Gerard Garcia (ジェラード・ガルシア) is a character introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. He is the current commander of Artemis, a space fortress owned by the Eurasian Federation.

Personality & Character

Being the commander of an impenetrable fortress has made Garcia a complacent man who has total faith that no one will ever be able to penetrate the "Umbrella of Artemis." Garcia is an ambitious man who is willing to subtly break treaty regulations to obtain that which could advance his position. He is also extremely arrogant and short-sighted, with him attacking Kira because he didn't like him, even called him a "traitorous coordinator" for cooperating with the Earth Alliance.[1] He was apparently dissatisfied with his position as Artemis commander, which had little strategic value and was lost in his attempts to get a promotion.

History

First Alliance-PLANT War

Gerard participated in the Grimaldi Front, under the command of Commodore Villard. During the Battle of Endymion Crater, Villard's unit was forced to retreat, but was able to witness Mu La Flaga's act of defeating five ZGMF-1017 GINNs before fully withdrawing. After the battle, he was reassigned to the space fortress Artemis.[1]

When the Atlantic Federation's newly constructed assault carrier Archangel arrived at Artemis, he locked down the ship to keep the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam and its pilot Kira Yamato in his employ. Garcia's plan was interrupted when a sneak attack by ZAFT forces' Nicol Amalfi and his GAT-X207 Blitz Gundam damaged the asteroid fortress. Nicol's teammates eventually joined in the attack, and Garcia was seemingly killed when a wrecked TS-MA2 Moebius crash into his ship.[1] However, Garcia somehow survived, albeit with some injuries. Sometime later, he hired mercenary Gai Murakumo to protect the fortress before attempting to take him and the MBF-P03 Gundam Astray Blue Frame for his own use. This plan was foiled when Gai received help from Lowe Guele.[2]

Later, Garcia become the commander of the newly created Task Force X, a special experimental unit meant to help the Eurasian Federation develop their Mobile Suit, the Hyperion. He sent Canard Pars to search for Kira, the only successful Ultimate Coordinator, but when he learned of the existence of the YMF-X000A Dreadnought Gundam, he ignored his original plan, ordered the machine to be secured, and caused a commotion by taking over ReHome. When Prayer Reverie surrendered with the machine, he reported with great enthusiasm, but the Eurasian Command, which was trying to ride to victory, informed him that all Eurasian MS development plans had been frozen due to the decision to strengthen their alliance with the Atlantic Federation and deploy the Dagger series, and the unit was disbanded. Garcia, who had forgotten his original goal, was shunned and told that he was too slow to succeed. Garcia tried to detain Canard for "failing to achieve results" (although this was partly due to his annoyance at being disbanded by the command center), but Task Force X, in response, escaped from the Eurasian Federation and conducted a raid against the Atlantic Federation lunar base in order to obtain the Neutron Jammer Canceller. Afterward, he was held responsible for the raid, and in order to save his own skin, he tried to blame Gai for the escape of Task Force X and had him fight Hyperion Unit 3, but Gai had already prepared a countermeasure, having previously engaged Unit 1 with Canard aboard, so he failed.
