January 1998
- January 6: At Macworld Expo in San Francisco, Apple Computer interim CEO Steve Jobs announces Mac OS 8.1 with support for HFS Plus, QuickTime 3.0, and the return of Apple to profitability.

- January 19: Mac OS 8.1 is released with HFS Plus.

March 1998
- March 6: Disgruntled fans and developers gather at Apple Computer's 1 Infinite Loop campus to protest the discontinuation of the Newton platform.
- March 13: Bandai abandons its participation in the Pippin platform, Apple Computer's first attempt at entering the game console market.
- March 17: Apple Computer introduces 300 MHz versions of the "beige" Power Macintosh G3, and announces the first Apple Studio Display, featuring a 15-inch LCD.
April 1998
- April 3: The Power Macintosh G3 All-In-One "molar" is released to the educational market.
- April 20: Apple Computer interim CEO Steve Jobs meets with Lucent executives to discuss adapting their "Wireless LAN" technology into the first AirPort card.
May 1998
- May 4: Apple Computer announces its acquisition of Macromedia Final Cut, which would later be released as Final Cut Pro.
- May 6: Steve Jobs reveals the iMac.
- May 7: The first LCD Apple Studio Display is released by Apple Computer.
