— Vanessa
|
Vanessa is the guardian of the deity Samsara in the Temple of Cuatal and fought as a mini-boss. As of Season V, she also appeared in the game as a Quest NPC for the Xenia region.
Background
Nothing much is known about Vanessa other than being a loyal servant to the God of Circulation, Samsara. In the Temple of Destruction, it was revealed that Vanessa despises Hideous Borers.
Story
Originally in the dungeons' dialogues, Vanessa met the Grand Chase in the Temple of Cuatal. When she became a Quest NPC, however, Vanessa had already joined them in the Xenia Border.
Xenia Border
Upon landing in Xenia, Vanessa welcomed the Grand Chase and told them to find the gatekeepers to get their blessings and have access to the continent. When they received hostility from the Natives, Vanessa insisted on not killing them as they were only victims themselves despite the difficulty. As if contradicting herself, however, she ordered the group to treat them as a serious threat shortly afterward.
Vanessa was horrified as the Grand Chase started hurting the Natives. They told her that she commenced the attack, realizing the darkness had already affected her. As an apology, Vanessa pleaded to spare some potions so that she could heal the defeated Natives.
Temple of Cuatal
Originally Vanessa was to defend her master and aided by Amy. She eventually fell to corruption but was freed from its grasp and requested the Grand Chase to help Samsara.
Valstrath
As Samsara sensed a threat to the Grand Chase, Vanessa was quickly dispatched to help them. When Ashtaroth attacked, she started to argue that he should be guarding the Fortress of Ascension and not dealing with the "worms". She also said that they were invincible with their feelings for each other.
After Ashtaroth retreated, Amy became furious but Vanessa commented that Ashtaroth was only being cautious. They thanked her and asked if she would join the Grand Chase. However, she refused as it was forbidden for her to bypass another territory of god.
Later on, Vanessa realized she could enter a different territory and that something must have happened to the God of Flames for it to occur.
The Wyrm's Maw
As the ground trembled, Vanessa urged to hurry to the top of the mountains before the lava covered the entire area. Despite passing beyond the boundary, she felt hoarse and had to chug all the potions sheepishly.
Hearing his roar, Vanessa introduced herself to Starkiln to no avail even when the Grand Chase offered help.
Altar of Judgment
After acquiring two orbs, Vanessa led the Grand Chase in the Altar of Judgment to visit Goddess Yamini. When the group encountered Icefangs, she asked to spare the lives of these beasts. Still ashamed of consuming potions, Vanessa expressed regret and managed to gather some more for the group which they must only use when necessary.
Temple of Destruction
In search of Lord Perseo, Vanessa alerted the Grand Chase to stay focused and learn how nearby creatures react, or else they may not be able to face the God of Destruction. Meanwhile, the arid climate made her thirsty, and once again asked for some potions.
Forest of Life
As the group entered the Forest of Life, Vanessa warned them to avoid any harm as creatures within would drain them over time by poisoning or making them bleed out. Then she led the Grand Chase to a shortcut with stronger creatures to save time. They also encountered the mechanical monsters from the Temple of Destruction which she thought might have been left by someone related to Ashtaroth.
Due to the loud explosions, more monsters were gathering against the Grand Chase so Vanessa ordered to suppress them quickly. When Dark Storm and Furious Storm blocked their path, she suggested taking them out in tandem, or else they would use their magic to revive each other constantly.
Fortress of Ascension
Vanessa was caught off guard when the statues came to life. Along the way, the group encountered a young girl named Iblis and as they noticed the creature attached to her back, Vanessa felt that the temple maiden was being possessed by strong, malevolent energy and must be defeated.
Attacks

Players will face Vanessa in the fourth room before taking on the boss. She is similar to Ryan's Sentinel job. Her attacks are quick and can lock on to her enemies with a combo. She has a Soul Effect skill that is much larger than a Sentinel creates along with a seed she throws that turns into a plant somewhat like the Viken's Nature Tamer that deals repeatedly small damage and temporarily immobilizes the player. If the player gets caught in it, Vanessa can use her combo on the player, and therefore the player will not be capable of dodging the attack making it quite possibly lethal.
Once defeated, Vanessa transforms into her Wolf form like Ryan's Druid class with the ability to use the Sentinel's Spinning Phantom skill. The Wolf form commonly uses either Spinning Phantom up to 4 times and can also do a 4-hit combination with her claws. Both forms inherently have the Arrow Defense property in battle.
When fighting Ashtaroth, Vanessa will use the Soul Effect and make a temporary area that protects the players within the range of the attack. However, players can still get hurt if they wander too close to the edge of the shield.
Trivia
- Vanessa's combo resembles the Sentinel's Backspin Slash except that the skill is used in an opposite direction. Vanessa spins left while Ryan spins right at the beginning of the skill and Vanessa ends upward while Ryan's last hit is downward.
- While fighting Vanessa, there is an invisible platform in the upper left corner. One may reach the hidden platform if Vanessa uses the Soul Effect on the highest platform on the left side.
- A glitch may occur where Vanessa becomes invisible and freezes in place for the remainder of the battle.
- There was an armor set that made players look like Vanessa, even giving the players her ears and hair if wearing the helmet, called the Vanessa Armor Set. The armor would drop at the Xenia Border, Temple of Cuatal, and Valstrath from the bosses and The Wyrm's Maw from both Starkiln and the regular monsters.
- As of the Chaos season, the said armor set can no longer be acquired.
- In Season V, Vanessa would appear without a helmet past Valstrath in the mission board.
