Odessa is a location introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam.

Overview

Odessa is the largest industrial region in Eastern Europe. It stretches along the Black Sea coast and is strategically important due to the presence of numerous mines producing special mineral resources[1].

History

One Year War

On March 1st of U.C. 0079, Zeon's Earth Attack Force launches its First Landing Operation, which was focused on Central Asia and Eastern Europe. By March 4th, the 1st Terrestrial Mobile Division had taken control of the Odessa region, with the resource extraction division of Zeon's Assault Mobile Force, led by then-Major M'Quve, subsequently taking authority over the captured area.[2][3]

Under the command of M'Quve, Odessa became a major resource extraction center for Zeon, a nation with little national strength. The resources mined in the area were sent into space, and M'Quve, who knew the amount of resources mined in the area, boldly stated that "Zeon can fight for another 10 years".

On November 7, U.C. 0079, the Earth Federation Forces launched Operation Odessa, which made the area one of the fiercest battlegrounds in the One Year War. On November 10th, the operation ended in victory for the Federation Forces, and Zeon troops defending Odessa retreated to space and other parts of the Earth. With the conclusion of this battle, the main battlefield of the One Year War shifted to space.

Wrath of Varuna

After the recapture, the mining base was placed under the control of the Federation Forces, but due to the effects of disarmament after the war, its defenses were not fully secured. Later, in U.C. 0081, Zeon remnants attacked the frontline base. The Phantom Sweep Corps, which had been deployed to reinforce the defenses, joined in the interception, but in the meantime, the Zeon special forces Invisible Knights seized the Efreet Nacht that was stationed at the base. Despite the valiant efforts of the Phantom Sweep Corps, the Invisible Knights succeeded in withdrawing, and the garrison suffered heavy damage.

Notes & Trivia

  • The location of Zeon's Mining Base better corresponds to the Ukrainian city of Dnipro (or the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast) than the real-world location of Odesa in Ukraine.
