Why does [INVINCIBLE] never pay for his crimes? Where is [INVINCIBLE] when people are trying to put their world back together?! (...) What do I want...? I want the truth! I want justice! Scott Duvall, better known as Powerplex, is a supporting antagonist in the Image Comic series Invincible and its animated adaptation of the same name.
Scott was a member of the GDA, helping develop technology to save the world. However, his mind snapped after his sister and niece were killed as causalities of Omni-Man's battle with his son Invincible. Despite showing evidence that Invincible had nothing to do directly with her death, Scott wrongly blamed him. Having stolen some of the equipment from his former workplace, Scott took the name Powerplex to avenge his sister and those killed in Chicago.
He is voiced by Aaron Paul, who also portrayed Jesse Pinkman in the Breaking Bad franchise, Francis Stillo in The Last House on the Left, Phil Stanton in Central Intelligence and voiced Cyrus in Tron Uprising.
Biography
Background
Not much is known of Scott Duval's past, but he was presumably born in the United States alongside his sister Jessica. He later married a woman named Becky and the two had a son together named Jack.
Invincible
After Jessica's death during Omni-Man's battle with Invincible, Scott decides to enact revenge against the latter. He steals a bio-thermal discs from the Pentagon and creates a power suit that can stole the kinetic energy, and adopts the name "Powerplex". Wanting the heroes' attention, Duval enacts a crime but instead attracts the attention of other superheroes. Desparate to face Invincible, he has his family pose as hostages to lure him out. Rejecting Invincible's apology, Powerplex attacks him until he accidentally incinerates Becky and Jack by unleashing his kinetic energy. Enraged and heartbroken, Duvall attacks Invincible until the latter hugs him, forcing him to waste all of his energy. He is then imprisoned at the Stronghold Penitentiary, and promises that he will get out to kill Invincible.
During the Invincible War storyline, Scott helps for the cleanup until he sees Invincible and attacks him, but is stopped by Badrock and imprisoned at the Pentagon. However, Cecil Stedman has Powerplex join the Actioneers to prove himself worthy of redemption. Later on, he notices Invincible flying and attacks him, but is once again imprisoned after breaking down. At some point, he was released and tasked with helping fight against the Flaxan invasion.
TV Series
Early Life
In the animated series, it is heavily implied that Scott was born with the ability to control electricity to a lesser degree, essentially as just a party trick. At some point in time, Scott and his older sister Jessica were left orphaned, forcing Jessica to take care of herself, as well as to raise her own brother. This led to Scott being extremely attached to her, as he would've most likely died if it wasn't for her.
Years later, in the battle between Omni-Man and Invincible, Scott was visiting Jessica and his newly-born niece Gretchen in Chicago. Moments before Omni-Man dragged the battle to Chicago, Scott had went to buy coffee for the two as they went to their apartment, and bared witness to the destruction of their apartment complex. Scott watched in horror as Invincible tried to save Jessica, but could only pull out her dismembered arm.
Scott didn't just hold Omni-Man responsible for the massacre, but also his son Invincible, believing that, somehow, he was aware of what he was doing and willingly massacred thousands.
Exacting his revenge
Having become a GDA scientist, Scott began to use some experimental tech on himself in the form of energy discs. These discs would improve his natural ability to turn the kinetic energy he was exposed to into electric charges to extraordinary degrees. His wife, Becky supported his decision, and helped install the tech onto her husband's body. Attacking downtown Chicago, Powerplex demanded Invincible. Instead, the Guardian of the Globe Shapesmith showed up instead, and Powerplex quickly defeated him. Seeing he was on the news, Scott began to worry if the GDA would get him first. Becky would comfort him, renewing his resolve.
Attacking again during the Chicago memorial event, Powerplex was attacked by Atom Eve, who was able to hold Powerplex off until the rest of the Guardians of the Globe arrived to restrain him. Panicking and becoming more unhinged, Powerplex escaped where he enlisted his wife's help in staging a kidnapping to finally bring out Invincible. Tying up Becky and their infant son Jack, Powerplex turn to see the hero in question. The two fight briefly with Powerplex releasing a massive discharge of electricity to severely hurt Invincible. This had the unintended consequence of killing both Jack and Becky too. With renewed grief and his sanity now nonexistent, Powerplex wildly attacked again until Invincible knocked him out.
Scott awoke restrained in prison, where GDA agent Donald Ferguson revealed that the discs couldn't be removed without killing Scott. Invincible then tried in vain to sympathize with Scott, who still foolishly blamed the hero for everything.
Invincible War
When Angstrom Levy brought several villainous versions of Invincible to their world, they began to attack various parts of the planet. One with a mohawk attacked the prison, freeing Powerplex and drawing the Prime Invincible's attention. Scott happily attacked both Invincibles in revenge. Realizing they needed help, Cecil freed Powerplex to help defeat Mark's doppelgangers. When Levy was defeated, Scott was seen helping people before seeing Invincible again. Then he attempted to attack Invincible only to be restrained by both Mark and Oliver.
