- January 17: DayStar Digital is incorporated in the state of Georgia.
- January 18: Finder 1.0 is prepared for the System 0.97 boot disk to be included with the Macintosh 128K.
- January 22: The "1984" Apple Computer commercial announcing the Macintosh is aired during Super Bowl XVIII.
- January 24: Apple Computer chairman Steve Jobs (with bowtie) unveils the Macintosh at the company's annual shareholders meeting. The Macintosh 128K becomes the first Macintosh computer to be released, along with the System 1.0 operating system.
- January 30: Steve Jobs (with necktie) presents the Macintosh during the keynote event of the Boston Computer Society.
- February 9: The earliest known development version of MacBASIC (0.29) is built.
- March 15: MacBASIC 0.335 is released to universities.
- April 16: Early Macintosh developer Chicago Software, the predecessor to Macromedia, is founded in Chicago.
- April 23: The Apple IIc is introduced at the Apple II Forever conference, held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California.
- April 24: The Apple III computer is discontinued. Macintosh System 1.1 is compiled (though not yet released).
- May 5: System 1.1 is released.
- June 22-24: The first Apple Expo is held in Paris, France.
- September 10: The Macintosh 512K is released.
- October 25-29: Another Apple Expo is held in Cologne, West Germany.
