, Griez is promptly shot by Yelena in the head for being rude and disrespecting the prisoners, shocking Niccolo, Onyankopon, and the Survey Corps officers, and scaring the Braus family. Yelena apologizes in Griez's behalf, and shortly afterwards his body is covered by Onyankopon and another Volunteer, as she reveals Zeke's true endgoal.

Trivia

  • Griez’s first name is never revealed in the manga nor in the anime.
  • The day he is killed at Shiganshina, he's the very first casualty of what develops into Marley's surprise attack, the second casualty being a Yeagerist killed by Pieck. In the manga, Griez's death is shown after the death of the unnamed Yeagerist, but as Yelena meeting her prisoners and Pieck confronting Eren occur at the same time, it is unclear which victim was made first. The anime adaptation re-arranged the pacing by showing Griez's death first, then cutting to Gabi and Eren, while the Volunteers clean Griez's splattered brains offscreen. His body is taken away from the dungeon chamber before Onyankopon releases Armin's group of prisoners during the Revenge for Liberio.
    • His death during Marley's invasion and infiltration is the only one that is unrelated to the invaders and the following battle.
