Cockatrice

Cockatrice ff1

The Cockatrice (コカトリス, Kokatorisu? or コッカトリス, Kokkatorisu?), also known as the COCTRICE, Cocatris, Cocktric, Cockataur, Cokatrice, Cokatolis, Cocatoris, Cocatrice, or Stoney Roost, is a recurring creature in the Final Fantasy series that has appeared since the original Final Fantasy. Cockatrices are typically birds, though on occasion appeared as a variant of the Basilisk. Cockatrices often possess the ability to petrify the player characters, making them a potential danger.

Appearances

Final Fantasy

Cockatrice from FFI Pixel Remaster sprite

The Cockatrice, also known as the COCTRICE, appears as an enemy encountered in the Cavern of Earth, Mirage Tower, Sunken Shrine and Cavern of Ice. Its attacks are not strong, but they can inflict Petrify on the party and can potentially number up to eight Cockatrices at once. Once defeated, they may drop Gold Needles in later versions, which the player can use to cure the Petrify status. Players can flee from this monster if they find the petrify status to be annoying.

Final Fantasy II

Cockatrice from FFII Pixel Remaster sprite

The Cockatrice appears as an enemy encountered in the Cave of Mysidia and the Cyclone, as well as in the Mysidia area. Its attacks may cause Petrification. It is recommended to have the Esuna spell leveled up or to have a healthy supply of Gold Needles to counteract Petrify.

Final Fantasy III

The Cockatrice appears as an enemy fought in the Cave of Tides. Its appearance is a stark contrast to the avian-like design used in other titles, instead being based more on the Basilisk. A good way of defeating it is to open the fight with the Geomancer ability Whirlpool. Another easy way to weaken or lower the danger of this creature is to cast Blind, as the chances of getting petrified are great.

Final Fantasy IV

The Cockatrice, also known as the Cocktric or Cocatris, appears as an enemy encountered on Mt. Hobs and the area around Fabul. It is a weak enemy, but may inflict the Petrify status with its physical attacks.

The Cockatrice and its Helldiver and Roc Baby palette swaps have a low chance of dropping the Cockatrice Eidolon for use by Rydia. When summoned, Cockatrice is a 100% accurate instant death attack to a single foe that is not immune to the Petrify status. In the 3D versions, Cockatrice deals Earth damage to enemies that are immune to Stone.
