~ Galliard's last words. |
Porco Galliard, who prefers being called by his last name, is a major supporting character in the manga and anime series Attack on Titan. He is a Warrior of Marley and the holder of the Jaw Titan. He is a supporting antagonist to the Eldian perspective of the story, while also being a supporting protagonist of the Marleyan perspective. He serves as a supporting protagonist in the Marley arc, while being both a supporting character and antagonist in the War for Paradis arc. He is the younger brother of the Warrior Marcel and the successor of Ymir, who in turn was Marcel's successor for the Jaw Titan. Being the third known holder of the Jaw during the story's timeline, Galliard is succeeded by Falco Grice.
He is voiced by Toshiki Masuda in the Japanese version and Kellen Goff in the English dub.
Overview
Galliard is brave and strong, but also brash, hot-headed, arrogant, rude and impulsive, with the tendence of losing focus on a mission's main objective and charge straight ahead against enemies without thinking. His bravery is well-known within the Marleyan military and he has successfully fought in many battles during the four year long Marley Mid-East War, always charging into the heat of battle, even in the war's final stages when the enemy nations bring the anti-Titan artillery into the conflict. Even his Jaw Titan form, which is similar to Marcel's, resembles a lion. In 12 years, Galliard's human physical appearance did not change much since the days he was a child soldier, retaining the same youthful appearance and a similar face as when he was younger. Galliard is extremely arrogant in his own power and abilities, trusting that his Titan powers are more than enough to keep him alive against all enemy militaries, even if they are the Survey Corps, who previously already defeated the Titan Warriors. He becomes shocked whenever he fails and gets bested, blaming his enemies or rivals and believing they used some cheap tricks to win against him.
He has a lot of pride and a bad habit of getting too overconfident and underestimating all his enemies, assuming everyone is weaker than himself or lacking any proper plans. He is shocked when his opponents are able to fight him back. As a result of his short patience, Galliard can forget to watch his own back and neglects to protect himself. His sudden rash actions cause his comrades to be caught off guard and be unable to react quickly to help him. This can result in Galliard getting massive blows and injuries from his enemies, who take advantage of his easy frustration, anger and blind eagerness to fight to strike by surprise. Mikasa Ackerman is quick to realize this personality trait of Galliard, and therefore is ready to ambush him when he sees the stolen Marleyan airship carrying the Survey Corps above Liberio. When Mikasa slices off his Titan legs, she notes she already realized in advance that Galliard was going to act carelessly upon seeing the airship and try to destroy it.
While Galliard is actually well-liked by his community and comrades and he is also friendly and supportive, his pride and ego cause him to be also unpleasant, mean and rude. He is confrontational, aggressive and quick to start arguments, and is somewhat bitter and does not take past grievances lightly. Because of this he can be unwilling to let go of grudges and forgive others, both friends and enemies alike, and wants to get the last words and laugh in any argument and fight. He brings up past conflicts and wrongs to others at any chance he gets to reprimand them. If he personally dislikes a person, he will let them know. Even when calm he is prone to use passive-aggressive language with the people he dislikes and treats others condescendingly, especially shown in his conversations with Reiner Braun.
Galliard is also thuggish and prone to violence. As a child he used to look down at weak kids and belittle them, sometimes even bully them, especially Reiner, whom he often targeted for being a useless soldier with no special talents and deemed him a loser and the worst Warrior candidate, undeserving to be even chosen as one, amongst all the other unchosen child soldiers of the Eldian Unit who were trying to become candidates. Galliard correctly insinuates that the only reason why Reiner was chosen as a candidate in place of others is because of his blind nationalism and loyalty to Marley. When Reiner talks back to him, Galliard is quick to react violently and punches him in the face, and has to be stopped by Marcel before he continues the beating.
Despite being loyal to Marley, Galliard has no faith in its government and resents how his country treats the Eldians, despite their repeated service for its military dictatorship. He tends to criticize the government's decisions and the brass' poor plans. Sometimes, his comrades have to interrupt him to avoid him saying things that might cause his superiors to question his loyalty to the nation. The only reasons why Galliard chose to join the Warrior program are to prove his strength and fighting skills and fight alongside his brother, as well as support his family for better life conditions. He is very resentful towards the Tybur family, due to them having Eldian blood, yet enjoying a luxurious lifestyle as Marleyan citizens in their many huge mansions and having countless powerful friends and allies over the entire world, from politicians and celebrities, to major newspapers. This while Galliard and his family have to live in the squallid internment zone in Liberio for being Subjects of Ymir, despite their service to Marley, while the Tyburs did nothing for a century since the Great Titan War.
Galliard has a great animosity against Marley's many enemies and has no hesitation to kill them. Despite having inherited the memories of Ymir, a fellow countrywoman, and seeing both her and his Warrior comrades befriending the people of Paradis Island, Galliard still calls them devils, although the hatred seems to come from the personal grudges of war. He despises the people of Paradis as human enemies, rather than actually believing in real human devils, and uses the insult as a slur against them, and he is sure they plan to initiate the Rumbling to destroy the world, and thus kill everyone who is dear to him. Since the begin of the Raid on Liberio, he shows open hate for the island's Eldians and vengeful feelings toward them: he especially has nothing but absolute hatred for Eren Yeager and wants to be one who kills him.
Despite his bad attitude and rudeness, Galliard is loved by his comrades and he cares deeply for them, even if he acts cold and unwelcoming to the older Warriors' friendly advances and acts tough. When he is in a great mood, he is a nice person and is openly friendly even to his fellow Warriors. He is always openly friendly to his younger comrades, the Warrior candidates, and even has more smiles for them, especially for Gabi Braun and Colt Grice. Despite her being Reiner's cousin, Galliard has no problem respecting Gabi, who shares a similar personality as his and idolizes Reiner. He is very proud of her and her extraordinary achievements in war and training, and Gabi looks up to him with great admiration. He cared greatly for his brother Marcel and developed a deeper hatred for Reiner when he learned that Marcel sacrificed his life for his sake, after Reiner was chosen to inherit a Titan in place of Porco, the latter seeing all this resulting with Marcel's unnecessary death. Only during his last moments he learns that Marcel tried to prevent him from being selected as a Warrior in order for him to have a chance at a long life, resulting with him being overcome with emotion.
Galliard is very close friends with Pieck Finger and the two fought in many battles by each other's side. Pieck often refers to him with the affectionate nickname "Pock", which Galliard finds irritating. Despite being non-Subject of Ymir Marleyans, the five young soldiers of the Panzer Unit treat Galliard and the other Warriors as equal comrades and they are friendly to them, Carlo personally thanking Galliard for saving his life when he repels a Survey Corps attack against him. He shows panic and anger when Pieck and his War Chief Zeke Yeager are defeated by the Survey Corps and is driven by blind rage when he gets confirmation that his comrade Bertolt Hoover was eaten alive by the enemy in order for Paradis' military to steal his Colossal Titan and use it to destroy Marley's primary military naval fleet. He rushes against Eren in blind rage against Pieck's pleas, leaving her, the Panzer Unit and Zeke more vulnerable to the Survey Corps's attacks and giving them openings, as well as putting himself to danger.
As he keeps engaging Eren and Mikasa, he ignores the multiple chances to back away from the Attack Titan before the latter manages to seize him with Mikasa's assistance and use him to steal the War Hammer Titan. Despite resenting the Tybur family, Galliard screams in horror when he unwillingly kills Lara Tybur after failing to aid her in battle, also being responsible for the loss of the War Hammer due to his short temper and easy frustration. Galliard almost never talks about his predecessor Ymir and rarely brings up which of her memories he saw; he claims to almost feel sorry for her, especially for having to carry the name of the hated first Titan ancestor, and calls her a pathetic woman, which is his own crude way to say he feels sorry for Ymir and the miserable petty life she had.
Galliard was always at odds with Reiner since childhood, where Reiner was often a target of his bullying. The dislike for Reiner increased when the latter was chosen to inherit the Armored Titan in his place, wounding Galliard's ego in the process. Ever since learning that Marcel died for Reiner's sake, Galliard develops a strong hatred for him and deems him cowardly and incompetent, relying on those around him to save him from deadly situations. Reiner instead completely abandons any hostility he had for him during childhood. Galliard also accuses Reiner of basing his "soldier" persona in Paradis' Walls off of Marcel, further increasing his animosity towards him. During childhood, Pieck, Marcel and Bertolt always defended Reiner from Galliard's bullying, and even in present day Pieck continues to do so. After his great failure and mistakes during the Raid on Liberio, Galliard becomes less hostile and more affable to Reiner, treating him as an equal comrade and no longer judging him after being the one who caused Eren's gain of the War Hammer Titan and the death of the Panzer Unit, as well as almost causing his own death and Marley's loss of the Jaw Titan, if not for Reiner rushing to save Galliard's life upon Gabi and Falco Grice's cries for help. Still, on Galliard's side the rivalry remained until his death, where he proclaimed his superiority over Reiner upon finally learning the only reason he was not chosen as a Warrior was because of Marcel's interference, much to the relief of his ego.
In his last moments, Galliard shows to be sympathetic to his friend Colt's desperate attempt to save the life of his little brother Falco. Colt never hid the fact he did not want him to become a Warrior, but Falco only pushed himself for Gabi's sake under the pretext of wanting to prove his family's innocence to the nation, despite Colt already doing that. During his last moments, Colt pleads with the traitor Zeke to leave Falco out of the conflict. As this happens right after he learned of Marcel's attempt to secure him a long life, Galliard thinks of his older brother when Colt tries to save Falco, and after the former willingly loses his life to Falco's transformation into a mindless Titan by Zeke, Galliard decides to give Falco a second chance at life.
Despite Reiner already choosing to save Falco by letting himself get devoured, Galliard refuses to let it happen and claims to have used up all his power's strength to heal from the heavy injuries received from Eren, and thus he wants to be one to let Falco devour him to inherit the Jaw. However, it is known that Intelligent Titans are hard to kill and are capable to survive even extremely deadly and exhausting injuries, Ymir being a weaker Jaw Titan than Galliard surviving the destruction of her intestines while being exhausted and unable to heal for many minutes or more. So it is implied that Galliard used the fact he was going to "die" of his injuries anyway as an excuse to cover the fact he just chose to sacrifice his own life for Reiner, who does not seem to believe that Galliard would die from his wounds and screams at him to stop when Falco eats him.
Along with his brother Marcel, Bertolt, Ymir, Tom Ksaver, Grisha Yeager and Eren Kruger, Galliard is one of the deceased Titans from Marley who are freed from Ymir Fritz and Eren's control by Zeke and help the allied forces of Marley and the Survey Corps to save humanity by stopping the Rumbling and killing Eren. As temporarily resurrected Jaw Titans, Galliard, Marcel and Ymir fight side by side, Galliard assisting Pieck in battle, whilst Marcel and Ymir and save Reiner once again and Bertolt helps Annie Leonhart. Galliard's parents are among the many people who escaped Liberio before the Rumbling reached it and both survive the events of the Battle of Heaven and Earth against the Doomsday Titan. After being briefly transformed into Pure Abnormal Titans, Galliard's parents return human right after Eren's death and Ymir's soul leaving the world and both continue living in the end of the series.

Trivia
- Galliard inherited Ymir's memories, but never shares them with anyone, like Armin refuses to share Bertolt's. As Ymir frequently used to hang around Historia, Reiner and Bertolt, Galliard judged Reiner's behavior during his infiltration years and correctly insinuated that Reiner was imitating his brother Marcel's personality. Despite seeing memories of the trainees within the Walls, Galliard still calls the people of the Walls devils, although it is likely due to the heat of battle, his rage on his enemies invading his hometown and hurting his loved ones and killing Bertolt, rather than genuine ignorance. Also other than Historia, Sasha and the two Warriors, Ymir didn't have many friends, due to her personality. And Ymir, being a Marleyan Eldian, is not one of the 'island devils'. Also Galliard showed nothing but hatred for Eren and doesn't know much about him, as Ymir wasn't close to him, Mikasa and Armin. During the Raid on Liberio, Galliard recognized Mikasa by sight, likely from Ymir's memories.
- Galliard shares similar personality traits with pre-timeskip Eren Yeager and Gabi Braun. Also due to his role of being Reiner's rival during the military training days, similar to Eren's animosity with Jean Kirstein, some readers and watchers referred to him as "Jean, but worse".
- "Porco" is a Portuguese and Italian word that translates to "pig." In the languages' slang, the word is used to describe a repulsive, perverted, unpleasant or immoral person. His surname and personal preferred name to be addressed with, "Galliard", resembles the French word "gaillard," meaning "brave, cheerful, spirited".
- Sketches of Galliard included in the Attack on Titan: Final Manga Exhibition revealed that a working name for him was Horst Galliard.
