Sato (サトー) is a character introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.

Personality & Character

Sato is a ZAFT soldier loyal to the former PLANT chairman Patrick Zala to eliminate all Naturals, after the lost of his girlfriend and daughter in the Bloody Valentine Incident. Blind with rage and hatred, he refuses to accept PLANT's truce after the end of the First EA-PLANT War and decided to destroy all Naturals by dropping a wreckage of Junius Seven to Earth to avenge his family and the previous chairmen.

History

After losing his girlfriend, Christy, and his daughter in the Bloody Valentine Incident, and his comrade-in-arms Alan in the First Alliance-PLANT War, he borne a strong hostility towards Naturals. For this reason, he does not approve of PLANT's policy of maintaining the truce, and agrees with Patrick Zala's idea of destroying the Naturals. Together with a group of ZAFT deserters who share similar ideas, they plot to eliminate the Naturals by dropping a wreckage of the Junius Seven, the location of the incident that started the war, onto the Earth.^[1]

Sato and his group piloted their GINN High Maneuver Type IIs and interfered with the ZAFT troops who tried to crush the Junius Seven's wreckage in order to limit the damage to Earth. Sato fights against Shinn Asuka and Athrun Zala, who were participating in the crushing operation and the elimination of the interference, and tries to stop the final crushing operation that Athrun was about to carry out.^[2] However, Shinn prevented him from taking Athrun with him, and Sato was killed when his mobile suit crashes into the wreckage of the Junius Seven as it falls to Earth.

Legacy

Although he didn't know that Patrick Zala's son, Athrun (aboard the ZAKU Warrior), was among the enemy's forces preventing the Junius Seven's wreckage from falling, Sato's comments were a shock to Athrun and became a major factor in his decision to join the ZAFT forces. Lacus Clyne later discovers that all of Sato's ZAFT files have been erased by an unknown party.^[3]

Notes & Trivia

• While never directly stated, several scenes heavily imply that Sato and the terrorists had been manipulated behind the scenes by Gilbert Durandal, who was also suggested to have been the one responsible for purging Sato's data.^[3]
  • Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny Astray took this a step further, as when Bernadette Leroux reported her findings of the terrorist attack, Durandal was only surprised when he had heard about a small team of renegades attempting to take control of the Junk Guild's GENESIS Alpha.^[4]
• In Super Robot Wars L, Sato deploys a squad of Taurus Mobile Dolls during the Junius Seven drop. He also claims that he shares the same ideas with Quinze and Dekim Barton.
