“ | It's been ages since I joined the military and seen what the Feds are capable of. They're out there doing whatever the hell they want to whoever they want. You oppress people long enough, they're gonna fight back. | ” |
—Alfee Zydos explains to Kneeland LeSean why he has no sympathy towards the Earth Federation.[3] |
“ | It's our home. Win or lose, we gotta let the young ones go home, back to their families, and their loved ones. That's your job, Rolph. | ” |
—Alfee Zydos's encouraging words to a broken Rolph Ronet in bringing his troops back to Space.[4] |
Alfee Zydos (アルフィー・ザイドス(ギアヘッド) Arufī Zaidosu (Gia heddo)?) is a character of Mobile Suit Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance.[2]
Background
Known as Gearhead to his friends and peers, Zydos is the chief mechanic who volunteered to work at the Zeon's mobile weapon recycling centre set up by the Brigade Support Command in the vicinity of Mediaș, Sibiu county, central Romania.[3] Managed by Maj. Rolph Ronet, Zydos leads a team of mechanics which specializes in dismantling damaged mobile weapons from the frontline and reserving useful parts to keep the already stretched supply lines going. Zydos is a long time friend of Iria Solari and her Red Wolf Squadron's subordinates.[3]
Personality & Character
Zydos has a curious mind who thirst for knowledge on how things works. Once he knows Yuri Kellerne assigns Solari to steal and examine the enemy's mobile suit, he takes the opportunity without hesitation.[5]
Zydos always brings a sense of calm and humor with him whenever he goes. He relates his tremendous knowledge and experience on war and everyday life in a down-to-earth manner which often makes everyone at ease and earns him the trust and respect among his peers. Another trait that makes Zydos an excellent communicator is his display of strong empathy, always wiling to listen and lend a helping hand to those who are heartbroken or crestfallen. Whether it is his friend Solari or his boss Maj. Ronet, Zydos's words of encouragement are their beacons of hope and they are no doubt to be grateful to have a true friend like him.
Being in the military for a long time, Zydos has experienced and witnessed first hand the brutality of the Earth Federation towards its people and anyone else. He holds dear to the view of Zeon as the oppressed Spacenoids and must fight for their independence, even if it means being invaders in the eyes of the Federation.[3] Zydos keeps his view dormant most of the time but when the right moment comes he will let it all out, such as his wanton destruction of E.F.F.'s mobile suits and tanks with his stolen GM was his way of extracting revenge towards the oppressive Earth Federation[5].
Skills & Abilities
Zydos processes outstanding skills in mobile suit maintenance, to the extent that he can restore Solari's and LeSean's reconstructed Zaku IIs with the performance no different from the regular units.[6] His deep knowledge in mechanics complements his adequate mobile suit piloting skill as he is able to pilot the stolen GM with ease and destroy E.F.F.'s mobile weapons swiftly.[5]
History
One Year War
European Front
As an experienced engineer in mobile weapon maintenance, Tech. Capt. Alfee Zydos volunteered to work at Brigade Support Command's recycling centre run by Maj. Rolph Ronet in central Romania during the One Year War. As the EFF began to systematically suppress Zeon's strongholds across Eastern Europe in later half of U.C. 0079, Zydos was surprised to be reunited with Cpt. Iria Solari and 1st Lt. Kneeland LeSean of the Red Wolf Squadron, who were seeking refuge along with other Zeon escapees from Federation's surprise raid at the Cluj-Napoca military base only days ago. Despite the Major's initial objection and after much persuasion from Zydos, Solari and co. were allowed to stay at the recycling centre. Sensing the junkyard-like centre would be the next Federal target after the annihilation of nearby Mediaș military base, the Red Wolf captain convinced her old friend and the resident mechanics corps to quickly assemble two functionable Zaku IIs from salvaged parts so she and LeSean have the means to fight against the impending EFF attacks. No sooner than the Zakus were completed, the EFF mounted a surprised raid at the recycling centre, with Solari and LeSean put the newly-built Zakus in action against the intruding RX-78(G)E Gundam EX and RGM-79 GM. The combined efforts of the Red Wolf duo and their comrades saw off the enemy but the recycling centre suffered significant loss of lives and infrastructural damage. Zydos encouraged the disheartened Maj. Ronet not to give up on the hope to bring his troop back to the Zeon homeland in Space, and the Major was grateful for the former's empathy and was finally back on his feet again.[4]
Under the order of Maj. Gen. Yuri Kellerne, Zydos joined Solari, Heaton and Arhun to infiltrate the EFF's military base near The Olt in an audacious operation to hijack two GMs for Zeon's technical examinations.[5] Disguised as EFF servicemen, Zydos and Heaton discovered a trailer-bounded GM. Zydos successfully activated and command the mobile suit in time to save Heaton, whose attempt to drive off the trailer alarmed the stationed EFF soldiers and shot at the trailer cabin. Zydos managed to destroy several idled GMs and M61A5 MBTs before his unit was sniped by Gundam EX and incapacitated. Solari came to Zydos' rescue and fought with the Gundam with beam saber, which allowed Heaton to carry the injured Zydos away from the destroyed GM. The GM-jack operation ended in failure as Solari's GM was overpowered by Gundam EX and LeSean rushed his Zaku to rescue Solari at the expense of his own life.
Zydos and the escaped infiltrators were able to locate the unconscious Solari at a nearly stream and they were picked by Maj. Ronet's convoy in time for evacuation to Odessa spaceport to board the remaining HLVs back to Space.[7] With Dr Kasuga's help, Solari was resuscitated and bought back to life. As Solari volunteered to join the Odessa defense force to repel EFF's bombardment to the spaceport, she gave her late husband Daltum's pocket watch to Zydos and entrusted him to pass it onto her son once he returned to Side 3. Zydos and co. bided farewell to the Red Wolf captain and Dr Kasuga as they boarded the last HLV and return to Space safely.[7]
