Patriot

Patriot is a prototype American SAM launcher that appears in the 2nd Korean War DLC of Wargame: Red Dragon.

History

The full-scale development of the anti-air system commenced in 1976 and was deployed in 1984. The Patriot was originally intended for just being anti-air system. By 1988, it was modified and upgraded to be used against ballistic missiles. It first saw deployment in the Gulf War, being assigned to shoot down Iraqi scuds firing at Saudi Arabia and Israel. However, on February 25th, 1991, one Iraqi scud hit a US base in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. After an investigation was conducted by the government, it was revealed that despite the Patriot detecting the scud, a software error had failed to shoot down the scud. It was then deployed with the US in the 2003 Invasion of Iraq being tasked with intercepting the Al-Samoud ballistic missiles with several being stationed in occupied Iraqi territory and neutral Kuwait. However, the missiles were involved in several friendly fire incidents, shotting down an RAF Tornado, an F-16 and F/A-18 Hornet. In Operation Protective Edge, an IDF Patriot shot down 2 unmanned aerial vehicles launched by the Hamas. During the Syrian Civil War, a Syrian unmanned aerial vehicle was shot down over the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. One month later, a Syrian Air Force Su-24 was shot down with similar circumstances. On July 17th, 2016, 2 Israeli Patriot missiles shot down a drone launched from Syria, but despite 2 missiles, it did not destroy the target. on April 2017, another Syrian UAV was shot down by another IDF Patriot battery fired two missiles. On September 2017, a Hezbollah intelligence drone was shot down trying to penetrate Israeli airspace via the Golan border. On June 2018, one Israeli Patriot missile fired at a drone coming from Syria. Despite the missile missing the target, the drone turned back to Syria. In July of that same year, another missile shot down a drone from Syria. Another engagement occurred on July 13th, an Israeli Patriot missile shot down a drone yet again coming from Syria. On July 24th, 2018, an Israeli Patriot missile shot down a Syrian Sukhoi Su-22 that had penetrated Israeli airspace. To this day, the Patriot is used by Israel, Netherlands, Germany, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait, Taiwan, Greece, Spain, South Korea, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Romania, Sweden, Ukraine and Egypt, as well as the US.

Patriot replaced Army's HAWKs serving in Corps and Army Level Air Defense Battalions.

Weapon

The MIM-104C Patriot is the longest-ranged SAM in the game, outranging even the best SEAD units in the game. Its massive range and HE damage is balanced out by the low number of available units (max 2) and its large logistics footprint. In a Support Deck, it is a suitable replacement for the Hawk PIP III, as its additional range and damage compensates for the lower number of units. Notably, the Patriot cannot target helicopters, so it will not protect against helicopter rushes or SEAD helicopters.
