~ Commander Pixis
If we humans go extinct, it won't be because we were eaten by Titans! It'll be because we killed ourselves off! We cannot afford to die any further inside. I kindly ask of you! Please die here!
~ Pixis motivating his troops of the Garrison and Trainees.

Commander Dot Pixis is a supporting character in the manga series Attack on Titan and its anime television series adaption. He is the highest ranking commander of the Garrison and the Chief Official of the Southern Territories of the Walls of Paradis Island. He is given full authority when it comes to defense. Having spent most of his life as completely loyal to the Crown, Pixis is one of the military leaders who overthrow the royal government of the Walls in 850 to estabilish military rule to defend the people from the invaders from outside.

During 854, following a month after a raid on Marley against the Eldian military's wishes, Pixis becomes the Premier General of the Three Military Branches, succeeding Darius Zackly, who actually led all of Paradis and its military administration in behalf of Queen Historia's nominal only rule, until he is assassinated by the Yeagerists. Pixis's rule over the Walls, however, lasts only a few days before meeting his fate during Marley's surprise attack on Paradis' Walls known as the Revenge for Liberio. Having ingested Zeke Yeager's spinal fluid, Pixis is transformed into a Pure Titan by Zeke and is finally killed by Armin Arlert after rampaging on both the Marleyan and Eldian soldiers for the rest of the battle.

He is voiced by Masahiko Tanaka in the Japanese version and by R. Bruce Elliott in the English version.

Overview

Dot Pixis is the elderly and most important Garrison commander within the Walls. He is one of the oldest officers of the military, along with his old comrade and superior Darius Zackly, but almost nothing is known about his background. He is known to be eccentric and very intelligent, as well as an effective leader. All the soldiers of the regiments respect him greatly, and even the members of the royal government trust him easily. An expert strategist, even during times of crisis and chaos Pixis is able to retain his calm demeanor and a light-hearted mood. He is a heavy drinker who loves many types of alcoholic drinks, especially wine, to the point that sometimes his aid Anka has to confiscate all beverages from him for a while.

Pixis claims to be a sore loser who cannot stand defeat and hates losing more than anything. He hates giving up and is quick to love the similar stubborness and persitence in Eren Yeager. He says the idea of giving up to the Titans makes him sick, showing his determination to attempt to defeat them at any cost and save humanity. Pixis dreamed all his life he could see humanity within the Walls make progress and advancement against the Titans, and only during 850 he finally lives to see its first victory. During the same year he also finds out the reason why his people never made any significant advancement for a century is because the royal government prevented it and destroyed or kept secret any kind of new technology and discovery, in order to ensure that humanity within the Walls may never leave its intended cage. Pixis always wished for humanity to stop fighting each other and be united, although he knew perfectly this was something impossible. After learning the truth of the world, he wishes that at least Eldia could unite as one for a bright future.

Pixis can also understand the issues and sufferings of others, as he allows soldiers to choose to refuse to participate in the risky attempt to recapture Trost District by using Eren's newly discovered Titan power, because he understands the extreme amounts of terror and fear in those soldiers. However, as the military leader responsible to defend all the southern territories he also quiets them all down and before allowing them to mutiny he gives his troops a speech about the fate of humanity within the Walls and how all their families will experience the same terror the soldiers did at Trost. He reminds the soldiers what will happen if the Armored Titan destroys Wall Rose as well; the humans of Wall Rose and Wall Sheena will go into a civil war against each other over territory and land, because the regions of Sheena and the Interior are not large enough to feed all the inhabitants of the Walls. Pixis reminds his troops about the fate of the majority of the refugees from Wall Maria who survived the Titan invasion by fleeing into Rose; one year later in 846 all the healthy adult ones were forcibly enlisted into the Survey Corps by the royal government into a false recapture mission of Wall Maria, which resulted with almost the entire population of humans of Maria being wiped out, allowing for the humans within the Walls to survive and preventing any conflict. Using these facts, Pixis successfully convinces all his troops to keep fighting and take part into the attempt to retake Trost to prevent a worse fate within the Walls.

The commander has very good judgement and knows when to trust others or not, as shown by the results of his choice of trusting Armin Arlert's vouch for Eren, while not trusting Zeke Yeager and Yelena. He correctly points out that his subordinate captain, Kitz Woermann, who was in charge of Trost's defenses in his absence, is not fit to have full command under extremely stressful situations, as Woermann gave in to fear for the worst and started acting pessimistic and rashly by trying to eliminate any perceived threat without considering other aspects. Although Woermann is right to to deem Eren's power too risky, and most soldiers agree with him, Pixis instead knows when to it is worth to take risks, especially when humanity within the Walls is already about to be destroyed anyway. This leads to his decision to vouch for Eren's safety and use his Titan power to stop the breach at Trost's gate caused by the Colossal Titan. Always with his good judgement of character, Pixis puts the Team Leader Ian Dietrich in charge of the Garrison's alpha squad meant to protect Eren, which in the end proves to be a wise move, as the other two potential choices for leadership, Rico Brzenska and Mitabi Jarnach, wanted to abort the mission as soon as Eren failed to control his power in his first attempt. Pixis' leadership and choice to give Ian command result in victory and Trost being recovered, although in reality the Warriors of Marley simply chose to allow Eren and the military to win.

Like the rest of the military, Commander Erwin Smith holds Pixis in high respect and shares some of the same sentiments as him about the situation of the Walls' society. Because the Garrison often allies itself with the Survey Corps to protect humanity from the Titans, Erwin always keeps Pixis updated and informed with all the new discoveries the Scouts make in their struggles. Armin notes that Pixis is one of the men who is able to sacrifice his humanity in order to bring change to the world, Pixis himself stating he is willing to be a butcher if it can bring humanity's survival. However, Pixis is the only leader who is truly completely driven by the desire to see humanity thrive, without having any other personal agendas, unlike the other top branch commanders.

Overall the three main leaders of the military and their general represent what their respective branches are mainly known for by reputation; Pixis values the safety and longevity of humanity within the Walls and its protection more than anything else, which is the Garrison's main objective, while Erwin and Keith Shadis's primary objectives are to bring change to society and find out the truth and history of the world and to personally see the unknown vast lands outside the Walls, even if it might result with a worse fate for their people and bring collapse and chaos to society. These are main primary reasons why many join the Survey Corps, who are driven by a desire for freedom and change. And the Commander Nile Dawk prioritizes the safety of his loved ones before anything else and wants to keep his wife and daughters safe, self-interest and self-preservation being the main traits of the Military Police. The General of the Three Regiments, Darius Zackly, is publicly known as an impartial dutiful man who values the law and the benefits of human society before anything else, representing the duties of the Walls' military overall. However, Pixis always suspected that even Zackly in reality prioritizes himself and his desires over his duty and is not interested in humanity's future at all, having a personal vendetta against the royal assembly of the Interior, whom he served loyally for most of his life.

Unlike Erwin and Zackly, who are both ready to overthrow the royal Reiss government from the start, Pixis objects against such plans and tells Erwin it is not his right for them to decide to change the system and risk a civil war without being completely sure the actual rulers are not fit to protect humanity within the Walls. To Pixis it does not matter if the government's nobles are greedy and selfish, so long as they are capable and willing to save the people they rule over, especially when they know the secrets of the Walls and how they are built, and even more about the history of humanity and the Titans. Only after their refusal to let the people of Wall Rose enter Wall Sheena, Pixis decides to back Erwin and Zackly for a coup d'état to have the military seize power and control of the government and put one of their own soldiers as the ruler in name under the pretext of her being a member of the true royal family of Reiss.

Pixis values the fate of humanity within the Walls over his own life and is not guided by other goals such as vengeance or learning the truth of the world, and he expresses disdain towards both Erwin and Zackly for their selfish goals. He would have opposed their uprising if their decisions went against humanity's survival. Had the government of Rod Reiss and his puppet nobleman King Fritz been the more favorable choice to defend the Walls' people, Pixis admits he would have backed them and the Interior Police to fight against Zackly and Erwin's subordinates with the Garrison, which outnumbers the other military branches of the Walls. Instead Erwin's successor commander of the Survey Corps, Hange Zoë, shares more similar selfless views as Pixis, to the point she values the future and lives of all of humanity outside the Walls, regardless how they feel about her and the people from her island. However, she hates her duty and misses the days she was simply a Titan researcher wanting to discover the truth of the world and explore the outside.

Despite his beliefs, Pixis has not been able to adapt quickly to the change of society within the Walls following the reveal of the truth of the world and how he and his people are the remnants of the fallen and despised cruel nation Eldia, whose ruthless custom and historical feats earned the enmity of the majority of the world and a great grudge with deep wounds. Like most of the Eldian military brass, Pixis has not been able to bring any solution for the defense and future of Paradis Island against the much more advanced human society in the outside world. From 851 onwards Pixis, Hange, and the rest of the military government entirely depend on a group of mutineer Marleyan soldiers calling themselves Anti-Marleyan Volunteers, who offer to free the Eldian people by trying to change society by defeating the world's superpower Marley in war, but they are led by an officer of the Marleyan military who is responsible for two massacres within the Walls; the Warrior War Chief Zeke Yeager. This caused an uneasy alliance between the Eldians and the Volunteers, with the Scouts being the one closest to them.

Even so, Pixis has to learn that political alliances between nations are never made out of charity and there needs to be a personal gain in exchange of their support, and no politician will even bother to travel to Paradis Island, unless there is some personal benefit for them or their country, as shown by Hizuru demanding to have monopoly of the island's resources, whose true value as fossil fuel is not even known and understood by the Eldians, unlike the rest of the world. The Azumabito reject Paradis' government's request to help the island offer trade of its resources with other nations, as Hizuru's priority is to restore itself to glory and holds personal plans of expansion. To Pixis and the rest of the military's ignorance, Kiyomi also fears the risk of Eldia growing too strong and abusing the Rumbling to hurt the people outside, and thus bluntly states to Zeke in private that if the restoration of Eldia will put the world in danger in any way, she and her country will immediately side with Marley to defend humanity outside the Walls and confess to the Marleyan government all the plans of Paradis.

Pixis also has constant mistrust for Zeke and the Volunteers, even after 3 years of support and technological advancement, and fears an untold personal agenda by them, and most of the military feels the same way he does. This mistrust becomes stronger following the Raid on Liberio in Marley in 854, which is caused by Zeke and Yelena bringing Eren to move on his own against the military and government's wishes. Quickly after the return of the Survey Corps from Marley and the detainment of Eren and the Marleyan POWs Gabi Braun and Falco Grice, Pixis summons all the Volunteers, without informing Hange and all the Scouts, and orders to have them all put on house arrest in separate locations, Levi Ackerman holds custody of Zeke. While Eren's friends view this decision as extreme, Pixis' judgement proves to be correct when the leader of the Volunteers, Yelena, admits to have been the one who met Eren in private without permission several months ago, shortly before Hange and her team travelled to Marley seeking peace, to convince him to get on board with Zeke's cause. With his ability to tell how honest people are, Pixis is quick to deduce that Yelena is not telling the whole truth of her reasons, even after he spends much time interrogating her, but he and Hange confirm that the other Volunteers might be innocent. Pixis also interrogates the prisoner Eren, only to be met with complete silence, resulting with Pixis completely losing any faith in him.

With the assassination of the Premier Darius Zackly and the uprising of the Yeagerists under the support of the population's majority, Armin Arlert recommends Pixis to be put in charge of Eldia and deems him the only one who can lead the nation. Thus Pixis is hastily made into Zackly's successor as the General of the Three Branches and becomes the government's leader. The commander decides to negotiate peace with the Yeagerists by using Zeke's secret location and has Queen Historia kept into hiding, while he pretends to offer an alliance with Eren and the rebels. In reality and without informing the Survey Corps, who are too close to Eren, Pixis wants Eren to be fed to another Titan to put an end to the uprising before the government loses control to Zeke and Yelena's ploy. Pixis sends an offer of peace to the Yeagerists, promising them to reveal Zeke's location if they accept, but also secretely informs his subordinates of the Garrison that he plans to have Eren killed. He sends a message to Levi, informing him of Zackly's death and that he now controls the military, and that Levi must be the one to feed Eren to any soldier of his choice. This plan is ruined by some of Pixis' own subordinates, who reveal themselves to be Yeagerists or their allies forced to comply and inform their leaders Eren and Floch Forster of Pixis' intentions.

Knowing Pixis will never entrust the fate of Eldia to them, Eren and his Yeagerists refuse his false peace offer and instead, with the aid of the Marleyan POW Griez they find and capture Commander Hange and her team, forcing her to escort them to Zeke and Levi's location. Pixis, Nile, and the majority of the top brass of the Eldian military in power find out they have been drinking tainted Marleyan wine containing Zeke's spinal fluid for years, ever since the Volunteers came to Paradis with the Marleyan first scouting fleet. It was a backup plan made by Zeke in case the military was going to decide to kill him, executed by Yelena and the war captive Marleyan soldiers living in Paradis as civilians. Eren and Floch were informed by Yelena of this plan months ago in advance, while all the other Volunteers were kept in the dark for years.

With this knowledge, Pixis quickly loses control of the government to Yelena and the Yeagerists, who seize political power within the Walls and detain all of Eldia's leaders and their loyalists and release all the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers from their house arrest to join their side. On their demands and at gunpoint of his own traitor subordinates, Pixis is forced to comply and gathers all the heart of the military at Shiganshina District, where he orders all the military regiments to surrender to the Yeager brothers, resulting with their arrest and the successful coup by the Yeagerists.

Having enjoyed the help of the Volunteers from the Marleyan continent for three years, Pixis held a certain amount of respect and gratitude for them, despite them being non-Eldian outsiders and Zeke's followers. For these years Yelena served as the mediator between Zeke and the Eldians, while the Warrior was still serving in the Marley army and fighting in the Mid-East. As part of his ability to read people, Pixis noticed that something was not right about Yelena, and he and the rest of the brass have always been aware that she has some degrees of insanity, and part of this was the reason why Pixis decided to put her and the other Volunteers on house arrest as soon as Zeke arrived on Paradis from Marley. The main reasons for the Volunteers' detainment were Pixis' own fear of Yelena and Zeke having a hidden motive and the Raid on Liberio. Individually and outside of business, Pixis liked Yelena and complimented both her actions and appearance. However, he developed a greater distrust for her when she admitted to have secretely gone to interact with Eren in private and getting him on board with Zeke's plan, all without Paradis' authorization and the knowledge of the other Volunteers, resulting with the Liberio massacre in Marley. Pixis' initial suspicion of Yelena before this also proved to be well-funded when he found out she and her captive comrades served the Eldians tainted wine for years.

Pixis's respect for Yelena was mutual on her side. When the Eldian government started acting against Zeke and Eren and their supporters a month before the Yeagerist uprising, Yelena promised she and Pixis were going to dine at the same table soon, which was a subtle warning about Pixis and his comrades having drunk the Marleyan wine with Zeke's spinal fluid. When the military finds out about the wine, Pixis is forced to do everything Yelena tells him, controlling Paradis on Zeke's behalf. Despite all this, the leader of the rebels Zeke was intially still under Levi's captivity, even after causing the deaths of all Levi's 30 wine-marked subordinates in a forest of giant trees south of Shiganshina outside the Walls. Zeke's escape is caused by him overhearing Pixis's plan to kill Eren and Levi taking the initiative; Levi sent his reply to Pixis, informing him that he was going to kill Zeke as well and not only Eren, and both of them will be fed to Pure Titans to other soldiers. Levi holding Zeke hostage against Eren, the Yeagerists and Volunteers ruling the island was the last chance for Pixis to regain control, but Zeke personally takes care of his obstacle by freeing himself and blowing up Levi.

When Yelena invites him to have lunch with her, Onyankopon, and the other Volunteers, Pixis does not touch any of the food. All the Eldians who drank Zeke's wine without knowing any of the schemes of the Yeagers are marked with black armbands, while other officers who drank it but were forced to support the Yeagers and betray the military in secret wear red armbands, and have been given advantages, a chance to join the rebels or continue their free lives. All military members who wear white armbands are the ones who became Yeagerists from the beginning, without drinking any wine. Pixis notes how this is all like Marley does things when it conquers other nations and gives different armbands for members their militaries to distinguish people who joined Marley in advance, the ones who were forced to comply, and the ones who are Subjects of Ymir.

The relationship between Pixis and Yelena became hostile as soon as Yelena discovered that Pixis and the Eldian military always planned all along to have Zeke killed immediately after he set foot on Paradis. Ever since this knowledge, Yelena treats Pixis with disdain and criticizes the Eldians, Pixis and Levi for answering Zeke's "kindness" with constant hostility, mistrust and ungratefulness and repeated attempts to kill him, even after he had the Volunteers and Lady Azumabito help the island to develop its technology and have a chance for a future. Yelena mocks Pixis' decision to not align with the Volunteers and tells him that the government of Paradis only tried to prevent the entire world from being saved from war and destruction. Pixis is confused by this, as the small-scale Rumbling will save only the island and will not do any difference to improve the other countries, thus wonders what Zeke's ulterior motive might be. On Zeke's behalf, however, Yelena refuses to provide any answers to him, as she no longer views anyone who tries to kill Zeke, like Pixis and Levi, as friends. She tells the commander it is too late for him to have a chance to join Zeke's cause. Instead she promises him there will be consequences for him, as he earned the wrath of Zeke, the "God who will save the world". Defeated by Zeke and Eren and without any authority left, Hange concludes that the fate of Eldia must be entrusted to Pixis and Armin.

During Marley's surprise attack on Paradis Island known as the Revenge for Liberio, Pixis gathers all the troops and commands them to join forces with the Yeagerists, whose majority gets massacred by the Marleyan troops. Despite the military's resentment towards the Yeagerists and the Marleyan guests on the island, Eren and Zeke are still needed for Eldia's survival, the former having the Founder and the latter being the only available Titan with royal blood. Lacking enough supplies of 3DMG Gear Pixis orders to give it all to the soldiers who did not drink the enemy's wine, while all those who did fight the Marleyan soldiers afoot or riding horses. While Zeke rescues Eren and the Eldians by destroying Marley's air force and holding off the Warriors and land troops, Pixis personally sends mounted Garrison soldiers to engage the Marleyans hiding inside the city's buildings, while Nile and his men of the MP fight afoot.

Pixis spends his final moments drinking wine, knowing he has been outsmarted by Zeke and Yelena. When Marley starts regaining the upper hand in the battle, Zeke decides to turn all the Eldian soldiers who drank his wine into his personal Titans to control as weapons. Despite Eren and Colt Grice's attempts to convince him to stop, Zeke screams to summon his Titans. Pixis sees his and his men's bodies begin to glow and, realizing what this means, resigns himself to his fate as he is transformed into a Pure Titan. This event signs the begin of the end of the old rule of the military and its branches, leaving the loyalist soldiers almost without leadership. In the anime adaptation, Pixis' escort Anka is confirmed to have fallen, possibly eaten or crushed by her own Titanized comrades or killed by the Marleyan soldiers.

When the Walls crumble, Zeke's disappear, and the Doomsday Titan heads south, Pixis and his mutated comrades are left free to rampage in Shiganshina, without having any walls preventing them from heading to other places. The Titans start to devour Yeagerists and soldiers and swarm the city's military headquarters. As the Marleyan Warrior Falco Grice inherited the power of the Jaw Titan, Jean Kirstein considers feeding the boy to Pixis's Titan to save the old commander, but Armin objects against committing more violence, while Connie Springer argues that he wishes to bring back his Titanized mother. Jean rallies all the surviving loyalist soldiers and Yeagerists together for a counterattack to kill all the Titans, and during the purge, Pixis's Pure Titan is spotted by Armin, Mikasa Ackerman and Jean. Armin recalls the old times during the Battle of Trost District when he and Mikasa were still together with Eren, and Pixis had guaranteed for their safety and was the first important person to trust Eren. Armin expresses gratitude for Pixis's guidance as he fires a Thunder Spear, killing him.

Trivia

  • In 2010, Attack on Titan 's creator Hajime Isayama posted a blog post admitting that Commander Pixis was modeled after General Yoshifuru Akiyama, a general in the Imperial Japanese Army, of whom Isayama said "I respect for leading such a simple and frugal life." This brought a large controversy resulting to an Internet flame war regarding the general's military actions, specifically, though not exclusively, in Korea. With the start of the anime adaptation in 2013, the controversy included death threats against the mangaka, from sectors of the population where Yoshifuru is deeply hated. The death threats continued for years.
  • Isayama has claimed that it has been so long since Pixis lost his hair that no one remembers what color it was.
  • Isayama confirmed that Pixis is married and has multiple children. Due to his age, he likely is a grandfather of multiple children as well.
