Shapesmith is a supporting character in the Image Comics series Invincible and its animated adaptation.
He is a Martian who came to Earth after impersonating an astronaut, and joined the Guardians of the Globe.
He is voiced by Ben Schwartz, who also voices Sonic the Hedgehog in the Sonic Cinematic Universe, Skidmark from Turbo, Dewey Duck from the 2017 reboot of DuckTales, Randy Cunningham from 9th Grade Ninja, Leonardo from Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Banarnar from The LEGO Movie 2: The 2nd Part, and Mark from DC League of Super-Pets
Biography
Shapesmith was born on the planet Mars but grew disatisfied with life there, soon enough when Invincible and a group of astronauts came into conflict with the Martians, Shapesmith knocked out one of said astronauts and took his place on the mission back to Earth. Once there, being given a leave of absence by NASA and living in Rus Livington's appartment, he became inspired as he saw the heroics from the Guardians of the Globe on TV, and chose to become a hero himself, fabricating a false origin story to avoid telling how he really came to be on Earth.
During yet another Flaxan Invasion, Shapesmith intervened to help and was later accepted as a member of the New Guardians of the Globe, being given a race car bed by Cecil.
When ship filled with Sequids arrived, Shapesmith revealed himself as a Martian (in the series, everybody but Black Samson already knew). He then tells them that while Invincible was helping the astronauts escape Mars, he knocked out one of them, Rus Livingston, impersonated him, and allowed Rus to become possessed by the Sequids, and their new host. And now he and Sequids had taken a Martian ship, and were on their way to Earth.
So, along with Atom Eve, The Immortal, Monster Girl, Black Samson, Bulletproof, Robot, and Invincible, he went on board the ship, and stopped the Sequid invasion.
Trivia
- Shapesmith is based on Plastic Man.
- During the Invincible War, while the Guardians of the Globe fight an alternate Mark Grayson, he mentions the absence of Shapesmith when he killed the Guardians in his world, suggesting Shapesmith is an anomaly and didn't join the Guardians on other worlds.
- Among all the main heroes that were killed by Robot during his takeover of Earth, Shapesmith is the only one to not get a funeral (or at least one shown). This is likely due to his nature as a martian and not having any real name or ties to Earth, also given that his body was almost completely destroyed by Rex.
